“Lovely exterior and polite staff”
Reviewed 2 April 2014

Stayed there at the end of March 2 nights off the back of a friend of a friend's recommendation. The setting doesn't disappoint - a beautiful old French building, with a nice courtyard, within the city walls of Avignon (meaning all the sites, restaurants, cafes, etc are within a short walking distance) and set away from the main roads (so it's fairly quiet). The inside is a bit more modern than you think, particularly the bedrooms, which is a tad disappointing as you would expect the old world charm to continue.

We had read reviews on here before booking, so booked ourselves a Double Exclusive to make sure we were in the old part of the hotel, which was the right choice. Even though the furniture and decor was modern, the large windows and shutters alluded to the history of the building (as did the large corridors and stairs leading to our room on the 1st floor). The bathroom had a bath (not used) and a large separate shower section. Was very pleased with the shower - good water pressure and hot! The toilet is in a separate room, which almost felt like a closet. I know a few people have complained about this in prior reviews. Yes it's small, but I didn't see it as a major issue.

The breakfast was OK - standard fare of croissants, pain au chocolat, sausages, bacon, scrambled eggs, cold meats, cheeses, cereals, etc.

Staff are friendly and courteous and speak good English.

We were there in the off season so it was fairly quiet. However, there was a small tour group hanging about in the courtyard (which our room looked out to) and the window wasn't doing much to stop their noise. The hallways are a bit echoey too (luckily, we had a second door we could shut to minimise some of this sound).

Didn't get to see the pool/terrace as it was closed - only opens in April. Couldn't even walk around the terrace despite the great spring weather, which was a bit of a downer...

Room Tip: Exclusive rooms are in the old part of the hotel and many of them look out on to the courtyard - lov...

The hotel on the outside is lovely and the old parts of the building are just stunning but I was really disappointed with the decor of the rooms which feel like a throwback to the seventies.
I was hoping for old world charm which it has externally but not internally.
The rooms in the new building in particular feel like a student dormitory and with exception of bathrooms feel very unloved with very sparse decor. The most annoying part was that shutters did not close completely (by design, not a fault) so there was no choice but to be wide awake by 7am due to sun streaming into the room.. unacceptable in my view!
The breakfast was OK but we got there 30 minutes before it closed and there were no more sausages or bacon but they did prepare some more for us which was nice.
Staff was polite and friendly but I would not go back if given a choice.

This hotel looks nice but has a few problems overall. We are in the new area which is starting to look tired and has a few cleanliness issues. The room is spacious but the toilet is in a closet and is hard for a normal person to fit into. The bedroom/lounge area is a good size but the bed is very close to one wall. The outside light at the door is on all night which could be annoying to some people and there are not enough lights in the main room. There are no kitchen facilities even for making tea or coffee and bathroom goodies are not replaced as you start using them. We have also had to put up with the fact that the heated towel rail doesn't work and we have had minimal hot water for 2 days now. The staff attitude toward these problems is poor to say the least as whilst they are happy to tell you that you have a problem which they did in the case of the hot water, they don't seem to have the nouce to get someone in that can fix the problem immediately. Another problem is noise as it reverberates around the new area because of the openness of it all.
Good points are that it is in the town centre and is an easy walk to the regional train station. The grounds are lovely and it is in a lovely back street with cafés and restaurants nearby. Night 4 we arrive back to the hotel to be told that the hotel has no hot water at all and they are not sure how long it is going to be before it is fixed. This to me is poor hotel management, but they ask if we would like to go to their sister hotel the grand which is on the outside of the walls about 5 minutes walk away but they have upgraded us to a better room. Having no choice in the matter we check out the hotel and the room and decide to move.

Clever conversion of an ancient building with a new accommodation block crafted on to the old monastery with the restaurant in the cloisters. helpful staff who spoke good English. Well situated just off the main road so quiet, just inside the old walls within easy reach of the main attractions in old Avignon but also a few minutes to the central station allowing easy trips to nearby towns like NImes and Montpellier so easy to explore the region. Nice buffet breakfast with bacon, eggs and sausage but lots of continental touches. Good evening meal, eat in twice and enjoyed the menu and attentive service. May not be that easy to find if travelling by car: we came by taxi from the airport at Marseilles and it took Nellie our driver a little while to find!

I am glad we stayed here but not sure if we would again. Luckily we got a real good last minute price on this place as we would've not felt it worth it to pay full price. I must admit it was great to enjoy the gorgeous setting of the hotel, really truly beautiful. We had a room (that needed a bit of TLC) in the old section in the turret part, it had allot of character and was huge by European standards. The shower room and the W/C were on a lower floor which was kind of cool but unfortunately the shower was quite moldy and the lever holding the shower head was broken so that was a bit goofy.

I must say that the staff were excellent though and with their directions the parking was super easy to find.

We did not eat there as we found it too expensive. You can walk 3 minutes from the hotel to a small brasserie and have a croissant and coffee for 2 people for 6 euros as opposed to 17 euros per person at the hotel.

This place wasn't horrible it was just ok. I would certainly not pay full price.

We stayed at Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis in Avignon, inside the walled city from October 26-28, 2013. It's a great, quiet location conveniently situated about 2 blocks from the main train station (not the high-speed, TGV station), one block from the Tourism Office (which is a great resource) with access to the Main Street.

Anissa and Sebastian at the reception were very helpful and Fanny, the breakfast attendant, was very attentive.

The breakfast offering was very high quality and our dining experience at the hotel, the evening of our arrival, was excellent.

We had a room in the 'modern section' which was fine, although somewhat dark. The Wi-Fi was weak and should be upgraded to provide a consistent and strong signal.

Overall, the benefits of the property, staff and location far outweighed any limitations we experienced from this former monastery converted to a hotel...but, it needs attention in a number of areas.

There is a very beautiful courtyard surrounded by the monastery. The rooms are unique and ours was small, but don't go when it is warm. We had the air from our open window at night and that was all. There was a very nice breakfast in the morning for an extra charge. They had eggs, bacon, sausage, all kinds of breads, baked goods, cheeses, cold meats, juices, fruit and cereal. The best part was eating in the dining room overlooking the courtyard. There is a beautiful fountain in the middle of the courtyard. It is peaceful but I would book a superior room not a regular room.
