Description: Our establishment (wi-fi free) is an italian Gastronomic Restaurant & Pizzeria. In september 2012 Italian Chamber of Commerce awarded our restaurant as the only "real italian restaurant" in Aix en Provence. Everything is home made by expert real italian cookers. We have many choices for all kind of tastes. Pasta, pizza, homemade fried food, seafood, desserts: so much know how behind...We fluently speak italian, french & english. You will keep an excellent memory of our dinner!

For our one night in Aix-en-Provence, we chose to dine at the Dal Gladiatore given the prior positive reviews posted to TripAdvisor. We found the food and service to fully merit a five star rating.

Our meal consisted of antipasto of grilled vegetables, followed by a risotto with cepes, the traditional lasagna, a green salad and a bottle of Chianti.

The antipasto was grilled and seasoned to perfection. The Dal Gladiatore stands out for having freshly prepared the antipasto, which was not smothered in a (preservative) pool of olive oil.

The risotto was also impressive. We love a good risotto and appreciate that the selected rice variety is as important in the preparation as the time from pot-to-plate. Dal Gladiatore emphasized that the risotto was Arborio (very good) and then freshly prepared the dish to just the right “creamy-ness” and body. The risotto got full marks plus for flavour.

We also ordered the “lasagna au four maison napolitaines”. Lasagna is not something we would typically order in a restaurant – too often being subjected to re-heated pasta bubbling in tomato sauce. However, we noticed that the Dal Gladiatore offered several types of lasagna, including crespelle, and so out of curiousity decided to give it a try. The Dal Gladiatore lasagna was superb, perfectly moist – but not liquid -- and with a fine balance of pasta layers to ragu filling and a subtle bechamel sauce that shone through. Very flavourful.

We even feel compelled to comment on the simple green salad. The salad was a complementary mixture of three or four greens, served with a balsamic dressing. The salad was an excellent accompaniment to our meal.

With the bottle of decent Chianti, our meal for two came to Euro 66, representing in our estimation exceptional quality for money.

The Dal Gladiatore's menu can be found on their web site as a pdf link. There are not many tables in the restaurant, so a reservation is advisable. We booked a table using their online reservation form and had a quick response. The tables are arranged over two floors, including the vaulted cellar area where we dined and which was comfortable.

Would we return to the Dal Gladiatore and/or recommend it to friends? Absolutely!

Based on recommendation from hotel concierge my wife and I ventured out to this Italian restaurant expecting great things. What we found was a average Italian restaurant with good service. The 17 euro appetizer (for sharing) consisted of six different items, all breaded and deep fat fried. No distinguishing taste among the items. All were plain and platter was not presented with any flair or garnish. The pizzas we ordered were prepared with fresh ingredients and with a thin crust as authentic Italian pizza should be. The cannoli dessert at 6 euro was a disappointment. I've had much better in Little Italy in Boston or New York. The wait staff were attentive and pleasant. This restaurant was satisfactory but I wouldn't rush out to make a reservation.

Sir, there's something I did not really get about your evening. While you were eating the starter you mentioned (our best seller…) you made me compliments about this speciality underlining its quality and you even asked me if it was possible to book for the day after…I found your review not consistent at all looking the enthusiastic reaction you had. At the end your dishes were empty and you quit the restaurant with a big smile. Why this strange behaviour? Honestly, It's me to being disappointed…Have a nice trip back to the US. Sandro GROSSI

Traveling with 2 teenagers, it wasn't easy to find a place that everyone agreed one. We found Del Gladiator walking the streets of Aix. The owner was wonderful and very attentive. He gave us great suggestions for appetizers and dinner that works for everyone. Great place for a relaxing dinner.

We had dinner at Dal Gladiatore and it was excellent! If you need a change from the typical French cuisine this is the place to go. The service was wonderful and owner was very nice and attentive. Great, cozy atmosphere. Food was very good, traditional Italian. Great change of pace from your French cuisine.

My husband and I had a marvelous dinner at this tiny restaurant on a side street away from the overpriced and mediocre restaurants elsewhere in the center of Aix. Our personable waiter greeted us warmly, speaking to us alternately in French, Italian and English, which we understood to varying degrees. He patiently explained the menu to us, and our dinners were prepared promptly and exactly as described. We both had their homemade lasagna, which was divine!! This place is easy to miss, as it is on a dark side street and does not have tables outside. Excellent value! Skip the other more charming looking restaurants near the Cours Mirabeau and head here for the real deal!
