Having decided, almost on a whim, to try La Rochelle for a weekend break (mainly on the basis that we could fly there cheaply with Ryanair from our home town of Cork, Ireland) we went looking for a convenient hotel. We generally try to avoid standard modern hotels as we prefer more authentic and even quirky hotels where possible. My wife was not convinced that a Best Western was our kind of hotel although the excellent reviews on Trip Advisor were reassuring. In the event the choice turned out to be a good one as Hotel Champlain is very authentic hotel of great character which has retained loads of its original quite opulent features. It is very conveniently located a short distance from the main shopping thoroughfare and near to the bustling market clearly frequented by locals even more than tourists. The harbour area, which would be the main tourist drag, is a few more minutes (about 10) away. La Rochelle abounds with restaurants and a great variety of shops. We stayed in one of the premium rooms which were in the original part of the building - there are more rooms in a newer extension. The room -overlooking the gorgeous garden - was bright and airy, furnished with good quality old style (possibly antique) furniture and with a very large and very comfortable bed. There was a more modern and very well appointed bathroom en suite. There was a good selection of breads and fruits and other items for breakfast which we were fortunate to be able to consume on the garden terrace. This would only be possible if you are blessed with the warm sunshine we had on the second morning of our stay. The breakfast was little pricey at €12 perhaps but difficult to fault otherwise. Coffee from a very fancy machine was of better quality than we managed to get out and about in La Rochelle. The staff, though, are what really make this hotel stand out. All the staff we encountered at the reception, in the dining room, cleaning the rooms etc were all lovely. Everyone had a welcoming word even if they did not all have fluent English and their tolerance of our indifferent and limited French was different from our previous experience of tourism in France. All in all our expectations were exceeded all around and we would be very happy to stay again in Hotel Champlain if the opportunity arose.

Room Tip: I'd definitely go for a premium room again and one facing the garden (I'm not sure if they a...

We stayed for one night in June and we're sorry that we couldn't have stayed longer. It is very convenient to the town centre and the staff were most friendly and helpful. We had a fabulour room and the bed was the most comfortable of our three week vacation in France. It's a real little gem in the town.

We stayed for 7 nights from 11th June. The hotel is well situated in a quiet street near Place de Verdun & 10 minutes walk from the harbour. We had a lovely room, large & airy ,overlooking the beautiful walled garden. It was comfortable & spotlessly clean, as was the bathroom. The air conditioning is very efficient - the best we have experienced in a hotel. The reception staff were extremely fiendly & helpful & we will definitely be returning. La Rochelle is a very interesting & clean town & the people are very friendly & welcoming. The airport bus service is only 1.30 euros into Place de Verdun & takes about 15 minutes - excellent.

Room Tip: the rooms overlooking the garden are fantastic

We were three couples visiting La Rochelle for only one night, unfortunately! The hotel is delightful, the rooms are large with high ceilings, very comfortable beds, tasteful decor and smart bathrooms which are fitted out to a very high standard. The hotel itself is elegant and the garden is beautiful and tranquil, full of birdsong whilst we were there, breakfast in the garden is a memorable way to start the day. Leave your car in the car park next door, the city is easy to walk around, and the harbour is just a few minutes walk away. A very good restaurant is just a few doors away.

Room Tip: Our room overlooked the garden, but as the street is not noisy, a room of the front should be quiet...

We had an excellent stay in this hotel ,staff very helpful and friendly, our room was clean and well decorated and opened out on to a patio with lovely gardens. We asked at reception for a kettle and cups etc and this was readily supplied. Did not take the breakfast.
The location is excellent 10 min stroll to harbour passing the cathedral on the way which is being refurbed so you might not notice it as the cathedral we walked past it twice without realising but we went in it is beautiful inside and well worth a look. we visited the tourist office and obtained a book (20cents) with a detailed walk of either 3 or 1.5 hours. We ate on the port a bit, more expensive but worth the view of the habour and hussle & bussle. Came from airport by Taxi 17eu went back by bus 1.30 euros each, bus stop across the sq from hotel No7 it was easy

Room Tip: Ground floor room 54 opens onto patio and garden very quiet has a room safe but safe is free standin...

We had a lovely big room with large bathroom overlooking the pretty garden in this charming hotel. The bed was large and comfortable and there was even a kettle with tea and coffee in the room. Breakfast was good (12 euros) and the staff were friendly and helpful. La Rochelle is a beautiful town with great shops and interesting buildings.

My daughter and I stayed at the hotel again this year, w.c. 6th May. We had the Prestige Room (No. 18), as before. On our arrival, I was shocked to see the facade crying out for a lick of paint which, in my opinion, gave a totally wrong impression of the establishment. Had I been a teen-age guy on a rugby tour, I guess I would have felt that it would do as a 'kip for the night'! However, inside the door everything was still good, the receptionist was efficient and pleasant and the general ambience was as expected.

Since our last visit the extra charge for breakfast had increased by one Euro (to €12). This is still acceptable if you like a hearty breakfast, and there is full and plenty and a wide variety available. If, however, you are the glass of orange and the gulp of coffee type, then go elsewhere, The fact that you are being served in nice surroundings and have not to go outdoors would hardly compensate. Back to the hearty breakfast: you may make your own toast and boil your own eggs if you wish; you may request some cooked egg-breakfast from the kitchen which we did. We would not order the scrambled egg or the omelette again as they seemed a bit leathery - "microwave-y" my daughter suggested. We tried the unaccompanied and ungarnished 'eggs on a plate' and these were fresh and absolutely delicious. The coffee was good, the tea was not (though the bags were nicely wrapped and entitled "Gilbert - English breakfast").

The beds were comfortable (twin as requestred) - the furniture, same as before, antique and heavy, some carved and inlaid and nice. Yes, I know, that the drawers stick and won't run smoothly and the wardrobe doors creak on the hinges but that's vintage for you, and what some of us actually like. What I did not like was the fact that the mantle clock had NO HANDS. Not a beautifully ornate old French clock, but nice enough nonetheless - but for me, without the hands, it was that little bit too much down at heel and out at elbow. Of course I would not expect such an antique to be in WORKING order, but...but...but...that blank-faced poor old dear...! Even lend a hand, or two!!

Apart altogether from the hotel, it was not our most successful La Rochelle visit. The weather was overcast and dull, not cold at all, but the flashes of sunlight were few and far between.During our visit, there were two public holidays on consecutive days - 8th and 9th - though quite a few shops were open. Our time there coincided with Les Dixie-Folies - Festival de Jazz Traditionnel. We took in a lovely Dinner/Jazz Concert on the 9th. It was in a little hidey-hole of a place (Restaurant Chez Rene) unknown to the hotel receptionist, but the taxi driver collected us at the hotel and got us there in double-quick time.

The Tourist Office was very busy and our hotel was completely booked out, so La Rochelle is as popular as ever. I think that it deserves its popularity as it is a joy to visit....my thanks!
