My husband found this beautiful hotel for us and what a location and what a gorgeous hotel. We were directly across the street from the Palace of the Popes and this hotel was actually one of the Cardinal's homes. They have done a beautiful job of restoring this hotel. The service was excellent and the rooms were fantastic. I would stay here again in the future...without a doubt!

Choices are pretty limited around Avignon and this is probably the best or one of the best. It's a very charming hotel with classic provencal architecture, period decorations and furniture, photos on the web are pretty representative.

There was a bit of a sense of past glory though, felt a little like the Grand Budapest hotel from the Wes Anderson movie. They seem to run on a skeleton crew, the staff are outstanding and helpful they are just frequently stretched thin, even though the hotel didn't seem to be at capacity.

Bigger issue was the room was really hot. The a/c is a sad little unit and couldn't make a dent. It was probably around 85 degrees in our room at night (over 100 outside when we were there in June), which made it hard to sleep. I think we paid over 800 USD a night, so you really shouldn't have to deal with a hot room at that price.

The dinner in the kitchen with Chef Jean Claude, which you can book even if you aren't staying at the hotel, is really fun and highly recommended.

Dear Costand1,

thank you very much for the information shared. We were delighted to hear that you enjoyed the hotel as well as the chef's table.
Regarding your comments on our staff, we are disappointed to hear that you felt you did not receive enough attention from our part. The satisfaction of our guests is a constant concern for everyone at La Mirande. That is why we thank you for this feedabck, that we will use to improve ourselves.
You also mentioned our air conditioning. We are surprised to hear that you weren't happy with the temperature in your room as the system is brand new and was installed last winter.

We hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you again in the next future and giving you an entire satisfaction.

Best regards.

This hotel is simply superb! It feels at once grandiose and intimate. With fewer than 40 rooms, it certainly has a boutique feel, but the scale and sumptuousness make take it to another level. Its location is also unmatched, as it is directly across from the Pope's Palace, and just a few steps from the main city square.

As we drove up, the bellman (who was wonderful our entire stay) welcomed us by name and took our bags and car. The check-in experience was great, and we were shown to a room looking right at the Pope's Palace.

The room was beautifully appointed, and while the furnishings felt period, every modern luxury we could imagine was at our finger tips. The closet had a refrigerator with complimentary water that was so appreciated. I detest paying for bottled water at fine hotels, so it was a wonderful amenity. Our welcome gift included the most delicious yellow apples we'd ever eaten. The housekeeping and turn-down service were great. When you return to your room in the evening, it's been transformed -- with the shutters closed and lights dimmed, it's like a completely different room. My only complaint about the room would be the bed linens. We found the sheets to be overly starched for our tastes, to the point where they felt rough. However, they were clearly of high quality.

The common areas of the hotel are gorgeous. There are several salons perfect for having a drink and conversation. Some spaces are larger, while others are intimate. The staff did a great job serving us and spoke perfect English.

We ate in the restaurant for dinner, and the food and service was excellent. The breakfast buffet was wonderful, and worth the money (in my opinion, most buffets are not).

One thing to note, that we were completely ignorant to, is that Avignon has extremely narrow streets (I guess we should have known since it's an ancient walled city) -- as in maybe one foot of space on either side between the car and a wall. It was a harrowing experience, but we made it. I think it would have been a slightly less stressful experience if we'd known in advance, but that has nothing to do with the hotel.

I highly recommend La Mirande, and would stay there again if I ever find myself in Avignon.

Dear Sir, Dear Madam,

it has been a great pleasure for our team to read your comments on La Mirande and to hear that you had a good stay with us.
We would be delighted to welcome you again in the next future. We are aware that streets are quite narrow at the very center of the city (which is also part of the charming atmosphere of Avignon). Would you feel insecure to reach the Hotel by car, feel free to call us and the valet will help you driving through the bystreets.

Best regards.

La Mirande is a lovely hotel in the old city of Avignon. The rooms are decorated in a very country French style. My room had a balcony with a view of Palais des Papes and the rooftops of the city. A nice retreat on a sunny day. The hotel staff were great and the gardens are very inviting for drinks or dinner or breakfast.

One of the most beautiful outdoor seating space i've seen.
The hotel is gorgeous and beautifully decorated. It's expensive but it's a 5* hotel. The service is good although on a fee occasion we couldn't find staff.
Would recommend this place for drinks or food.

Dear Sir, Dear Madam,

thank you very much for having taken the time to write on your experience at La Mirande. We are delighted to read that you enjoyed your stay and were sensitive to the very special atmosphere in our hotel. Nevertheless I also would like to apologize for the inconvenience you are mentioning in your revue : you said that , at one point, you had to wait for someone from our staff. As a five star hotel, we put considerable stress on the service's diligence. I will therefore share this information with our staff and we will use it to improve ourselves.

Thank you very much and best regards.

First let me say that our tastes very much lean towards simple and modern. The ornate, lavish, country decor of this place is not normally to our tastes, but we absolutely LOVED it. We had two connecting rooms and they were completely different and gorgeous, with brightly colored, fabric-covered walls and lots of antiques - sooooo richly textured. It was really pretty wonderful. And yes some of the furniture and rugs are worn, but nothing struck us as unappealing. The bathrooms were a very nice mix of old world charm and modern amenities. The common areas are just as lovely, especially the bar.
The service was very good - a touch formal, but far from rude, and very efficient & helpful.
The breakfast buffet was tasty, though overpriced. I believe you can order ala carte, which makes a lot more sense if you just want something small.
The pricing of the entire place is pretty high, as many have said. I'm not sure if it's "worth" it, as it's pretty hefty. But it's so unique and wonderful that perhaps it is. It's a GREAT splurge,
The location next to the Pope's Palace is pretty amazing, though it does mean there's noise during the day. Our room was in the front, with the crowds, and it wasn't too awful, but I did hear them a bit at nap time :) Not a peep after 10pm.
I do have to disagree with the recommendations of the Table d'Hote Tuesday & Wednesday dinners in the basement kitchen. While we had a fabulous time chatting with the other guests and the chef, who is a real character, I found the food to be mediocre at best (and not much of it). If it were 50E a person, I'd be much less critical, because it is a great time. But at 86E, it should be both fun and delicious.

Dear Guests,

Thank you very much for your nice comments and the time taken to share your impression with the other internet users.
We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay at La Mirande even if you weren't very happy with your dinner at the guest table. You are right, our chef is a real character and the guest table is more than a dinner... it is a performance. The menu offered is the menu of the day, cooked with the seasonal producted bought on the market. The chef propose only one choice per day. I can believe that the proposal of the chef on that very day did not fit with your expectations.
We hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you again very soon and surprise you with another menu.

Best regards.
