“Superb visit for tank-mad young and old alike.”
Reviewed 14 August 2011

What can I say, from the moment my son heard the words 200 tanks in one place, this was eagerly anticipated, and it does not disappoint [well from his perspective anyway], to all those parents who have spent hours tramping around the RAF museum in Hendon etc you will know exactly what sort of trip this is. He was in heaven from the moment we pulled up to the gate [there are two large tanks outside so you don't miss it].
It is cheaper than other attractions [€7 for an adult, he went free as under 7] and he spent 6 hours here happily investigating and oohing and aahhing at things.
Points I wish I had known: It has no restaurant, no cafe, not even a tea bar! By hour three I was so desperate for a proper coffee I nearly cried. We finally found some vending machines right by the exit doors, but you only discover these when you finish.
Also, and it might just be my kid attracts dirt, but by the end of the visit he was filthy. He wanted to sit and draw some of the tanks and as there was no seating near the tanks plonked himself on the floor happily, also there are several tanks in the children's area specifically for them to climb around in and explore, but be under no illusions, it has an equivalent grubbiness rating to letting them explore a garage!

Overall a fabulous [and cheap] way to spend a day if you are tank-mad.

“Tanks a Million”
Reviewed 6 August 2004

The Tank Museum in Saumur is a must for any armour enthusiast.

Located near the town centre it's well signposted from the visitor information centre. Entry charge was very reasonable.

The Museum claims to have the worlds largest collection with some 200 exhibits ranging from the 1st World war to contemporary Israeli battletanks.

Quite a few French tanks as you'd expect but also wonderful examples of T34/76 & 85, King Tiger, SU 100, Sturmgeschutz III etc etc. If you never grew up this is the place for you!

Historical interpretation was brief but includes English.

A modest cafe with vending machine and a shop selling military related items.

My son and I loved it and for me it was a highlight of a two week tour of France. My wife and daughter hated it and camped out in the cafe. Women!!
