Stands well in the old town high over the surrounding area and can be seen for miles. Well worth the hike up from the new town below. Amazing presence and interior. Entrance surrounded by magnificent sculptures. Worth spending time here before visiting the rest of the town.

Visible from miles around, as it is the highest point in the area. So, magnificent views. Also, can be kinda strenuous to get up those steps to the old town! We made the mistake of not driving far enough up the hill, and the steps LOOKED nice and gradual. But it's hard work. There is apparently a cable car, but we couldn't find it.
The cathedral did not disappoint; nice gargoyles! And interesting old buildings all around. Worth a visit.

I was really surprised when I turned the corner and there it was. The flying buttresses are massive and unique. If you're in Senlis, do not miss this architectural beauty.

There are so many old cathedrals in France you almost start to think that you don't need to see another. But they are not all the same and the Notre Dame Senlis is no exception. It is so good and a mix of architectural styles set in a medieval village that is still so evident today. Magnificent statues and ornaments abound, but this cathedral also has a friendly feel, a feel that just makes you want to sit and reflect. They don't all achieve that and I believe that that is the reason that there is standing room only every Sunday.

Well worth the look as is a look around the village itself.

We were camping nearby at a place called Guignicourt and decided to take the train into Laon. Easy fast journey on the ever excellent SNCF.
On arrival at Laon followed the signs to "Cite Medeival". A long steep climb which could have been avoided had we found the funicular railway (more of this later).
The old city is very attractive and the Cathedral is a gem.
There are lots of small restaurants including the usual touristy places right outside the Cathedral though they are all reasonably priced.
The funicular track runs from just outside the main railway station. Exit the station and cross a paved area and bear to the left. The "poma" station is tucked round the corner and for a couple of Euros return you can save yourself a lot of effort. It takes about 5 mins and the terminus is right in the middle of the old city behind the Marie.
