Where else could you stay that has a glass floor in the lobby that allows you to look down into the Roman ruins beneath your feet? We enjoyed the gracious public spaces and our charming room that looked down into the terrace. Breakfast was generous and had a wide selection. Our only quibble was the hotel's policy that forbid us to eat anything out on the terrace. We purchased a lovely picnic lunch at the Saturday market, but the hotel would not allow us to eat at one of the many tables on the terrace.

Hotel D'Arlatan sits in the midst of the old town of Arles. It is historic in its own right - a former private mansion built over a portion of the 1st Century Roman baths. The public areas - formal salon, dining room and bar - are impressive in size and decoration. But our room needed serious maintenance attention. Both bathtub and sink faucets were missing parts and not functioning; toilet leaked and recharged every 30 seconds; floor tiles were loose and spaces filled with debris; bed mattress was firm, but frame should have been replaced. Billed as a junior suite, it was small and cramped. Several new hotels to the south of the area (including a Best Western) were in better shape and much less expensive.

We stayed here for three nights and booked this hotel on the basis that it was right in the middle of the old town and had a swimming pool. We were not disappointed with our choice although we were given a free room upgrade (not sure why) and so that may make us a bit biased. We did not take breakfast in the hotel as it was pricey and a 30 second stroll from the front door of the hotel takes you to Place Du Forum where you can buy the same thing for half the price. Driving and parking in Arles is a nightmare and if you have anything bigger than a Smart car you could find it rather stressful navigating the one-way system of cobbled alley ways. There is parking at the hotel and prices per day vary on the size of your car (from approx 12 to 14 euros). As we had a hire car we decided not to use the car park and abandoned the car just on the outskirts of the old town in a free space for three days. The Front Desk advised that our car would be quite safe and she was right. The swimming pool is fairly small and there is only room for about eight sun loungers so I can imagine it could get quite congested in high season. We were fine and shared the pool and deck with only two of three others on an afternoon post sightseeing. The salon, bar and restaurant areas are gorgeous and rather plush for a three start hotel. The bedrooms are quirky (as you would expect in a building of this age) but our bathroom was a bit tired and could do with being replaced. On one day our room had not been made up and so at 6pm we queried this with the Front Desk. They apologised profusely advising that the cleaning staff were new and rectified immediately. They also provided us with free drinks in the bar whilst we waited. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

My wife and I stayed in hotel d'Arlatan mid-August in room 1B. The hotel location is great in the middle of the old city (althoug it is difficult to drive there, once you're in, you do not need the car anymore).
Upon arrival, the staff was not especially welcoming. Obviously they were full and did not care about another couple coming in. Room 1B is large, but rather gloomy and not very romantic. Good point: Facing the patio, it is quiet.
So in all in all, a rather disappointing experience as a romantic wek end, luckily compensated by the wonderful city of Arles.

This is a lovely little hotel. The building is old and wonderful. The rooms were clean and of a decent size. To me, the star of the place was the lovely courtyard with a fountain, and where you can take the excellent continental breakfast. Also very neat are the roman ruins under the hotel - visible via a glass floor in the lobby.

The location is close to all your major Arlesian tourist attractions.

There's something rather nice about Arles. It attracts tons of tourists but doesn't get too flustered from the summer invasions, unlike some of it's neighbours. Our second visit to Arles brought us an evening with Cesária Évora at the Théâtre Antique and a reminiscent return to a tasty creperie 'Chez Mam Gaz' near the Arena, with a one-night stay at Hotel d'Arlatan (as our first choice Hotel La Calendal was fully booked). Initially we attempted to find the hotel garage by GPS but resorted to my partner heading off by foot for the receptionist's help! The streets are very narrow and busy with folks but thankfully an attendant at the hotel parks the car for guests.
The hotel is a welcoming cooling building with courtyards, verandas, quiet décor and a sort of sleepiness that is very relaxing. The small swimming pool area was very peaceful and clean, and it was nice to take a cool dip under the hot sun. Our room was simple, clean and unfussy, but with nothing particularly special to point out. The bed suffered from very floppy soft pillows which I'm not so keen on.
In my opinion it's overpriced compared to most of the places we stayed over the next 3 weeks and this is the only reason I would not recommend it to a friend.

This hotel is a must do! Originally the hotel was the home of one of the dukes of Burgundy and before that the romans built here. Part of the lobby floor is glass so you can see the roman ruins underneath. The room was large with a beautiful and spacious armoir and an elegant feel. There is a lovely courtyard surrounded by stone walls with a fountain complete with turtles. If you take the breakfast it is a wonderful place to start the day (buffet with eggs, meat, cheese, fresh fruit salad, croissants, pastries, cereals, etc.) There is a second courtyard with a pool - again surrouned by stone walls. The square with Van Gogh's cafe at night is literally just down the road. Most of Arle is within walking distance from the hotel. The bull games are fun at the roman arena - bulls are not hurt in any way. Near the roman theatre is a great restaurant - Le Criquet. Great food in a cozy atmosphere. Les Baux ruins are a short drive away. The only tricky part of this hotel is finding it - it is within the old section of town with narrow streets. Some of the streets are blocked off at certain times of the day so get clear instructions from the hotel. They do have a garage for a fee. The hassle of finding it is definitely worth it. This hotel feels like a little sanctuary.
