“It is about the location”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

The reason for choosing this hotel is its nice location in an old cloister with a modern dependence. Good also is the parking facility, just behind the building.

Room was average - large is size, but probably not the right value for the price. For example, water would not flow easily out of the bathtub. Room may have been 'design' in the 90's, but unfortunately stayed stuck there.

When we stayed there, the festival had just started - we loved the atmosphere in the city even though it becomes very busy and slightly overwhelming.

We stayed here for a week in June of this year and were very glad that our first choice had not been able to take us.
First of all, renting a car in Marseille and getting lost a couple of times en route, despite the sat nav, meant that we arrived very late. We found the hotel but not the promised car park. The receptionist gave us precise directions to it and we were parking the car in the secure car park at the back of the hotel within minutes. Entrance to the hotel from the car park is through an archway into a large, shared courtyard.
After a mildly hair-raising drive on the 'wrong' side of the road, and the updated sat nav map trying to send us the wrong way down a very busy road in the suburbs, we felt we deserved a long, cold glass of wine. However, by the time we came downstairs again the bar was closed and, unlike home, there was no alcohol available even for residents. This was not a problem as just up a short street and around the corner there were any number of bars and restaurants still open, so the celebratory drink was obtained and enjoyed.
I have read other reviews of the hotel and complaints about the rooms in the new wing, in one of which we stayed. One quibble I will agree with is the lack of a mirror in the bedroom, although there is one in the bathroom and a full length one in the corridor. The room is obviously perfect for business people having a desk and no shortage of electrical sockets. Yes, there is a narrow space between one side of the large double bed and a wall, but I can't say it ruined our holiday. The bed was very comfortable, the air con worked, and the balcony was a nice addition with sliding doors to it from the bedroom. Another reviewer complained about the lack of curtains, but with the balcony equipped ceiling to floor with shutters (in sections, so that some parts could be open and others closed) this really was not a problem. There was no shortage of chairs, and there was a very comfortable sofa and a coffee table, and the room was spacious. The rooms also have a 'fridge stocked with soft drinks. Some reviewers complained about the bedrooms being spartan and not at all what they expected. I have no doubt we could have asked to be moved to a room in the old part of the hotel, but we were happy to stay where we were as it was so quiet, and we slept very well indeed - even on the night of 21 June when bands, groups, musicians of all kinds and a drumming band filled the city with happy, musical bedlam.
We found the staff friendly and helpful. The self-service breakfast was very good and plentiful. The service, when needed, was excellent. We were sorry that we dined in only on our last night as the food was simply outstanding. If you're staying elsewhere in Avignon, I would recommend treating yourself to dinner at the Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis. It was one of the highlights for us.
The hotel has a large dining room but we breakfasted, and dined that one time, in the courtyard garden.
So, to have peace and quiet within the walls of the city, secure parking for the car, friendly and helpful staff and superb food - I highly recommend this hotel.
It's not the cheapest, but was it worth it? Yes, it certainly was.

Room Tip: If you want a room in the old part of the hotel just be sure to ask for this upon booking. Some of t...

The south of France is hot in the summer. So were our rooms. The air conditioner pumped outs slightly cool air. None of the hotel is air conditioned and the rooftop pool was out the week we stayed there. Cut our visit short.

Room Tip: Ask for first floor.

We stayed here for two nights last week and had an overall good experience. The staff was friendly and helpful, especially since we arrived very late at night due to a travel delay. We stayed in the old wing of the building which looked out over a lovely city courtyard full of plane trees. Rooms are large and very clean. My only complaint was the soft mattress but I suppose that is a matter of choice. The breakfast was plentiful but seemed expensive for what it was. It would have been nice to have it included in the room rate. Overall, this was a good place to stay due to the location, interesting renovation of an old cloister and the helpful staff.

My rating would be somewhere between Average & Very Good.
Magnificent old building & staff we very helpful and friendly.
We stayed in a superior room overlooking the bar garden which was very spacious & quiet(and in the more modern hotel addition).
Breakfast was good. We didn't eat at the hotel restaurant.
Wi-Fi was good also.
Only real criticism was that they had synthetic doonas which made for a slightly uncomfortable sleep( too hot)

The staff were friendly, the room was clean and spacious. The hotel itself is very cool; an old building with a nice courtyard and 17th century decor. Great location, a 20 minute walk from anything you would want to see in Avignon.

I recently stayed 3 nights here as part of a tour in Provence and really enjoyed the hotel. The view of the courtyard from the room was charming. The room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. The view from the dining room into another courtyard was also lovely. The included breakfast had a good selection. The location was also perfect - just a short walk to the Pope's Palace and other nearby attractions and restaurants.
