Pont Van-Gogh (Pont de Langlois)
Ranked #19 of 74 things to do in Arles
Certificate of Excellence

The original bridge was pulled down in the twenties, and rebuilt in the fifties when tourists started looking for the site.

I was really surprised reading the mixed reviews! I thought it was perfect! I loved the fact it was in the middle of countryside which on a beautiful sunny day was stunning!
We went to have a look around 4-5 pm, bought a bottle of nice wine, picnic food and a blanket and thoroughly enjoyed sitting in front of the bridge, enjoying our meal and wine and letting the sun kiss our shoulders!
There was literally no one there which was great and the previously mentioned by others abandoned, graffiti covered building next door, well just added to the Van Gogh feel, beauty and distortion all at once! I'd love to buy it!
We saw all the Van Gogh related places in Arles and by far this one was our favourite, and although some say it is not authentic at all, it felt the most authentic of them all!

Difficult to find on the outskirts of Arles, and situated adjacent to a graffiti covered warehouse type building. One guide book informed us that it wasn't even the same bridge or even in the same place as the one he painted!

We spent a week in Arles and saw most of the "Van Gogh" sites. This was not the bridge he painted nor was this the site where he painted the bridge. The original bridge was closer to Arles. The current bridge is almost an exact replica. It is located on a canal on the west side of Arles. The canal runs north-south. To access it by walking get a map of Arles and find the road that crosses the canal. You will need to cross the bridge that gets you to the access road that runs parallel to the canal along the west side of the canal. Head south (away from Arles). It is a lovely walk passing several house boats moored along the canal. It seemed like we walked a couple of kilometers along the canal. Although there was no traffic along the way you will pass a few cars parked at the house boats. Do not ask for directions at the tourist office in Arles. They do not know where the bridge is and they will get you very lost. We also found the many road signs pointing to "Pont Van Gogh" to be hopelessly confusing. Many of the Arles maps indicating the location of the bridge are wrong. The bridge is located on an old canal lock that no longer functions. There is a single lane bridge about 20 yards south of "Van Gogh's" bridge. It appears that Van Gogh's bridge is always left in the open position and exists solely as a photo op. The other bridge allows you to cross the canal to see "Pont Van Gogh" from a different perspective. This is probably not the sort of site you would want to see unless you were a fan of Van Gogh's work or unless you liked quiet, leisurely walks.

Wow, just to be right there and have your picture taken where Van-Gogh painted. Really cool. Our driver had to make a few different attempts to get us there but he kept trying and finally was successful. Worth the extra work.
