Description: La Vieille Fontaine at The Hotel d'Europe is one of the best gastronomic restaurants in Avignon. Either in our 18th century woodwork dining room with paintings from the early 20th century or in our beautiful courtyard, under a plane tree which is more than 200 years old, you will discover the creative cooking of our chef Mathieu Desmarest. The most privileged option, La Table du Chef, offers two guests a unique dining experience, facing the chef, right in front of the kitchen. The Hotel d'Europe offers an excellent selection of wines which includes many famous labels, as well as a large choice of original French wines.

The Michelin starred La Vielle Fontaine is situated within the prestigious Hotel d’Europe.

We like good food – are stalwart fans of the Michelin starred The Kitchin at home in Edinburgh- so thought coming here would be a high culinary point on our Avignon trip - our expectations were more than met.

The bar is a tasteful blend of old and new furniture and is a perfect spot for an aperitif. The staff members are happy to speak English or French and were helpful in translation when dimly recalled O grade French vocabulary let us down.

Normally we are not fans of outdoor eating, but Mrs MacTraveller53’s birthday lunch on 9th May in this Michelin starred restaurant was perfect from start to finish.

The courtyard, where we ate, is a blend of elegant dining furniture, an old fountain (from whence the restaurant is named), parasols and effortlessly courteous waiters who seemed to glide on castors between customers, anticipating wine and water glass refills with timely professionalism. Courses were presented with a beautiful flourish and the waiters exhibited great pride in their work and the products of their chef. Our compliments on the food were received with affirmation and delight.

We had the business lunch at 37 Euros and it was excellent quality and value.

Starters of courgettes with goat’s cheese and prawns, and white asparagus with smoked haddock were followed by cod in an herby mousseline sauce and belly of pork in an orange sauce respectively.

We both could not resist the chocolate soufflé - the richness of which was both cut by and harmonised with raspberry sorbet and roasted hazelnuts.

We accompanied this with a delightfully aromatic and complex Gewürztraminer.

Mrs MacTraveller53 pronounced this the most perfect birthday lunch – food, ambience and, of course, reinforced her belief that French cuisine is the best in the world.

Do visit here for a special meal in Avignon, you will not be disappointed.

We had dinner at La Vielle Fontaine on a recent visit to Avignon. It is located in the lovely
Hotel D'Europe. When we arrived at the dining room there was no greeting. We
got the attention of a waiter who said to sit anywhere. The very casual and unprofessional
service was not in keeping with the formal atmosphere of the room. One of the appetizers,
white asparagus was very nice, but the mackeral appetizer was not good. The waiter
brought out the sole and fileted it tableside then took it back to the kitchen because he
said it was not cooked enough. I finished my main course of lobster before the, now over
cooked, sole was returned to the table. We were asked to pre-order desserts so we wouldn't
have to wait if we wanted the Grand Marnier souffle. The souffle was presented, but the other dessert didn't arrive until I finished the souffle. Overall, not a great experience. We will not return.
