“lingering smoke”
Reviewed 5 August 2014

When we walked into this lovely hotel I smelled smoke at the reception area and requested a non-smoking room. I was told that the entire hotel is non-smoking, that ashtrays are provided in the rooms just in case, but that the "hotel policy" is definitely non-smoking. When we entered our room, prominent on the table was not only an ashtray but a book of matches with the hotel's name emblazoned upon it. Our room smelled clean, and the pillows did not have a trace of smoke smell. But when we went down the hallway we did smell smoke.

The bed is comfortable and the location ideal.

We stayed for 3 fabulous nights at the Hotel d'Europe in Avignon; I wish it was for longer! This was an amazing hotel. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. The location is just within the city walls within walking distance of the Palais des Papes and Pont d'Avignon, as well as being perfectly placed for heading out of the city on day trips to Nimes, the Pont du Gard, and Aix-en-Provence. If you are arriving by car or taxi, you can pull up right onto the curb outside the hotel The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful - full of old world charm and grace. Our room was on the back wall of the hotel, so it was lovely and quiet at night. The room was huge and very comfortable, as was the bed! The bathroom was very large too, with a good bath/shower combination. The courtyard is stunning and the perfect spot to eat breakfast or enjoy a drink in the evening. The staff at the hotel were fabulous - just as charming and beautiful as the building itself! I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and hope that I get to visit again one day. If you are looking for a fabulous restaurant in Avignon close to the Palais Du Popes check out Christian Etienne one of the best in Avignon !!!!

We stayed here for 2 nights and loved it. Really surprised at the comments below about the place being "faded". Our room was in very good condition, with a lovely bathroom. And the courtyard terrace is quaint with lots of quirky little touches. Ok, the Roman busts painted bright orange which appear all over the hotel might not be everyone's cup of tea, but I like their individuality.

Staff were extremely polite and attentive to us throughout.

One final point: Avignon in Festival season is extremely crowded and noisy. Hotel dEurope is by contrast a calm oasis. Would definitely recommend!

This hotel is in an old charming house. Here you will find good old classic chic and elegance. The staff is super welcoming and friendly. Loved the valet parking service. The hotel has THE perfect location for visiting Avignon and Avignon festival. Avignon is quite noisy and crowded under the festival. The hotel has a lovely charming terrace where you will be able to enjoy drinks and/or food in a relaxing calm atmosphere and have a break from the festival buzz.

Lonely Planet sums it up well when they say " the glamour has faded - rooms need better lighting and fabrics but its a grand address". OK so Napolean and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis have stayed there but to be honest I would be surprised if they would now. We were driving and booked for 4 nights we stayed 1 and then moved to the Novotel. There were a number of reasons but heading them up were the staff - they are living with an attitude back in Napolean's time. Like another writer says you asked for some assistance - they say they will deliver - and then nothing happens. In our case it was pretty important - we needed boiling water for to assist with minor medical requirements - there are no kettles in room so we asked for boiling water at reception. This was a huge ask it appeared - the reception called the duty manager to discuss the challenges they had with this request - said they would get back to us which they didnt. We needed boiling water so we checked out. The room while a good size looked tired, air conditioning not working efficiently, there is no on-site parking every time you need your car they need to retrieve it from another location. Hotel d'Europe needs some serious money spent of refurbishment, a complete retraining of their staff and bring the whole operation kicking and screaming into the 21st century. Not recommended!

Room Tip: If you are travelling Provence in a car you are much better outside the walls at places like the Nov...

Doesn't get better than this! Highly recommend a stay here. Rooms were amazing. Staff was always polite, friendly and helpful. Location doesn't get better. Delicious breakfast in the courtyard under a tree planted in the mid 1700's!

We can only add to the high recommendations for this hotel which on the whole lived up to expectations. The hotel is in an ideal position next to the City Wall at Porte de L'Oulle and very close to the Papal Palace. We had a premier room for a week which was very spacious and cool. Despite overlooking the street the room was very quiet (apart from the evening France won a World Cup match - very quiet when they lost to Germany though). Internet is very fast. The staff at reception are very friendly and helpful. A few minor gripes. The breakfast buffet at €22 is shockingly overpriced although the fruit and bread were top quality, but the hot part of the buffet is bacon and sausage, not of much use to non eaters of pig. Eggs cost extra! We only did that once. There are plenty of cafes and boulangeries nearby, go to those. We ordered a pot of tea in the wonderfully cool courtyard one afternoon and being English we asked for milk. It was served with hot milk. Ne jamais jamais pas. We drank it black. Finally we never take anything from the minibar, its such bad value. Nevertheless a €5 charge was inserted on the bill. I spotted this and they cancelled it. What I did not notice until I got home was another €6 higher up the bill. Miniscule compared to the cost of the hotel but irritating nontheless.
Finally, and I'm sure 5* hotel users only ever use taxis - but if you do arrive at the Avignon Central Station by the City Wall (as the direct St Pancas Train does), the queue for the taxis can be very long. If you cross the road in front of the station, enter the town through the gateway and on the left you will see several bus stops. Routes 5 and 40 both go the four stops to Porte L'Oulle which is no more than 100m from the hotel.
