I came to Saumur to see this museum and it didn't disappoint. I found the displays very informative. There is a large parking area close by to it as well. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

A lovely low key museum with the history of the development of the cavalry. A good display of both uniforms and weapons. The information panels are in English and French and give plenty of good information. The temporary exhibition of the role of women in the military was very interesting. We spent just over an hour and thought at €17 for the family it was good value.

The museum housed in the old stables was closed (Friday) our first time to Saumur so we decided to come back to see this museum. We were not disappointed. We used our Petit Train receipt that gave us a discount so entry was 8 euro. This is a historic self guided tour tracing the history of the French cavalry from 1445 to the tanks of present day. There are lots of great artifacts – swords, helmets, uniforms to help you get the idea of how things changed. Beautiful paintings and sculptures too with some English translation – would have liked more. This was really interesting even to a non history buff like myself. One thing I would have liked would have been more specific information about the selection & training of the horses and their daily rituals while working but even without this, it is worth a visit.

Didn't know about this till we got to Saumur. Very nice museum in the old stables. It is a very short walk from the tourist center. The history of French cavalry is well displayed. The signage is in French but go anyway as the displays are terrific. You won't be disappointed.
