“Good, Standard Shopping”
Reviewed 13 July 2013

The Rue de la Republique is a wide thoroughfare filled with many of the standard European shops (H&M, Mango, Zara) found in any major European cities. Its wide open feel, stemming from the 19th century, is a stark contrast to the narrow lanes elsewhere in town. For tourists, you'll find ice cream here, abotu €2.50 for the first scoop, less for the second.

“Avignon needs to clean up its act”
Reviewed 27 June 2013

We first visited Avignon ten years ago, and it has definitely gone downhill. Not just the Rue de la Republique, but the entire town suffers from dirty streets with broken glass, dog poo, and general trash. After a few hours walking to the bridge, through the Place d'Orloge, the square in front of the palais des Papes, and in the shopping area, we were happy to say au revoir. There are few public bathrooms (the staff at the information bureau recommended we not use the public ones due to their condition...) All in all, probably our least favourite place in France.

“SO much to see - and do”
Reviewed 26 June 2013

From your first step inside the city walls, to the Popes' palace at the top, Rue de la Republique has a mix of shops, restaurants, patisseries and outdoor cafes - even a grocery store (Carrefour) to keep you busy. At the top end, by the palace, you'll find street musicians and a plethora of outdoor restaurants. and beyond that, up several flights of stairs, a magnificent park

“Avingon's main drag”
Reviewed 23 June 2013

Leading from the central staion to the heart of the town, this is quite a busy road but houses the Tourist Information Centre (very helpful), some good bars and cafes, a very pretty little park with a nice cafe and the Archaeology Museum which is very small but has some nice pieces (and is entirely wheelchair accessible).
