Tucked away in a characteristically narrow street close to the banks of the mighty (and lonely) Rhone River, is Hotel Musee, an attractive and atmospheric place that welcomes the traveler with fair prices and a pleasant stay in the city of Ancient Rome and Vincent Van Gogh.
At about 90 euros per day, including breakfast, Hotel Musee represents good value for money. We had a most enjoyable and relaxing two-night stay in what was our introduction to the fascinating small city of Arles. Our double room, number 21, was tidy and came with a small TV, desk. and air conditioning, but it was very tight, with little room to move around. Indeed, the overall size of the room, excluding the bathroom, was the most disappointing aspect of our stay. The bathroom, on the other hand, was rather large relative to the size of the bedroom. It featured a contemporary, Provençal-style quality that was very appealing. The lighting was bright and even, with a very large mirror. Unfortunately, the tight shower came with a curtain that was reminiscent of getting clean after a game of racquetball at the local YMCA. The towels were plentiful and satisfactory in the thick-and-thirsty category.
Breakfast at Hotel Musee is an enjoyable affair. While there is no cooked dishes on offer, there is the usual supply of cold cereals, fruit yogurts, and salami and cheeses. The peaches, while tasty, did arrive via a can. On the plus side, however, were the ultra-fresh croissants and French bread which were delivered to our table upon our arrival. That was a nice touch. It should be noted breakfast can be taken on one of the hotel's outdoor patios which are quite charming and reminiscent of a rural setting rather than a centrally located hotel.
Another of the Musee's strong suits is its location. While a mere few minutes' walk from the historic core of Arles, including the mighty Roman arena and marvelous St. Trophime Church, the traveler feels nevertheless removed from the hustle and bustle of this touristic city, and the hotel remains a lovely refuge from which tranquility can easily be obtained.
Location, a terrific price, and aesthetically charming, Hotel Musee is well worth considering when traveling to the fine and historically significant city of Arles. Try to steer of the overly tight bedroom, but do give it your full consideration.
