“The nicest manager we ever met”
Reviewed 7 August 2007

The hotel was really delightful. It sits right in the middle of Place du Forum with its many lovely restaurants and cafes. Our room was almost like an apartment. Christine who manages the hotel was so helpful to us. She helped us make arrangements when our trip needed to be changed and was really very kind. We will be back again to stay at this wonderful hotel.

A lovely hotel with lots of character and history, made more special by the warmth and friendliness of the hotel staff.

It was rather costly for the quality of the room, but its location and its staff more than made up for this. We arrived in Arles having had 3 sleepless nights in Avignon, and asked for a quiet room which we got. We arrived nearly 3 hours early for check-in, but the receptionist was very good humoured and accommodating.

We ate in the restaurant on our last evening - very lovely food and wine. Breakfast is expensive (14 euro for continental) but you can have a leisurely meal - no-one is rushing you and the quality is worth it (we preferred it to the 5 euro breakfast in a nearby bar, where people were smoking whilst we ate).

Yes, as mentioned by a previous profile, there does often seem to be one person staffing reception and the bar but they do this well and in a professional yet relaxed manner. It seems all the more personal for that.

This should have been a great stay - the hotel is lovely, the staff helpful - so what went wrong? To sum it up - there was no service to speak of... most of the time, there was only one person on site who functioned as the concierge, bartender, doorman, bellhop, etc - simply too much for one person to handle. Employees for the restaurant sat in the lobby (the restaurant is run separately) and the one night there was a young man helping in the bar, he had no experience to speak of and was rather ineffectual when it came to serving. It turned out that he was the son of the owner's friend - clearly he was not hired because of his skills. Breakfast was slow and laundry service was abysmal (our laundry showed up late and still damp). Please do not leave your room key at the hotel if you have anything of value as the keys are readily accessible to anyone walking in the hotel as the front desk is often unmanned (keys hang on a board near the front desk but not locked up or behind the desk - anyone can access them). The rooms are lovely and the hotel charming - this makes the lack of service all the more sad. We wanted to love this hotel but just could not.

  • Liked — Charming hotel in amazing location
  • Disliked — Lack of service
  • Tips/Secrets — If you have don't care about service, then this hotel cannot be beat for charm or location - otherwise it is truly a terrible choice

Fantastic location and an extremely friendly and helpful staff. My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights, and loved it. The staff helped us with directions to a farmhouse in the country for reservation we had made, and printed us a map so that we could easily find it. Rooms are clean and somewhat spacious.

If you arrive by bus or train, you may wish to take a taxi ($10 Euro)instead of walking until you figure out the directions around town.

Just returned from four nights at the Nord-Pinus in Arles. Outstanding staff and very good restaurant, Occitane bath stuff and a great sense of history. Arles is an excellent place to stay. There is plenty to see and it makes an excellent, easy in and out, base for daily excursions. The hotel was a little pricy but a good value.

The Nord Pinus is centrally located in historic Arles, in the Place du Forum. The hotel is beautiful, well maintained with a helpful attentive staff. We came in March and were upgraded to a large room with a balcony overlooking the square. The only drawback was that the room did not have a shower, only a hand-held shower spray, and there was no safe.

My husband and I spent a month in Europe for our honeymoon this fall, and this was by far our favorite stop in all of France and Italy. The hotel had been described to me by a friend as "the coolest hotel in the world" and I think that the description fits. It's very eccentric and arty -- the Chelsea Hotel, in Provence. Every inch of the place is decorated with old bullfighting posters, gorgeous black-and-white Peter Beard photos of Africa from the 1930s, fading photographs of Jean Cocteau (who used to stay here), old mosaic work, and so on. It has a beautiful, ruined air. We were amazed at how much there was to do in Arles that was in the same vein; in that one tiny town, there is a phenomenal record store, a large independent bookstore, an art house/movie theater/morrocan restaurant, and other chic but affordable places to eat(don't miss La Chacouterie). The only drawback, if you are exploring Provence by car, is that Arles has very, very narrow streets, and our first attempt to get to the Nord Pinus was a bit harrowing. But we adored it, and are already planning our return someday. If you go, make sure to have a drink in the quirky bar before bed...Oh, and if you go during Easter time or the summer, you can see a bullfight at the old Roman forum. Don't miss this!
