“Aux Augustines-fabulous!”
Reviewed 16 January 2014 via mobile

This is a great self service apartment right in the heart of Avignon. The owners Patrick and Sabine were wonderful- very accommodating and helpful. The apartment was very nice and very convenient as shops, laundromat and cafés were very close by. Highly recommend!

My wife and I stayed at Aux Augustins for four nights in September 2013. Our unit was a ground floor efficiency opening onto the pleasant interior courtyard. Unit was large, tastefully furnished and the kitchen was well equipped, although we only ate breakfast there. There is AC if you are there in the warm months. The location was convenient, a short walk from the major sites and within walking distance of many restaurants. Because we were making day trips out into the countryside, we arrived with a car. Aux Augustins is especially convenient for this as the shuttle bus that serves the free parking located outside the walls (the one near the University) stops right in front of the hotel. The shuttle is free and frequent and saves the hassle of negotiating the narrow streets of the walled city.

I can't say enough about the friendliness and service of the owners, Patrick and Sabine. During our stay Sabine was mostly at another property they own, but Patrick was almost always there. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon and they put on a lovely wine and cheese reception for all of the guests. We had flown in that morning from the US, arriving in Geneva one bag short-mine. I don't think I would have ever got it back without Patrick's help. He made several phone calls for me when my limited French didn't work and even went with me to the local post office several blocks away when the bag finally caught up to me.

I highly recommend this property and will be sure to stay there on my next visit to the area.

Pluses: The hotel is an absolutely beautifully renovated sort of small monastery. Design furniture creates additional atmosphere. And a small inner court with nice seats and artistic lightning further adds on this impression. As such, it is a very romantic setting, where you may believe you are in medieval times again (apart from the modern equipment of the 21st century). Due to its layout, there is no noise from the street - an exception in France. The host Patrick is friendly and supportive. Absolutely to be recommended for leisure travellers and romantic couples.

Minuses: The place is not really a hotel. The apartment is okay for its size, but mine was basically one room, a so-called studio, rather than apartment. There is no lobby to receive your business guests, neither a front desk; the owner is only at specific times available in a side room. My apartment was relatively dark, it was difficult to work on the table with a laptop. Better lightning would be a great improvement. Make sure to arrange for payment when you will check out, as the bureau does not open before 09.00 hrs.
As such, I would not recommend the hotel for business travellers. They are better served with a real hotel near the Papal Palace.

Be careful with your identity card: owner Patrick does not only check it, but insists to make a copy, even where my Dutch government strongly advises against such practice (unfortunately, no exception in France, in contrast to many other countries). You may give him a copy yourself, where then the social security number and the picture should have been made invisible. There are about 2 million cases of identity fraud already in Holland alone, make sure you are not the next victim. Picture how to protect your ID is attached.

The area around is a bit low grade, but has also some nice spots. The area which tourists favour is around the Papal Palace, 15 minutes walk.

Note: when you arrive per bus from the TGV, it is quite a walk from the bus terminal to the hotel, notably with luggage.

Overall impression: highly recommended, with a caution for business travellers. PS. AX credit cards not welcome.

Room Tip: No lift, if you have heavy luggage ask for room at ground floor.

First, a tribute to the hosts, Sabine and Patrick. They are charming people who make their guests feel very welcome and ensure that their time at Aux Augustins is pleasant. The property is about ten minutes walk from the centre of Avignon. There is a small supermarket nearby, a laverie and some excellent cafes and restaurants. Our room was spacious. The bathroom was large. We had a very pleasant outdoor table in the attractive courtyard so we were able to sit outside to enjoy our evening glasses of wine .Everything was spotlessly clean. We thoroughly enjoyed our six night stay and would choose this accommodation on our next visit to Avignon.

My husband I and I stayed five nights in late Sept. and found this a most comfortable and pleasant base for exploring Provence. First, the apartment--we had a first floor (as in up one flight of stairs) apartment with a bedroom, living room, and small balcony. Very comfortable space, modern furnishings, kitchen area is a clever closet that opens into a kitchen. On the street are three bakeries, and Les Halles market is a couple of blocks away. The regular grocery store is half a block away and has everything you need. There also is common space--a delightful courtyard. One caveat--and the owners make this clear before you rent--this is an apartment so you have to provide basics such as soap and toilet paper, and there is no blow dryer. It's not a hotel and you have to make your own bed and reuse towels. None of this was a big deal to us. We'd stay there again in a second.
The area--Avignon is not huge so you can walk anywhere. We rented a car and drove to the local towns in the Luberon etc,. visited, local wineries, went to an olive "farm" and got olive oil, and even went to the Mediterranean one day and drove between Cassis and La Ciotat on the Route des Cretes. We happened upon this on our own, but it is one of the top 10 drives in the Mediterranean on many lists, and it was a crazy great drive!! It's probably an hour and a half drive to get down there--well worth it!! La Ciotat has a waterfront with restaurants. Cassis seemed to be more upscale but more restrictive to enter. The other great thing we did that is not in the tourbooks--went to Lacoste to see the remnants of the Marquis de Sade's chateau (we didn't go in--not sure if you can). Also had a great lunch in one of the two restaurants in the small town of Seguret but that's in a Rick Steve's book so it's not a secret. I didn't like the more touristy towns of Gourdes and Rousillon as much, just because they had shops and more "stuff," but that is for the tourist to determine. You'll have a great time no matter what you choose to do and Patrick and Sabine are delightful hosts.

We loved staying at Aux Augustin. The apartment was great. I liked the decor and the space in the bathroom. Patrick was super helpful. We were happy with the location. The courtyard was a bonus. We would stay there again. It was value for money and better than other similar types of accom we stayed in during our travels on Provence.

This is a beautiful spot and they have done a great job on the design. The owners, Patrick and his wife, are nice and seem to always be around to answer any questions. We had a little kitchen that was good. The negative was the distance to the center of town and it is not in the best area. We were told it was 500 yds from the airport shuttle and we were on foot. It is their other property that is close in so it you have a car- fine but if you do not- plan on taking three shuttles to get there- one from the airport and cit intercity.
