English tour of both Hennesey and Otard, my group found the Otard tour to be superior. To be able to see the residence of Francois I along with a knowledgable history of the production of cognac was a bonus. Our guide was delightful. Better cognacs were offered at a lesser tour price.

Excellent castle and history.

I was a little disappointed because there was a group of three people who decided to bring their toddler on the tour.... Bad idea, this probably ruined my experience. When Hugo was talking and explaining the history, the attention always shifted to this little kid, every 30 seconds.. WHY DO YOU BRING YOUR LITTLE KID ON A COGNAC TOUR?

Hugo could have been a little friendlier. When I tried engaging in conversation or asking perfectly logical questions, he looked at me like I was crazy. C'mon man, don't be like every other French person who is on the "Hate America bandwagon".

The two small tastes of cognac at the end were much deserved..

Two recommendations to the owners: perhaps hire someone a little "warmer" and don't let children on the tour....

First, let me say this castle is quite the place to visit. It's where King Francis I was born and was visited by Richard the Lionhart too! Now, they Baron Otard, very high end cognac, is made. It was a perfect visit...impressive and delicious too! We loved it!

The tourist office gave us some misinformation about tours for a Sunday but fortunately for us the Trafalgar tour group allowed us to tag along on their tour. This tour was in English and the Otard guide was very conscientious but I think she would have been more comfortable in French or German. Otard has the distinction of the chateau and it's history as well as it's later involvement in the production and storage of cognac. There was perhaps one of the largest and most well carved of the salamander insignias that I have seen in any of the French chateaux.
the explanation of the production of cognac was informative and well presented. The olefactory demonstrations and experiences were particularly helpful. We also appreciated the opportunity to sample two levels/ages of cognac. This obviously resulted in our purchase of some XO, once we knew we really enjoyed the sample.
The one recommendation I would make to both Otard and to those who visit, is to inform those who are sampling the cognac to warm their sample with their hands to enhance the flavour. On the day we were there the samples were quite cold and needed a little warming. Too many people put their samples down quickly declaring them to be too sharp, too strong. That is not completely due to not liking the product but to inexperience.

We have visited many of the distilleries in Cognac and had, so far, had pleasant experiences there. We had seen a number of good write-ups of Otard and our guests asked us to take them to one we hadn't been to before, so we chose it. What a disappointment. Compared with several of the others, it was unimpressive. As our guests were English with no French language we took the English tour, headlined for a 2.30 start but actually started at 2.00pm.
The guide's English was exceptionally poor and very unclear and she had very limited knowledge of the subject, the family and brand, and the chateau itself, and she was obviously trying hard to remember the script, albeit with some difficulty here and there, and was very stiff, formal and not at all friendly. We had to listen very had to the guide and only understood the words of about half of what she was saying, though we know the subject quite well.
The chateau building and history was the highlight of the tour - not what we had come for but an interesting addition which happened to save the experience from being an embarrassing flop for our guests. Even there there was scant information, such as names on busts (Richard the Lionheart, Voltaire etc. being mentioned but not why they were there or what their connection to the place was. One the distillery tour itself, which we found cursory, the demonstrations of aromas in the ageing cognac was very badly done with artificial scents; the whole place had an air of nothing much actually happening. At the end of the tour, the tasting was a bad experience, with very rough stuff served. No-one on our tour bought anything, which is the first time we have experienced this. Complete waste of time, considering there are so many other good tours with more personable guides and better experiences laid on.
