I went to a different market each day for a week and this was the best - lots of variety and good prices. The wild mushrooms were amazing- some local goat cheeses were to die for; vegetables sublime as well as fish and peppers and lavender and soap! And the cooked chicken- i can't wait till next Friday! Parking hard so go early.

Be prepared to walk, the market winds around the streets with stalls selling fish abutting one selling handbags to spice to roast chicken. Everything is there just allow at least three hours to get round and see it. When it ends wait a few moments, the street cleaners appear and where minutes before you could buy a watch for four euros you will be able to sit and have ameal as the cafes reclaim the streets

We bused to Carpentras from Avignon. What you find is a huge agricultural town with a Friday market two km long encircling the town. The stall holders mainly speak French,so brush up on the lingo. The town sits on the banks of the Auzon which makes for a gentle walk.
The food and goods on display are colorful and tempting ,with ready to eat, couscouse, bouisbaisse, tantalizing marinated chicken with pestos, olives, condiments and tons of cheeses. There is mountainss of artisan breads and fresh fruit and vegs. Lots of good wines on show as this is the home of Cotes de Ventoux in Apt
The streets spill over with more than 350 stalls. The speciality of the town is the berlingots,a striped, pillow shaped hard-boiled sweets. There is a strong presence of migrants from Middle East, with the town not presenting a wealthy outlook.
Away from the market scene,Carpendras is an architecturally interesting town. The gothic cathedral,St.Siffrein is crowned by a distinctive modern bell tower and a treasury of religious art, which leads to the Roman Arc de Triumph, not far from a fine old covered passage with high domed roof.
Long parking is beside the Office de Tourism and for kids playgrounds outside of Ave jean Juaresd and Allee des Platans. Also if you walk outside from the Porte d'Orange,a lovely park along the river with a nice walking path beneath the trees, with lots of small foot bridges.
The highlight, is a synagogue dating back to 1367 which is a must see. lots of good eateries around.
