“Faulty Towers Rerun”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2014

Visted with my family last week. We were eating early and the restaurant had but two or three tables occupied. But we were shown to a table overlooking the toilet and were then given with bad grace a table beside the canal. The next incident was when after receiving our first course we noticed that our host had ommited to mention the specials on the board beside the kitchen. The next little incident was that one dish of small prawns required peeling into a waste dish but no finger bowl was provided. When we had used up all of the three paper type napkins provide to clean the hands of the person having the prawns these were not replaced. Instead the waiter who was the only person over 18 present then stoped his junior from giving us replacements but supplied us with paper tissues! Next while demonstrating the specials to the couple who had arrived at the next table this gentleman proceeded to bump into my daughter nearly knocking her over. The apology was mimimal.

Finally when the bill arrived it said "Servis Compris" When I queried since I had little intention of paying for such poor service I was told "Servis Non Compris" Normally I would have raised this there and then but since this individual was the only adult in sight and French is not my strongpoint we left. The food was Ok by the way but not worth the bad manners.

“Good meal, good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 September 2013

At the urging of foodie friends we dined at L'Ecluse. Great setting on the canal, very good and friendly service, though admittedly we were on the early side and the restaurant wasn't crowded. A pleasant, if somewhat limited, list if wines; we had a very nice muscadet that went well with my smoked salmon plate (about the best smoked salmon ever) and my husband's goat cheese salad, and then my mussels and frites and his planked codfish. The mussels were very good, the frites a bit on the soft side but tasted just fine. The codfish was delicious. My husband had an excellent Irish coffee for dessert. We'd go back.

“Great location on a small river 200 yards out of town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2013 via mobile

In a town with many restaurants and plenty mediocrity l'Ecluse gives honest quality seafood for a very good price. When ordering water how often do you get asked whether you would like tap water ( free of charge) or bottled water? Fruit de mer was great but also mussels and fish platter were much appreciated.

“Perfect for children”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2013

Away from the main tourist drag restaurants have to try that little bit harder and l'Ecluse tries hard without ever over-doing it. Surprisingly secluded, the specialities are (of course) wonderfully fresh seafood. This is our regular haunt when making our annual stop-over in La Rochelle.

The ambience is relaxed and friendly and our children have been made to feel most welcome from infancy. There are fancier places and cheaper places, but - for my money this mid-range restaurant is hard to beat in terms of value for money. Highly recommended.

“Beautiful setting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2013

We found this by accident after a walk to the park and beach at the east of La Rochelle. It was lunchtime and all we wanted was a crepe, which was delicious. They specialise in seafood and shellfish and the restaurant chairs are mostly outside under canopies. The service was good and the price reasonable. Worth a visit for people who like mussels.
