Avignon Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel claims 4 stars but I think around 3.5 stars is about right for this place.

Its an older, rustic style establishment. We had a renovated suite. The advertised rack rate is 260 euro for our room.

We had a double bed on a queen sized base so it was a bit too tight for us. The room had a seperate lounge- sitting area and a seperate bath and shower which was good. The air con struggled on our 30 degree day. Thankfully the windows opened, but mosquitos were a problem until we noticed a large can of spray was supplied and in the cupboard, so this problem was quickly dispensed with.

We found the staff not overly friendly, seeming to hold back a bit, but were pleasant if we made the first move and greeted them first with a smiling "bonjour". A smile always goes a long way, especially if it comes from you.

The hotel is in an excellent location right in the centre of the city. It has a small pool accessed from the second floor.

Breakfast/ Quite ok- nice cheeses, breads, juices, boiled eggs, fruit, some pastries, scrambled eggs, bacon etc. 7/10

Overall?..... A comfortable place to stay, lacking the "bling" of newer hotels- It had free WiFi.

I would stay again. 6.8/10 In my view.

We had earlier booked to stay 2 nights there because of its proximity to the train station. Upon arrival, we discovered that its location is excellent for all the tours we wanted to catch, and all the walks we took in the surrounding area. Our stay was extended twice, and we eventually stayed a total of 6 nights. The room was spacious, the bathroom looked newly renovated and the WiFi was simply great. The front desk was very helpful in rendering assistance, giving information about the place and helping us book restaurants for dinner. Very good value for the price we paid.

Beautiful hotel, very spacious! Great buffet breakfast, helpful staff who were very concerned when my friend's bag was stolen. Well located right next to Avignon Central train station and only a short walk to local restaurants and shops.

Located right beside the train station so,good for weary travelers. But mold growing the showers, dark dingy hall ways and overall could use some TLC.

Room Tip: Had a great view of the parking lot. Not sure if there was better but pretty lame first morning view...

We stayed here one night as we were passing through Avignon. The room was very comfortable with a lot of space. The staff was very helpful and the breakfast was normal for a stay in France.
The walk to the city center was 2 blocks away.

This is a lovely hotel and a great location in Avignon. We stayed two nights and found the hotel very clean and the staff so friendly and helpful. I think two days was too short and recomment at least three days or four if you have a rental car. We did not go North to Orange or any of the areas where the lavendar blooms as it was not the time of year but you would want a full day to do that alone. We did go to St Remy and Les Baux which are both recommended. Dont miss the Carrieres de Lumieres. We came upon it accidently and were so glad we did. It is a great man made cave in which they project a fabulous show along with beautiful music. When we were there we saw the Gauguin and Van Gogh pictures illuminated on the walls. It was breath taking. Another day trip we took was to the Camargue area where we saw flamingos and white horses in the wild, A beautiful drive. Another day was spent in towns such as Roussillon, Village des Borles and Menerbes. It is such a beautiful area and then you need time in Avignon. So take my advice and stay no less then three nights.

Room Tip: We booked thru a third party and didnt realize a double wasnt two beds..so make sure to but somethin...

but I can't say that about our room. Poor lighting & ventilation. No way to run the fan without the heat being on. The only way to relieve the heat and stuffiness in the room is to open a window or door to the balcony. The window and a door open to a long balcony shared in common by about 5 or 6 other rooms in this wing, which provides no security. One morning, a stray cat wandered into our room from the balcony. In the closet, there was a large spray can of insecticide; not a comforting find. The adaptor for my electric shaver would not fit into the recepticle in the bathroom because of a bulge in the holder for the hair dryer; had to shave while sitting on the bed without a mirror. Requested a wake-up call one morning and never got it. Fortunately I awoke in time for us to catch our scheduled tour bus. Breakfast was included; adequate variety of fruits, cereals, breads, cheeses, pastry etc. Front desk staff was cold and not very helpful. I don't understand how this place rates 4 stars.
