Escale Oceania Aix En Provence
Ranked #12 of 69 Hotels in Aix-en-Provence
Reviewed 25 September 2013

We stayed at Escale Oceania for a few nights when our friends recommended against staying in the main city because of traffic issues. The hotel itself wasn't too bad, but nothing special either. The rooms are small and the bathroom and toilet divied, but okay for a short stay. The 3 stars are for the hotel as a space. However, we enjoyed our stay (5 stars!) because the people there are extremely polite, friendly, courteous and very helpful!

While we were trying to avoid city traffic by staying outside, it was ironic that on the first night when we decided to go to city for dinner, we drove round and round for an hour with no luck with parking...We drove back reluctantly to eat at the hotel restaurant (totally anti-climactic) but it actually worked out very well! We're both vegetarians and so were skeptical about the menu, but Omar (the person who runs the restaurant) was so nice and polite, he offered to prepare a custom meal for us- pizza and salad and it was fantastic! His friendly interaction and service made us go back there for dinner the following 2 nights, both with custom meals again- we didn't even bother trying the city because we felt taken care of. Over those 2 evenings, we got quite chatty and Omar even gave us tips about gifts, souvenirs, nice spots... all in all, a great stay! I only wish there was more around the hotel, but that's another discussion altogether.

We got in late in the evening and left by 9 AM the next morning, so the whole stay was less than 12 hours. I can say that the front desk staff was good, the elevators were clunky (loud and took a long time between floors), the room itself was a nice size with a good bathroom, but you could hear hallway noise clearly. Breakfast was not very good.

We booked this hotel as a stop-over on our way to the Côte d'Azur. From Aix it is only an hour and a half to Ste.Maxime, where we spent our summer holidays and with this stop-over on friday night we could easily avoid the black-saturday traffic jam. After a five hours drive from our previous hotel, we were pleasantly surprised by the Escale Oceana hotel. Very friendly staff, a nice swimming pool and one of the most efficient rooms we'd ever seen. Simply said: everything is there on a limited space. Good and free parking space outside and a ride to the city center of the very nice town (good restaurants and a nice walk through the center) will only take you a few minutes by car.
Our hotel room had a very good sound-isolation so we did not hear the busy motorway which is close to the hotel. In the morning we enjoyed a very good and varied breakfast which was included in the overnight-price. Good price-quality balance. In short: we will come back!

The hotel room was very tiny. You could barely get around the foot of the bed. The air conditioner could not be regulated by the guest, so it was too hot in the room. Other than the aforementioned, the room was fine.

Room Tip: Go on a fast for a month before you stay there.

I will write as the thoughts come to my head. This could have been a four star hotel rather than three. Just the lack of porterage and a minute lounge area near reception holds it back. The hotel is a pleasant 25 minute walk to the centre of town. If you have a car you really need to be outside town as parking is nearly impossible in town. You also have a nice swimming pool and places to sit outside in this hotel which you will not get in a hotel in town. The staff are friendly and helpful. The restaurant is closed at lunchtime but during our three nights stay they kindly made lunch for us twice. We never ate breakfast in the hotel as we preferred to take a little stroll. There is a nice bakery and small coffee bar in a parade of shops opposite and a large supermarket 5 minutes walk away. Two or three minutes walk from the hotel you can get a bus into the centre of town. It takes about 10 minutes and costs one euro. It is worth getting the bus into town in the evening for an evening meal and is a pleasant and safe walk back if you have missed the last bus. Don't drink and drive as france has a zero tolerance. Regardless of other people's comments we found the hotel and our bedroom to be very clean. Now for the bad part the bedroom is very small but adequate for our three nights, however, the hotel must have commissioned some idiotic design company to design the bedrooms who put designer chic before practicality. There was a large glass panel separating the shower room from the bedroom. As you came out of the separate toilet, particularly at night in the dark you could walk right into it with serious consequences. It is an accident waiting to happen. The horrible soap pump in the shower drops bits of soap to the floor and makes the floor slippery which could be very dangerous. I don't like using that awful liquid soap and there was no tray for me to keep my bar of soap or my nail brush etc. I had to put the bar on the floor. There were two tiny shelves, one on each side of the bed which was smaller than my book and nowhere to keep my glasses or a glass of water. Designer chic at its worsed. The space between the bed and the glass panel separating the shower room was less than 30 centimetres so you could barely squeeze through. After having said all that if you want a room in a nice little hotel for a couple of nights just outside town it was not such a bad place to be. One more thing there was ample secure free parking so you could leave your car and bus or walk into town without having to worry about parking. One last thing a small fridge, wall safe and coffee making facilities would have been very nice in the room. It could have been squeezed into all the wasted space. Aix is worth a visit.

Room Tip: Room not facing car park which is car park and motorway as it is noisy.

Room good enough. Nice bathroom. Way, way overpriced for quality. Breakfast good. BUT Do NOT Eat Dinner in restaurant. I never eat dinner in hotels and now I remember why. Worst meal in 3 weeks in Europe and they couldn't care less. Steak??? I should have eaten my shoe. Would have been tastier and much more tender. Pasta bolognese??? Would have preferred Spaghettios and yes, that is saying something. If you can get good rate on room and breakfast, then I would say ok.
