“Charming Bed and Breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2014

We had a wonderful experience staying at La Maison d'Aix. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by Karin, who oriented us to the Maison d'Aix and helped bring the luggage up to our room. She then graciously jumped into the car to guide me to the parking garage, which was very close by. Having previously helped to arrange dinner reservations, she had a map ready for us that clearly marked where the restaurants were located. The following morning, we were treated to an outstanding breakfast that included fresh croissants, fruit, juice, and coffee. Karin was off duty for the latter part of our stay, but Victor took over. Victor was incredibly friendly, enthusiastic, and accommodating. It was a lot of fun chatting with him, and his fruit salad was awesome!

The location on quiet side street was great. A short walk to the main street, Cours Mirabeau, and just beyond that the wonderfully quaint and picturesque old city that was filled with interesting shops, restaurants, fountains, and plazas. We discovered a beautiful and peaceful garden at the Pavillon de Vendome, and had a great lunch outdoors at L'Archeveche Cafe near the cathedral and tapistry museum. Although the views were nice, the Atelier Cezanne was a disappoinment and the hike up the hill past a large construction project was probably not worth it. (Another guest enjoyed the Cezanne Walking Tour, which interestingly did not include the trip up to the Atelier.

One of the highlights of our stay was a trip down to Cassis - a quaint old port village that was about a 40 minute drive from La Maison. Highly recommend the 90 minute boat ride that took us to multiple calanques, which are breathtakingly scenic coves amongst the very high rocky cliffs. They run shorter boat rides that show fewer of the calanques, but the 90 minutes flew by and we were really glad that we decided on the longer option. One tip: to get good seats on the boat, make sure you get on board well before the scheduled departure time.

We loved our stay and would definitely return to La Maison d'Aix. Be aware that there is no elevator, and if you go, make sure that you have them reserve a parking spot for you in the garage. There is some street parking, but it is quite limited and more expensive than the parking garage deal.

Victor the host is wonderful! Rooms quiet, clean and breakfast he made was awesome! Tough to park, but worth the walk for location and the lovely experience of this small place. Ask for top room if you don't stairs, has a patio and so quiet.

Room Tip: stay in the top room - quieter and has patio

Great location. Hosts Karin and Victor were superb! Only 4rooms on a quiet street. Breakfast was a fresh treat. Walk to all restaurants in central area. Trip advisor should not demand a 100 character review. Some folks are concise!

La Maison d'Aix is one of those places that you visit with great expectations and in most cases these are met.
The location is great for accessing the historical centre and the hotel was easy to find.
The contemporary decor has been installed with a great deal of thought and works very well.
Victor, the Manager greeted us upon arrival and parked the car for us and insisted on lugging our significant baggage to our room which was six flights up the stairs. We had the suite. (The stairs are a factor if you do not have assistance).
Breakfast was adequate with out being great and when the cost is considered, could have been better.
The hotel was unattended during the night although an emergency phone number was left with us. Wanting to watch the World Cup on TV when there are no instructions in how to combine the three remotes is hardly an emergency but our call was not returned and was only acknowledged the next morning.
I have little to compare with in this town but do have some experience in the region and the value for money aspect is the main thing preventing me from giving this five thumbs up. At 550 Euro per night, We expected more.
Would only recommend if the expectations of what was on offer for the tariff had been made clear.

La Maison d'Aix is wonderfully furnished, ideally located and is staffed by by the most caring and accommodating professionals who are multilingual including excellent English skills. We were made to feel very welcome. The hotel is located within Aix's historic district in a mansion dating back to 1789 the interior of which has been completely updated in a clean, contemporary state-of-the-art way. The hotel has only four large rooms plus public rooms consisting of a spacious lounge-library, a sitting room, an appealing breakfast room (serving great breakfasts too), honor bar and kitchen which is open and used by the staff to prepare breakfast, answer guest questions, etc..

The location is but a 3-5 minute stroll to the famous Cours Mirabeau which offers many sidewalk cafes, close access to great restaurants of many cuisines and lots of shops.

We could not think of a better place to stay in Aix en Provence or a better place to return to after a day of exploring nearby medieval villages. Try to see the village of Uzes which is the most exquisitely preserved and beautiful village ever.

Room Tip: All the rooms seemed large and as well done as the others.

If you are in Aix-en-Provence, stay here. Located just a minute's walk from the Cours Mirabeau, La Maison d'Aix is perfectly situated to explore this captivating town. With just four rooms, it's like going back to the days when guests stayed in town houses, met each other over breakfast, and were hosted efficiently yet discreetly.

Our room had all the right touches - beautiful bath big enough for two; wonderful shower; bed to wallow in. Lovely airy feel with windows/shutters out onto the street where you can watch the world go by.

Breakfast is stunning with a bowl of fresh fruit, fresh croissants/baguettes, nespresso coffee, etc in a room to energise the start to your day. Victor was a terrific host and was able to point us in the direction of a couple of restaurants, the first of which was particularly satisfying.

There's also the small, subterranean spa which is a real bonus, particularly since with only four rooms there's not exactly a queue for the steam room!

All in all, highly recommended, particularly for couples.

Only unusual note was meeting an American couple who complained that lunch/dinner in France often took 2-3 hours when they could be ticking sights off a list. If that is your aim when visiting France/Aix, then think again. If your aim is the triumph of quality over speed while you savour the delights of an unhurried, slow self-marinade of an historic 2-3 bottle lunch, then get booking now. This is one thing you should rush!

I want to start by saying a huge thank you to both Victor and Carren. They are perfect hosts and were so kind and helpful and answered all our questions. This hotel has been reviewed a lot and I can only endorse all the lovely things that have been said. Wonderful comfy beds, lovely breakfast, suburb location. Super clean and attractive with an interesting history and a very warm and inviting feel. Mostly we loved the idea that we could help ourselves to tea, a croissant and a cold drink from the fridge when ever we felt like it. We had rented a house for a few weeks and so we arrived with some things that required the fridge. carreen made room for us in the fridge and we settled in.
I don't think that I have an criticism except to say that this is not a place for those who struggle with stairs. Hopefully we can return one day. A suggestion for the owners, the concept is amazing, you do such a great job, we think you need to start a brand and go for it!
