“Lots of history”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

Loved the history of this hotel. It is my understanding that this building was in existence before the Palais des Papes was built in early 1300. Our room was large with a great view of a pedestrian mall with a plethora of sidewalk cafes. The bathroom was of a moderate size and clean. We were within walking distance of most historical attractions and spent hours walking through the area.

We were booked in here by friends. The reception and dining areas are beautiful. Breakfast was included and plentiful. Staff helpful. Our room was on the top floor and small, but comfortable, although there was no real wardrobe space and we had crowded the floor with our luggage we could not not get wifi on that floor.
The bathroom was tiny but clean.
We paid €58 per might including breakfast and felt this was good value despite obvious drawbacks of the top floor rooms, would try again.

A great find that we stumbled upon. Clean modern room within the atmosphere of and ancient stone building. 1-2 minutes walk from the Palais des Papes and other attractions. The room windows opened upon a great pedestrian square where the sounds people and music and the smells of cooking food tempted us to join in the festivities of life. The staff was very helpful and kind. The restaurant served delicious food at a good value. Perfectly followed by a cool evening walk ending a fabulous day in Avignon.

Before our trip in September, my wife and I felt like we were beating our heads against a wall trying to find a room inside the walls of old Avignon. We were striking out on Tripadvisor and Rick Steves. We found a last minute accommodation for several days. While walking through the square right in front of the Palais des Papes, we stuck our heads in the door of this hotel on a whim. The price (70 euros) and the room looked great, and the location is the best in the whole city, so we booked a room for three nights, ten days out, which turned out to be a great decision.

We stayed in room 7, supposedly second floor, but actually third. We never bothered using the lift, because we used the really cool spiral stairs. The room was tiny, with a king size bed pretty much filling the room. The walls were cut stone, and the effect was like staying in an old castle. The window opened out onto the square just before the Papes square, although other rooms did face directly onto the Papes square. The closet was the smallest I have ever seen and there was no dresser. Fortunately, we travel light. They let us stow our bikes in a secure storage room on the second floor. The bed was some sort of European foam bed, and was one of the best beds we've ever slept on. The next closest hotels to the Palais were hundreds of euros a night and reeked of snootiness.

The location is obviously very busy, but we enjoyed the hubbub wafting in through the open window. There is no real traffic noise, just pedestrian, and the sounds of diners in the the square beneath. Parts of the hotel are original to the times of the popes. We imagined ourselves as being in the center of Paris 300 years ago. (There was a high-tech air conditioner in the room that was so quiet that you couldn't tell when it was on. )

The hotel and restaurant below are a combined operation. The hotel and restaurant staff all genuinely liked each other and working there. I've never quite seen anything like this at a hotel, but the camaraderie was tangible and enjoyable. We always ordered the daily dinner specials, which were a good value and well prepared. After dinner strolls around the palace grounds and square were a perfect end to the day. There was a voucher system for breakfast, which we thought was included, but turned out to be 10 euros per person and charged to your room. We would opt out next time, as there were better breakfast options nearby.

All the hotel staff, from the maid to the front desk, were super helpful and friendly. They bend over backward to help in any way possible. Wifi was only available in a cool old central atrium.

Staying at the Hotel du Palais des Papes turned out to be a wonderful experience in itself. We've never done anything quite like it, especially for the price. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Rooms are all excellent, but vary in many ways. The desk people all speak excellent english, so call...

We had the opportunity to stay in this hotel in September 2013. The staff were friendly and the location was superb. Get details to the parking station before you go if driving because once parked in the right station, it's a short stroll to the hotel. We booked two rooms, one of which had a fantastic large balcony which was great for an afternoon drink. A continental breakfast which was quite reasonable and free WiFi was included .

Only issue was that the elevators where not working after our arrival so we had to carry our bags down when we left. Elevators do tend to be a luxury in small European hotels.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with balcony - not sure how many there are.

After trekking around the whole area looking at some awful overpriced rooms we tried our luck here. I thought it would be too expensive but to our surprise we were offered a lovely room for 70 Euros. The building is great, it has a medieval feel to it. The staff were very friendly and the underground parking was also a surprise, the stairs come up right outside the hotel.

The restaurant was full but there were overflow tables out in the square under the walls of the palace itself, the food was top quality and we enjoyed the meal immensely.

Room Tip: All rooms are unique, try for a palace view.

We stayed in this hotel for one night in their cheapest room. It is a very old hotel but has been modernised attractively. The room was booked for us by a tour company. There was no wifi accessible in the upper levels of the hotel at any time. Our room was tiny and faced the square which was only noisy during the rubbish collection at 5.00am. There was no hair drier provided as it was a cheap room and when requested I was told it could not provided until the next day as the housekeeping staff had left for the day. The hotel has a large restaurant but breakfast is provided by the cafe next door on presentation of a voucher. This meal was barely adequate. It was really a disappointing experience overall.

Room Tip: Don't select the cheapest rooms.
