Our French friends recommended that we stay at the Royal Westminster in the town of Menton on the Côte d'Azur . The hotel is run by Vacances Bleu a company that seems to cater for French retirees. The facade of the building is Belle Epoch and has retained this elegant beautiful style. It is one of the most beautiful buildings situated on the Esplanade overlooking the sea but set back in a simple but stylish garden that compliments the architecture of the building. Taking further advice from our friends we requested a room facing the sea toward the centre of the building on the fourth floor with a balcony..The view through the tall shuttered French windows was superb.
Sadly the interior of the building which has been modernized over the years has lost the palatial style it once had. The staff were polite and helpful but the level of service is three star. The French take demi and full pension packages which provides them with cheaper menu options for lunch and dinner. The continental breakfast is very good if you can get there on time.
The hotel is well situated close to the old town of Menton. It is possible to take a local bus for 1 euro to Monte Carlo and Nice but get on at the first stop in Menton as it is well used by the locals.
We felt a bit like fish out of water surrounded by very elderly retirees who must have been reassured by the defibrelator attached to the wall adjacent to the lift. On the other hand it was also reassuring for us to see them all enjoying life to the fullest.

Spent a week at the Royal Westminster with a party of 10 from Scotland.

The hotel lived up to our expectations - rooms cleaned whilst at breakfast; good food (which could be taken on the terrace); courteous staff.

The location was chose for its proximity to the town centre and for views overlooking the sea to Cap Martin and Ventimille - superb. Prices (for the med) were reasonable.

Hotel is well patronised. Prices vary according to season.

Cannot recommend the hotel (or Menton) highly enough.

Room Tip: Chose a sea view - costs a little more but what a vista!

Stayed for over a week recently. The location is perfect, the promenade and beach on one side, the town centre on the other. Easy to walk to shops, restaurants etc. Not too far to local buses and train station. Beautiful old building, now restored. Rooms are well appointed, clean and comfortable. Daily room service. Desk and bar staff are friendly, helpful and multilingual. Restaurant staff always appear to be in a hurry with no time to really serve guests. Food is of mixed quality. Breakfasts were good with plenty of choice, everything topped up regularly. Dinners very variable; sometimes good but some evenings either badly cooked or almost cold when served. House red wine is more like house red vinegar! And this is France! Plenty of local restaurants do better food at lower prices. Three star hotel trying hard to become two star.

Room Tip: Must get room on seaside. Rooms on town side are plagued by noise of traffic, neighbours and early morning deliveries to supermarket.

The hotel is beautiful and affortable , located right by the sea side near the centre, surrounded by fine restaurants and shops. We arrived late at night and were met by 2 very polite and friendly getelmen at the front desk, after our check-in we proceeded to a cozy spacious room with plasma Tv, large comfortable bed and a big clean bathroom. Very pleased and rested we went down for breakfast in the morning when our positive experience from previous night was completely ruined by rude breakfast staff, who arrogantly refused to bring us sandwich bread saying it was finished, rolling their eyes and actually telling my husband off until I threatened to speak to the manager. The whole morning turned into a high scale drama between me and the rude waitress leaving my husband and me with no appetite and a powerfully unpleasant impression.

The location of the hotel is excellent being opposite the sea and well located for the town. My cousin had booked our hotel room some 6 months ago through Trip Advisor at a quoted rate of 188 Euros per night inclusive of breakfast. When we arrived we noticed that the rate was 153 Euros but the hotel would not reduce the rate or even compromise which was very poor indeed particularly given that we had a similar scenario back in June in Marbella when the hotel staff were pleased to assist.

It would appear that the hotel is under new ownership however having challenged the manager on the rate shown on the website as opposed to what they were demanding he said that the website was not in use and they were trying to remove it which I thought not very professional.

The hotel looks very attractive from the outside but the inside is very outdated and needs to be refurbished. Our room was extremely basic and very small with limited faciities.

The breakfast was extremely basic and lacking in imagination in terms of offering. The food regularly ran out and was not restocked leaving one with a limited selection.

I would not be returning to the Royal Westminster.

Room Tip: If you are going to select this hotel choose a high level room with a sea view. Rooms on the lower floors are tiny!
