“Nice, but they do not like being paid with big notes.”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

We stayed at the Cloitre for two nights on 10/16/13. Everything said by those who made positive comments we agree with: it is a charming place, very well located and with very good staff. My only unhappy experience happened at the time of check out when the clerk refused to accept a 500 Euros note as payment for a bill of over 200 Euros. She gave the lame excuse that, at noon, she did not have enough cash to give me back the change. Please!! She was not even helpful on directing me to a place where I could obtain change! There was no negotiation. I had to pay with a credit card, something that I was trying to avoid. I am very unhappy about this rigidity.

We stayed 3 nights here during the photo expo in the summer. The hotel is set on a quiet street but is very centrally located. The rooms (we had a superior double) are spacious, clean and comfortable, with a lovely and original decor. The bath products are from L'Occitane brand and smell great.

Breakfast is buffet style with good bread, croissants, pain au chocolates plus ham, yogurt, cheese and many local jams, fresh fruit, etc. The price is €13, which turned out to be reasonable when you compare what restaurants in the area charge for non-buffet style breakfasts.

The staff were wonderfully friendly, helping us with parking details and our bags, making recommendations and just overall very professional.

The rooms do not have air conditioning but they do have big electric fans, which mostly do the job.

Two things: I would have loved a full-length mirror in our room and the tables in the breakfast room - although pretty to look at - are designed with grooves, which means you have to carefully balance your coffee and plates on the upper ridges (unpractical in all cases).

We enjoyed our stay!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Located on a quiet street in the historical centre of Arles, the Hôtel du Cloître is just steps away from the Roman Theatre, Amphitheatre and the main square, “Place de la République”. Thanks to the cool shade of a majestic 100-year-old Paulownia, the entrance of the hotel reminds us of an appealing authentic little Mediterranean village square. The hotel reopened its doors in July 2012 after being entirely renovated and now features an interior design combining sobriety and warm colours, the signature of the designer and architect India Mahdavi. With its 19 rooms, the hotel has an intimate feel with a cosy and welcoming atmosphere. In our lounge, make yourself comfortable and consult our wide collection of books on Arles history, the Camargue, the arts and photography. Our bright spacious rooms and suites are comfortable and supplied with ceiling fans, Wi-Fi, cable flat screen TV, hairdryers and direct landline telephones. Our bathrooms are equipped with either a bath or an Italian shower. On the rooftop terrace, our bar offers a stunning view over the Saint-Trophime church steeple. ... more   less
