“Beautiful home from home in the old town”

Conveniently placed home from home in the old town Nice. Close proximity to the Promenade des Anglais,Cours Saleya , and all Nice's major attractions.
Take the number 100 bus to Monte Carlo for 1,5 euro, a beautiful coastal route. Perhaps get off at the beautiful Villefranche sur mer for a swim or spot of lunch.
The apartment itself was beautiful, everything you could wish for. A little noisy being in the old town. The sounds of the refuse collectors at 4am take some getting used to rattling around in their little trucks.

Well when we arrived at the Boucherie all was good.
At 04.00 - 05.00 in the mornings the dustman would collect the bottles from under the apartment and i guess they were not paid to be quiet. Awake most mornings listening to bottle smashing.
Then the last day we got locked out (even though the owners knew the front door lock was dodgy). All day we sat around waiting for a locksmith. They couldn't fix it so we were given 2 options by Nice Pebbles. Stay in the apartment over night with the sofa against the door and they would refund 1 nights rental (150 euro) or move to a hotel. We chose to stay more out of the inconvenience. Well we are still waiting for the 150 euros as promised by the owner. As you can guess we won't be staying with Nice Pebbles again.

We were surprised and disappointed to read the guests comments about their stay. Their version is not what we remember.

It took a while to place these guests and we had to look at our records. We have deducted this was for guests who stayed with us in August 2011. We have a locksmith bill for 257.00 to pay after their stay.

There was a clear note on the door to make sure that guests properly turned the key or it could get stuck. This had happened twice previously to the owners when they lived in the apartment in 2005 – the lock was not “dodgy”. This instruction had been followed by the guests for 3 years quite successfully. Sadly, these guests got locked out at the weekend. We immediately did all we could to try to get them back in but trying to set an emergency locksmith in the South of France in the month of August is not an easy task. Most local tradesmen go away for this whole month and in France is it illegal to deny holidays to workers for the month of August.

The guests were told to enjoy their day as best they could and it was the Pebbles team who waited around all day for the tradesmen. When the locksmith arrived the door could not be fixed. We were told by the locksmith that this was due to the pushing kicking and shoving that had been caused to it, otherwise he could have fixed it immediately. We chose to not mention this to the guests as it would cause ill-feeling and they were already upset with the inconvenience.

The locksmith had to get a part for the lock which he said he could not buy that day. Therefore the door would remain unlocked overnight. The guests were told we could send them to a hotel for their last night, or they could choose to stay but put the sofa behind the door. They were also told (and did) that they should go out for dinner on us and that our team would “babysit” the apartment to make sure their items were safe. We did this until they returned at 11pm.

The noise of the bin men in the morning is one that has gone on for generations and lasts for a few minutes. It is a small problem in almost all Old Town apartments, but as “Boucherie” is tucked off the main streets its often viewed as quieter than others because there is no passer-by noise that can continue into the night and early morning in this area of town. The Mayor is looking into solutions for the Old Town noise and there are plans to move the bin stores (which are placed every three streets so heard in most apartments). Guests who wish to avoid the noise factor of the Old Town need to choose an apartment outside of the Old Town. Guests who can accept this nuisance will have the advantage of being in one of the most vibrant and enchanting areas of the City.

Our records show that the refund was given to the guests in cash to pay for dinner that night. If we are wrong on this then we apologise but this has never been queried with us. If an email had been sent it would have been looked into at the time.

We are disappointed that the guests who got locked out (arguably through their own doing) and then had immediate assistance throughout the day, were offered alternatives for the situation outside of our control and not charged for the damage they arguably caused feel that we offered poor service. We remain confident that we did all we could to help.
