“Great stay!”
Reviewed 12 July 2012

I recently stayed 4 nights at the hotel des arts. Its in a great location a few streets away from cours mirabeau and the staff and manager were very friendly and happy to help with any questions i had. The room was very clean and tidy with air-conditioning and clean towels, sheets everyday. I would definitely stay here again, it was great for a budget hotel.

My boyfriend and I backpacked through Europe for three months last summer so you can only imagine the types of places we stayed. This was by far, hands down, the worst. We only stayed the first night because it was 11pm, pouring rain, and we had nowhere else to go. The room was small, dirty, no real door to the bathroom and it WREAKED of cigarette smoke. I get that smoking in Europe is most accepted than in America but we literally could not breath. We asked to change rooms to one that didn't smell as bad and they said "this isn't a palace." It would have been cleaner to sleep on the street. We even got new sheets and even those wreaked. It was seriously the worst experience of my life. We found a new hotel first thing in the morning. Oh, and the internet didn't work.

We stayed here for two nights in July. We found the staff very friendly and helpful. This is definitely a good budget option for Aix en Provence. The room was very small but had fan, tv, basin, very clean shower and toilet.
You enter through the back alley/street. We would stay again if passing through.

While this hotel is cheap, the quality is so poor it makes it difficult to enjoy the trip. I love Aix-en-Provence, but am sadly looking forward to leaving just to be able to finally get a decent night's rest. The rooms are bare concrete walls, basically unfurnished other than an uncomfortable bed, poorly ventilated, and in the summer are absolutely sweltering. It got so hot in the rooms we felt nauseous. And there's no elevator, so walking up and down four flights of stairs didn't help. There's wifi, but in the lobby, not the rooms. It's one of the cheapest hotels, but for just a few Euro more a night, you can stay somewhere much more comfortable.

I stayed for a night at "Hotel des Arts", and the only positive thing I could find was the price (45 euros). The location is somewhat OK, but not particularly great (far from the train station, and very far from the bus terminal). The hotel is in a pretty bad shape, with old rooms, and a smelly lobby area. There was very little toilet paper in my room, the 5 channel only TV had no remote, the bathroom door didn't close well, and there was no Internet. It is quite noisy from all sides, as walls are thin, and you can hear everything. I stayed in an excellent 3-star hotel in Antibes the day before for 45 euros (for an apartment!), and payed 55 euro for a great hotel in Nice as well. The staff was OK, but I would still not recommend this hotel.

Hotel des Arts is a small, functional hotel near the city center of Aix-en-Provence. It was a great deal (especially for Aix) at 40 euros a night for 1 person, queen size bed, with a small bathroom.

The rooms and the building are obviously old, but the rooms are kept clean and I didn't have any problems at all. I wouldn't spend a lot of time in the rooms, though - it's more of a place to crash and take a shower before heading out again.

The location is pretty good - only about a 5-10 min walk from the Cours Mirabeau, and since it's in the city center everything else is pretty accessible. Because it's on the edge of the center (on the ring road) it's also easier to find than if you had a hotel somewhere in the labyrinth of streets in the middle. You can just walk to the outside and walk around.

Note that their rules prohibit eating in the rooms, but I still brought food up there and no one said anything to me. Also, there is no elevator, and to get to the rooms you have to go up a narrow, windy staircase - so if you don't like stairs or have really heavy luggage this may not be a good option for you.

Note that the people who work at the desk don't really speak english very well (in some cases not at all). I didn't have any major problems, but I also had someone who knows French to help me get the reservation.

It is hard to find information about this hotel on the internet. It is on the Aix office of tourism website, but other than that you will probably have to call them directly or go there in person to get a room. I found about it from the Rough Guide.
