“Beautiful! What a great stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2012

One of the most friendly and chic hotels I've stayed in for a long time, and I've stayed in a lot of places this year. The owners were so gracious in welcoming me to their hotel and their town with lovely recommendations for what to see and where to eat. My room was lovely. I sadly was only in Avignon for one night but I hope to be back and I would love to stay here again!

We arrived back for our anticipated second night at the Hotel Garlande, with me on crutches after having badly sprained my ankle during a visit to busy Sault. Nothing was too much trouble for our host. He carried bags up and down the narrow winding staircase, and even brought us up breakfast the next morning. The location in central old Avignon is very convenient, with many historical attractions close by - close enough to walk with crutches!

Room Tip: Rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors are accessed by a narrow spiral staircase, which is a little tricky...

We had no difficulty finding the hotel thanks to comprehensive directions from the Avignon Poste (where the TGV shuttle bus stops).
Our room was large and a little dark due to the narrow streets in the area. The aircon was great, the bathroom clean. The room (room 3) was sold to us as having a 'bathtub' and in fact only had a shower stall (with a very good shower). This was no problem at all for us, but I think you need to be very specific at booking if you might want to take a bath. The beds were fairly comfortable and we had no noise problems from outside or other guests (we spent 3 nights Sat-Tues).
The owners were absolutely lovely at every point of our stay. They recommended local things to do and see as well as good restaurants, bad restaurants and nice places to just sit and watch the world go by. The hotel location is 5-10min walk from Palais du Papes, and most of the sites within Avignon's walls, which was great for us.
We thought the breakfast was very good value. Cereal, fresh croissants, bread, fruit, yoghurts. One breakfast highlight was the homemade jams which we were lucky enough to sample several of- simply delicious!!
We'd come back here!

Room Tip: The cheapest rooms don't have air con (apparently). We didn't need ours for most of the nigh...

We stayed one night there and we're very happy with the hotel. Although it has only 2 stars, our room was comfortable, spacious, with air con, very clean and a good bathroom.
Great central location with easy reach to the main touristic interests.
The owners are very friendly and happy to help with anything.
We even got 20% discount on the car park (les halles).

No problem arriving by taxi, and had we arrived via the local train station (as opposed to the TGV train station), we could easily have walked. Very friendly service and only steps away from great restaurants. Pope's Palace is just a few mins away by foot. Breakfast was good, and is only about 8 euros. Owner is only too happy to answer your questions, or recommend sites to see or restaurants to try. Room was surprisingly spacious and had A/C. Great value, especially for a "2 star" hotel. Bathroom had even recently been renovated.

Only negative is that with no elevator, and a steep and narrow staircase, it wasn't easy to carry our heavy luggage up the stairs.

Over all, this was an excellent hotel!

We arrived at 11 p.m , I had emailed and told Emmanuelle we would be late so she waited up.. still smiling... we had to go up three flights of stairs in the typical old French building , right to the top! The room was very clean and comfortable and we could look out over the streets.
Breakfast was excellent.
All requests for assistance were met cheerfully and wonderful advice given for getting around.
This is a great place to stay , and it is right in the old city.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 1 night a couple of days ago. We found the hotel easy enough to find by foot, but I certainly would try to avoid coming here by car. The location is great and the couple who run the hotel are friendly and eager to please. When we arrived and asked for recommendations for things to see and places to eat we had a good chat to the hostess about the options and the hotel made a reservation for us at a restaurant.

So why the low score? Two reasons really.

The first was the noise. Noise levels from the street outside were acceptable considering the location of the hotel, but the noise from the room above ours was completely unacceptable. We were in the unfortunate position of having two drunk middle aged couples above us who seemed to be on a wife swapping holiday. We were kept awake half the night by awful groaning, people stamping around the room and loud music (trying to drown out the groans no doubt). Since the hotel desk was unattended at night, there was no-one to sort this out.

Secondly, although we had paid for a room with air conditioning, there was no controller for the air conditioning unit in the room. The room was hot and stuffy for the time that we were there and because the window had been left open before our arrival, there were mosquitos all over the place. It was explained belatedly to us the following morning that the remote controls for air con units are held at reception until asked for.

In summary we had a noisy, sweaty, sleepless night and woke up with several bites (and we used repellent).

So why even give this place a rating of 2?

Well, when we complained the next day, the host was really understanding. He was very apologetic and offered us a very reasonable reduction in our bill as well as breakfast on the house. He seemed genuinely upset at what had happened and was happy to have feedback from a couple of disappointed travellers.

At the end of the day I guess we were a bit unlucky, but still, the score reflects our experience.
