We had a wonderful experience staying at La Maison d'Aix. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by Karin, who oriented us to the Maison d'Aix and helped bring the luggage up to our room. She then graciously jumped into the car to guide me to the parking garage, which was very close by. Having previously helped to arrange dinner reservations, she had a map ready for us that clearly marked where the restaurants were located. The following morning, we were treated to an outstanding breakfast that included fresh croissants, fruit, juice, and coffee. Karin was off duty for the latter part of our stay, but Victor took over. Victor was incredibly friendly, enthusiastic, and accommodating. It was a lot of fun chatting with him, and his fruit salad was awesome!
The location on quiet side street was great. A short walk to the main street, Cours Mirabeau, and just beyond that the wonderfully quaint and picturesque old city that was filled with interesting shops, restaurants, fountains, and plazas. We discovered a beautiful and peaceful garden at the Pavillon de Vendome, and had a great lunch outdoors at L'Archeveche Cafe near the cathedral and tapistry museum. Although the views were nice, the Atelier Cezanne was a disappoinment and the hike up the hill past a large construction project was probably not worth it. (Another guest enjoyed the Cezanne Walking Tour, which interestingly did not include the trip up to the Atelier.
One of the highlights of our stay was a trip down to Cassis - a quaint old port village that was about a 40 minute drive from La Maison. Highly recommend the 90 minute boat ride that took us to multiple calanques, which are breathtakingly scenic coves amongst the very high rocky cliffs. They run shorter boat rides that show fewer of the calanques, but the 90 minutes flew by and we were really glad that we decided on the longer option. One tip: to get good seats on the boat, make sure you get on board well before the scheduled departure time.
We loved our stay and would definitely return to La Maison d'Aix. Be aware that there is no elevator, and if you go, make sure that you have them reserve a parking spot for you in the garage. There is some street parking, but it is quite limited and more expensive than the parking garage deal.
