“Excellent choice!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 May 2014

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at De Garlande. It is a small family run hotel with plenty of character and great location in the centre of old Avignon. Our hosts were most welcoming and contributed greatly in making our stay in Avignon a memorable one. Our hosts provided detailed information on places to eat, many of which are located virtually outside the front door of the hotel. We were also given great advice on how to approach our sightseeing. Rooms have been refurbished and modernised and breakfasts were great. Our car GPS had trouble locating the hotel and car parking is not available on-site. This not a negative though as one should not expect on-site parking when staying in the centre of the old city in a period hotel. Car parking is available in a parking station close by at reasonable rates. To our hosts credit, directions to the hotel and parking options were clearly given to us prior to our arrival. I suggest you read these these carefully.

Very centrally placed and a comfortable room. The decor throughout was charming and the ensuite was modern. The breakfast was very nice in a small but charming breakfast room. The hotel obviously has a problem drying clothes as they do not appear to have exterior hanging areas. This caused an unfortunate feel to reception and the room nearby where damp clothes were spread about in the evening. In the morning all was fine but it was the sole problem in an otherwise enjoyable visit. I would like to stay there again sometime and hope this was just a one-off problem with a faulty tumble dryer or somesuch. The family are really nice and welcoming and the son carried our bag upstairs as there is no lift.

Room Tip: Rooms 1 to 3 are not high up the stairs as there is no lift.

This property is located off the main road, which cuts down on the noise. The family room is wonderful. There are a few things to keep in mind...there is no lift and it is a spiral stair case, which adds to the ambiance (it also makes a huge difference that our host carried our luggage up the stairs). The room itself is very spacious. The bathroom was also spacious, but you need to be very careful about the step down. The little things like the stairs and the step in the bathroom are part of the experience of staying in a building that has been around for hundreds of years. The service is fabulous and the breakfast is typical French breakfast. Totally worth staying again.

Room Tip: If you need to call the desk is closed between 11:30-2pm.

We had read the comments from previous guests before choosing De Garlande and we were extremely happy with our stay there for 7 nights. Emmanuelle chose a bigger room for us, which was very clean, tastefully decorated and comfortable. The huge shower was a bonus! Emmanuelle and Stephane are the perfect hosts, always going out of their way to accommodate your needs. They especially made sure that we had skimmed milk for breakfast, as we prefer this. The breakfasts were plentiful. The hotel is an ideal base for the town of Avignon and we could walk everywhere. We were also given handy tips about places to visit and about restaurants. Stephane would look up the timetables for the best trains and buses. It was refreshing to see the personal touches in this hotel and to see how passionate they are about running their delightful business. We would definitely recommend it!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 2, which has more room.

The neat little hotel is located in short walking distance from the places to see. We tried 3 out of 5 restaurants recommended by the hotel keeper lady: We were positively surprised by the respective Chef-cuisine at affordable prices: another good reason to visit Avignon.

Background:
Couple, stayed 2 nights in a family room in late April 2014.

Pros:
1) One minute walk from Place de L'Horloge, right in the centre of the old town so close to major attractions such as Palais des Papes, Petit Palais, Jardin Rocher des Doms, and Pont D'Avignon. On a quieter side street so noise is not too much an issue.

2) Family room is clean and spacious yet cosy and homely. 1 king/queen size bed + 1 single bed + 1 couch. Table and TV. Extra pillows and blankets in the wardrobe. More than sufficient wardrobe space and hangers for all our clothes for 2 nights. Safe in the one of the wardrobe. Toilet has a bath with a shower and they provide a combined shampoo and body gel. Hairdryer provided.

3) Breakfast available for a fee. Hearty fare of 3 different bread, butter, assorted jams/marmalade, honey and nutella, homemade yogurt, fruits, cereals, orange juice and tea/coffee/chocolate (refill on request).

4) Very friendly and helpful owners/managers who will give you advise on places to see/eat/visit. Good for those who want to visit other towns in the region but don't know which ones to go to. They will even lend your travel guides in English (they've got Rick Steve's, Rough Guides, etc.)

Cons:
1) Another building right across the rather narrow quiet side street the hotel is on and we can look into the rooms from our room (although this isn't a real problem for us as the rooms opposite were empty most of the time and you can always draw the curtains/close the shutters).

2) No lifts. This is a potential problem. We climbed up a spiral staircase to the 3rd floor where our room is. No problem for us as we had small luggages (and the owner has very kindly helped us bring up our luggage on the first day), and we have no mobility problems. But I believe it will be quite challenging if you are on a wheelchair/clutches or have a heavy luggage. The owner said they will be undergoing a major renovation this/next year so maybe this will improve.

3) Rather high step between bedroom and toilet. Again no problem for us as the owner had reminded us on our very first day when showing us our room. But can be dangerous if you want to go to the toilet at night and it's all dark and you forget about the step.

Overall: definitely recommend this hotel. Pros very much outweigh the cons. Would stay there if I visit Avignon again.

Room Tip: Family room is room 12 on the 3rd floor. Only have 12 rooms.

Can't recommend this lovely family-run hotel highly enough. It was one of the best hotel stays I have ever had. Nothing was too much trouble for Emmanuelle and her husband. They gave excellent advice on restaurants, travel and which sites would suit our tastes. The hotel was perfectly located between the old town sites and the regional railway station, where trains depart for Orange, Arles, Nimes and beyond. Avignon makes an excellent base for exploring the region by public transport. Apart from excellent English, they also seemed to speak German.
For breakfast lovers, this is also a marvellous address. Everything was delicious, from the croissants etc to the home-made jam, marmelade and yoghurt! There was always a good selection of fruit.
Our room was perfect (quiet, spacious and with bathtub) as Emmanuelle had taken care to cater for our needs. I had phoned to check out details of the rooms and she wrote several Emails to make sure we got what we wanted.
Thank you for making our holiday so special!
The hotel was not cheap, but it certainly is excellent value, I suspect unbeatable for Avignon.
