“Great location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2014

This hotel has little character and charm but it's location and price mean we would stay there again. Very cheap, great free car park, free wifi and reasonably priced breakfast. But the best part about staying here is that it is possible to walk to both the harbour - with all it's lovely seafood restaurants, and the beach. Had a lovely stay here. Though the reception staff can be a little frosty, so make sure you remember to book breakfast the night before!

Room Tip: Has a lift, which means we could stay on any floor even with the buggy.

From the moment I arrived this hotel was not very good. I arrived on a Sunday afternoon to find that the doors were closed and you had to check in via a machine. This machine did not recognize my booking number, not my name and my only option was to book another room. Luckily I had not pre-paid the first booking, so it financially it didn't impact me. However it was highly inconvenient.
When I finally got to my room it was unmade. and just as I sat down the maid walked in looking utterly confused. I vacated the room while she was making up the room. When I could finally put my feet up in the room, it was not very clean, there were holes in the walls and it smelled of cheap air freshener.
On the plus side: it is cheap, it has ample onsite parking, the bed and shower were ok. Depending on what you are looking for the hotel is in a newer part of town which was desolate the Sunday I was there. If you like to be more in the middle of things book a place in the old centre, a mile or so up the road.
Despite the bad start I had an ok night, but I wouldn't stay here again if I can help it. Although convenient, if the electronic check in does not work you are left stranded with no human able to help you.

We stayed in Hôtel Altica La Rochelle for one night in May 2014.

Pros: Much cheaper than in the city centre but still within a walking distance to everywhere. Clean. Strong wi-fi.

Cons: Very small bathroom. Shower curtains. Uncomfortable bed. Also, we had to wait outside until someone came at 5 pm because their check-in machine wasn't working. Pricey breakfast. Staff was rude and looked bored. Only French spoken.

Overall: I wouldn't recommend it and probably won't stay in any Altica Hotel again.

I enjoyed the decoration of our room, and the location. The staff was very polite, and the coffe machine in the entrance hall functioned. However, you will need your memory for the code of the door. And try to get a room on the side of the hotel which is NOT facing the construction... (except if you are like me, and enjoy watching constructions.)

We booked this because of its great value for money (50 euro a night for a triple room for three adults) and its location and found it exactly what we wanted. Very clean and well equipped, efficient shower, comfortable beds, good base for walking to the harbour at La Rochelle, close to good quality eating places for breakfast (and presumably lunch and dinner as the restaurants locally looked good) although we walked into the main town to eat. Free, secure parking and friendly and helpful staff. Vending machines for snacks and drinks in the foyer. Breakfast if required - you don't need to book in advance. A good base for exploring. The downsides - no air conditioning so the nights were hot, no nice views, reception closed 11.30am to 5pm although you could ring to obtain a code to get in (if you had read the small print and knew about this beforehand!)

Stayed two nights at the Altica. Exactly as described, a budget hotel but was clean and everything was good. If you want to check in before 5pm you need to phone the hotel before 11.30am on the day of your booking for the door code. You can then get in your room after 2pm and pay when reception opens at 5pm.

I was impressed by the cleanliness of the hotel room and the en suite was good quality too. I was also very happy that the bed was a double rather than a twin. This hotel is also in an excellent location, very close to the town centre which is very vibrant and pretty.
The only let downs were that the room was quite small, the view was of the car park and there was no air conditioning which made the whole hotel very hot. I wouldn't recommend this hotel for a long stay or during the summer.
