5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2011

One of the best hotels (aesthetically, location and service) I've ever stayed. Yes, expensive, but you get your money's worth. Incredible sea views from balcony on front-facing rooms. Room was huge, bed extremely comfortable, wonderful writing desk, rich, solid furniture. All the stately, sophisticated touches of those things that deepen your attraction to the French Riviera. Merci, Majestic Barriere!

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2011

We stayed at the Majestic Barriere a couple of weeks ago for a one week break and while by all accounts it is a very good hotel, it just lacked the "wow"-factor.
Part of it certainly can be attributed to the fact that Cannes in August is a very busy place and many of the problems are not specific to this hotel but are probably endemic to other hotels and restaurants in a holiday spot during the High Season.

I booked our 3 rooms (for nanny, 3 small children and ourselves) a couple of months ago (I was told that during that time a couple of special offers applied to our booking) and on arrival we were shown our rooms, 2 connecting rooms for nanny and children and a deluxe room with sea view for us. Whilst the superior rooms were nice, our sea view room was quite small and nothing special at all. The receptionist showing us the room suggested we should swap the rooms round with one of the rooms for the children, which of course was impractical.
Only later during the day/evening when unpacking we realized how impossible this room was for two people. We had to climb over the suitcases because there was no space, the bed was maximal queen size, the (unmodernised) bathroom was small even for one person.
I complained the next morning and staff at reception graciously moved us to a beautiful room (which also was a deluxe category) which with 46sqm was nearly double the size of the other room.
I could imagine that the other room will be offered again to the next couple arriving and it is just a matter of who doesn't complain doesn't deserve any better. I don't know whether it had anything to do with the special offers that we received, but then again, that was offered to me when booking 3 rooms, so one should not get inferior rooms.

We had stayed at the Majestic Barriere 3 years ago when it was just refurbished and absolutely beautiful and now, 3 years on, one could see already signs of wear and tear in the rooms which is probably to expect, but probably should also have been attended to.

Room Service was hit and miss in terms of quality of food. Breakfast in the restaurant was good, but somewhat chaotic.
The food in the beach bar, la Petite Maison and Fouquet was very good, however service was quite variable.
Coming back to the point I made earlier on in this review- the hotel was let down mainly by its service, and this is something we noticed also in other restaurants in Cannes (big exception-the restaurant le Mesclun in rue St. Antoine).
Across the board, staff appear harassed, rushed and busy, even though there are a lot around. Often they don't really take time to explain when ordering but then there are long pauses when waiting for the meals to arrive.

Housekeeping staff were all very friendly and obliging.
The swimming instructors at the hotel were lovely!

Otherwise, it appears- money counts -time is money and space is money.
You pay for loungers at the beach but also at the pool.

We had one other unhappy incident when our nanny at 9 am in the morning, when playing with the children at the beach was told in a very rude manner by a young beach attendant to hire a lounger for the day even though she was just there early in the morning with no other guests at the beach and was then ordered to leave the beach. He watched her drag the push chair up the stairs without helping her. My husband then talked to the beach boy who was also rude to him and he finally complained to the beach manager and then the hotel manager. Our nanny was sent a note of apology and a present by the manager, which was appreciated, but this incident should not have happened in the first place.
Staff need to be managed and this young beach boy should not have been placed in a position as receptionist at the beach and it requires more skills than just good looks to
deal with customers.
Summer is a busy period and most likely hotels and restaurants have to hire more seasonal staff for the summer and it is imperative that they are managed properly and especially trained properly, it often appears they are selected by looks and not by skills and that shows in their whole attitude to the job.
I only gave this hotel three stars for the experience I had made in terms of service. I am convinced (from what I heard), had I stayed in the Carlton or the Martinez, my ratings would not have been any different and there would have been similar problems. This just reflects a complacency in a lot of places in the Cote d'Azur in the summer because people come, whatever the service and experience.

The hotel has an excellent location. The renovated rooms and suites are of very high standard and have a nice ambiance. Breakfast is rich however the service in Fouquet area lacks the head waiter who will direct the rest of the staff. The petit mason restaurant food and service was a total disappointment.

Dear DivaAthens,

We appreciate your comments regarding your stay at the Majestic Barriere in Cannes. It is always a pleasure to receive positive feedback.
We are very pleased to read that you have enjoyed our hotel and the new rooms.
Your remarks concerning the breakfast in Fouquet’s have been well noted and will be passed to the maitre. Concerning our restaurant, La Petite Maison De Nicole, this is a very different concept, serving high standard Mediterranean cuisine in a very family style spirit. We are sorry that you did not enjoy the experience.

The hotel also has a more traditional French Brasserie, Le Fouquet's which I hope you did enjoy for lunch or dinner.

Thank you again for sharing your experience, look forward to serving you at the Majestic Barrière of Cannes.

Sincerely,
Emmanuel CAUX
General Manager.

Nice hotel with character. Good food, pleasant service.

The not good part is the regular: paid internet, no coffee maker in room.

But Cannes itself is very nice.

The majestic barriere is without a dought one of the 2 best hotels in Cannes, luxurious, elegant and clean.
But once you walk out and you go to the beach, you completely lose the feeling of being in a 5* hotel...
Disgusting bathrooms, and overpriced chairs!
I very often go to 5* hotels all over the world, and I have never been charged 38€ for a chair in the pool!
In overall, it's a beautiful hotel but it needs a urgent makeover in the beach
