“Charming”

I really enjoyed my time here.

The staff were fabulous, the room quaint and the location of the hotel ideal for exploring La Rochelle.

It felt like you were welcomed into a warm family home. My room was small but comfortable and provided me with all necessities.

The room was clean, the bathroom was small, but functional and the bed was deliciously comfortable.

The hotel was quiet, I did not hear any other guests when in my room.

It was easy to find from the train station, and is in an excellent place for exploring this wonderful town.

If you like staying at bland chain hotels, you definitely won’t even consider booking into the Hotel Francois 1er in La Rochelle. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a hotel that’s a tad out of the ordinary, close to shops, restaurants, and the port and is priced reasonably, then this just might be a good place for you.
Like the vast majority of hotels, the Francois 1er has its flaws. The nature of running a hotel in a very old building is that there will always be some trade-offs. In this case, the character of the building forces some odd room layouts with cramped bathrooms; the lack of lifts will not please those who are allocated rooms on upper floors; and finding the hotel means that you have to navigate through a maze of narrow one-way streets before claiming a space in the hotel parking (EUR7/night - definitely not "charges might apply" as per booking, com). I can live with all these flaws if the beds were comfortable (not so good), the shower is clean and powerful (absolutely!) and the breakfast adequate. In addition, the free Wi-Fi access is easily accessible and fast – certainly fast enough to stream TV programs to bedrooms or conduct a video call with Skype, something that is not always possible in hotels.
Regretfully, the breakfast room is dark, cramped, and seemed not so clean on the day I used it. The breakfast wasn’t up to much either, but then again, for EUR7.50 you might be satisfied with a couple of croissants and a cup of warmish coffee. Neither the croissants nor the coffee were up to standard and I didn’t care to taste the other food that was laid out, perhaps because the room was so unwelcoming.
On the plus side, the hotel is ideally located for a short stroll to the restaurants that surround La Rochelle’s port and there is lots of shopping in the immediate vicinity. And it’s not every day that you can stay in a building that has hosted at least one French king and many other nobles in the past.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first or second floor if you don't like stairs. Parking is limited so be s...

I wanted a clean, not too expensive room in central La Rochelle and that's exactly what I got. This is a good two-star hotel: nothing fancy, but decent value in a quiet location and very helpful staff. They let me park my car in their courtyard for free!

Booked one night stay for our wedding anniversary in January. The hotel is very reasonably priced considering its situated in the centre of La Rochelle, not noisy,( though what it would be like in summer months is perhaps another story.) Parking was free and right next door (winter only). Hotel room was small but more than adequate and very clean, all you need. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Breakfast was good value at 7 euros each for cereals, cold meats, cheese, yoghurts, croissants, bread and juice, tea/coffee!! Breakfast room small, fine in winter months, but again could be different in the summer. All in all, very good value and would go back, without hesitation.

Room Tip: We stayed at the top, room 221, no noise at all!

We stayed 2 nights in Francois 1er and couldn´t have been more happy about our stay.

We were in the very heart of the old town of La Rochelle, but on a very quiet street with private (!) parking on an own fenced yard, which seemed almost impossible to find with other hotels in La Rochelle.

The room nr.16 we stayed in was on the ground level, very spacious, bathroom was with under floor heating (!), and everything felt 100% clean. A plus for the historic decor of the room :)

The only minuses are poor sound proofing (you can hear the doors slamming in the morning, VERY, very well), and a rather limited breakfast.

But the staff were very friendly (the overall ambience between the staff and the guests in the hotel was very good), most of the staff spoke English, and free wi-fi was available throughout the hotel. So for the €65/night we paid I´m confident we couldn´t have got better value anywhere in La Rochelle!

Room Tip: Nr. 16 we stayed in was great value (spacious & clean). The room being on the ground level, the...

This hotel is perfectly situated, in a quiet street, in the city centre, it also has the advantage of limited, (bookable) parking, an option to consider as parking in La Rochelle, is a nightmare.
We had a three night stay, room 19 on the ground floor, overlooking the car park, but nonetheless, quiet. We were pleasantly received by the staff, and nothing was to much trouble for them, particularly helpfull in restaurant choices.
The room was comfortable enough, twin beds, desk, chairs etc, with a decent bathroom, but as in the case of all old buildings, repairs and maintaince is always reguired, and this hotel needed some attention.
The breakfast area is on the small size, and the choice is very poor, and of all the hotels we have used on this trip, (5) this offered the least choice.
However, La Rochelle is definately worth visiting, and if, like us, are on the move, this hotel, because of its parking facility, will serve the need.
It is a good value hotel
