“Comfortable hotel just outside the walls.”
Reviewed 16 August 2013

Our second stay at this hotel and used it as a base to visit other places. Spacious rooms with a sitting area, air conditioning. Needs a bit of refurbishment decor wise. We didn't eat breakfast there as it was too pricey but breakfasted in the town for about 8 euros each. Location is just opposite the walls near to the train station. Avignon itself in the daytime is pleasant but in the evening it is littered with beggars and down & outs with dogs and can be quite intimidating. The town council needs to clear them out as it is not appealing to the visitor. We will not visit Avignon again based on this experience.

Room Tip: Just book a standard room as they are plenty spacious

Stayed at the Avignon Grand Hotel for 3 nights in July. Temps were very hot in Avignon (and area) which we anticipated. I knew we needed a hotel with air conditioning and also wanted one with a pool. Our room was lovely, faced the garden and the train station (centre ville train station was handily next door). We often choose to have windows open to hear the cigale and get a breeze. TV is oddly in the bedroom side instead of sitting room side, but we didn't really use it so that wasn't an issue. Bathroom was large and very clean. Beds were a little hard and could've been softer (coming off of the Heavenly Beds at the W so noticed a real difference) but overall we were very pleased with the hotel.

We used the hotel pool two evenings. The pool is VERY tiny and we chose to go up later when others weren't there. Popped out heads up there when we first arrived and it was full of about 14 people - it looked like a pot of "people soup". Evening was quieter up there and we were able to watch the lovely sunset over Avignon.

Hotel is directly across from the city walls, and a very easy walk into many restaurants, shops and tourist sites. Definitely recommend this hotel.

we stayed here in first week of Aug and would not return. On arrival we were told we had 4 rooms booked, instead of the 2 rooms that we had in fact booked. The check in staff were very unfriendly and unhelpful and said we would have to sort it out with Expedia as the booking was through them. they told us unless we sorted it we would be charged for all 4 rooms on check out. we then spent the next 2 hours speaking to Expedia on Skype (they were great!) and then reporting back to checking staff. Ntwithstanding Expedia emailing and phoning the hotel to advise we only had 2 rooms booked reception still choose to ignore it. it was very stressful and ruined our first day there. in the end when we checked out we were only charged for the 2 rooms we had booked but hotel offered no apology, and seemed very surprised when we expressed our frustration when we checked out. Aside from that the hotel is ok. pool is tiny, and as other reviewer advised their is virtually no shade there, we also experienced 35 degree temperatures when there so siting by the pool really wasn't an option. I would not recommend anyone stay here, the only plus was the location, and AC in room.

Room Tip: go to another hotel!

Four star? Not.
Entrance etc looks wonderful...rooms are just not what you would expect.
We had 223, a long walk from the lift. No terrace which the others had on this floor. It did face the quieter garden side though which is what I requested.
On arrival we were confused by the parking...they did not seem to be able to help....we clarified things though easily as my wife is a French speaker and could clear it up.
Air con not particularly powerful, but functional. Room was clean etc, but they removed the glassed once they worked out we were bringing in our own drinks.....handy.
Pool area we did not use - it had not shade and very few seats/loungers. It was well over 35 degs and we would had loved to se=it and read up there....but with no shade!
Been to Avignon before so knew the location was great.
Bed was lovely and big (two singles pushed together) and we had a sitting room - the TV was in there rather than the bedroom....wrong way round in my opinion.
Staff were mostly very glum, one was nice though when we spoke to her....Deborah I think her name was.

Room Tip: Ask for the garden side and a terrace.

Our trip in early Jul'13 to Avignon was excellent - before their Festival. English speaking staff was very helpful. Rooms were very clean; our triple room had the extra sitting room which gave us plenty space to stretch out.
Our stay did not include the 16 euro breakfast which was a lot for what was offered. I did the next best thing - got up & went to the train station next door for croissants or ham/cheese sandwich; or to Le Carre de Ble for the best breads & patisseries in town. Markets inside the walls seem a bit scare, but did find them about 15 minutes away from the hotel.

Room Tip: Taxi trips to/from TGV station should not include a 1 euro fee for luggage. We got scammed on this...

The Avignon Grand Hotel is not the most exotic Hotel we stayed in on our tour through France. But it is very comfortable and folks have it right...It is just outside the walls of Avignon. It's a great jumping off place and we found the staff very helpful. I would go back anytime. Frankly, I would right now but I am in Kansas and it is home. Toto is here.

I guess how much you pay for a room always affects the review, and though there on business, my stay happened to coincide with the Avignon Festival when all hotels are sold out, so the 280 Euro per night prie of a standard double room was probably twice as much as it really should be. Hotel's situation is 'handy', just outside the old city ramparts and next door to the central station and around the corner from the bus terminal. You can walk into the heart of the old town in 10-15 minutes. Breakfast was a good and well-stocked buffet, wifi was free and bed and shower were both good quality. But the hotel is pretty basic when all is said and done, the walls all just white painted with no real 'decor', the bathrooms looking like a 70s or 80s refurb, and the general ambiance definitely not the luxury that 280 Euros per night would suggest. However, it is a good hotel and a decent choice in Avignon, and my room facing the inner courtyard was really quiet despite the proximity of the railway and main road.
