“Superb experience of L'Univers de Christian Plumail”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 March 2014

This was a special occasion to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it did not disappoint. It was very full on the Saturday evening, but the staff were all very professional and friendly. The set menu had a small choice, but we thoroughly enjoyed all the dishes we were given, especially the desserts. The whole evening was a great experience and I would definitely recommend booking a table for a special evening out.

“Bland and tasteless”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 February 2014

We booked this restaurant for the New Year’s Eve celebration and expected to experience fine dining for 160EUR per person without drinks. We had a short list of restaurants and eventually chose L'Univers because it offered the most interesting menu for New Year's Eve. Instead, we were served the most boring and tasteless food by semi competent staff devoid of any personality.

The restaurant dining room is simple but smart, perhaps slightly clinical. The restaurant was flexible in making adjustments to the set menu to meet a couple of small dietary requirements. It was interesting that there was no obvious sommelier and when we had chosen our wine the waitress had to borrow a cork screw from another member of staff. The quality of the ingredients could not be faulted but the meal was just not inspiring and lacked any wow factor you would expect from a restaurant with a Michelin star and for the price paid (even making allowance for expected inflated prices for this holiday). For example, the lamb looked messy on the plate, it was supposed to be done in various ways but tasted like cardboard. I couldn’t eat it. The chocolate dessert tasted offensive and had a texture of wet sand. I couldn’t eat that either.

May be it's because we come from London where the standard of food and dining is very high. Or perhaps the Michelin standard in France is slightly lower than elsewhere in the world; I have read that there are many more Michelin starred restaurants in France than any other country.

The chef came around to introduce himself which was very brave considering he had just produced such a mediocre food. We would suggest that he should invest the money he so undeservedly earned on the night in a few corkscrews, hiring a Michelin star chef, or enrolling in a cooking class, because that was not a Michelin star dining experience. The couple sat next to us left the restaurant early, without finishing their meal and leaving half a bottle of rather expensive wine without drinking it. How embarrassing is that?

Overall our food experience in Nice was not good and we generally had only average or poor quality food even though we tried to pick restaurants carefully.

Another aspect about the New Year experience is that the meal felt slightly rushed; my previous experience is that such a meal is leisurely and expected to last at least until midnight. It was clear that the restaurant wanted everyone gone before midnight... And we were. A disappointing experience.

“Pleased to get a table on St Valentine's”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2014

I hadn’t thought about special menus for St Valentine’s when I booked a weekend in Nice. That of Christian Plumail appealed & was less expensive than some & I was lucky to book a table. I wanted to try Michelin-starred dining in France & was not disappointed. Despite a full house, although admittedly for a single set menu, both kitchen & serving staff coped effortlessly. Each course came without a long wait but not too quickly. The food was perfectly cooked & presented & we had an excellent evening. The food was complemented by a good wine list & I was happy with my choice of a modestly-priced local wine. I will be happy to return to taste one of the regular menus on another visit.

“Drop in standards”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2014 via mobile

We have loved our previous two visits here for Christmas. A priority to book again. But this time we were put at a small table at the front of the restaurant and frequently ignored for service. The biggest mistake we made was for dessert - one chose cheese only, one a dessert, but no sign of the requested soufflé - because the cheese had not been finished. No explanation or waiter. The lack of ability to serve your own wine then began to annoy. And why start with an amuse bouche which was a huge piece of pigeon liver. Too much protein throughout, not enough balance. What a shame. We won't return.

“Why a Michelin star?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 February 2014

The service and ambience was okay, but not up to the standard of a Michelin Star. The food was way below what you would expect from a restaurant with such a reputation. Maybe we caught them on a bad day, but from the starters, to the appetizers to over cooked lamb chops, the dinner just turned into a "what is Michelin thinking?" discussion. So please Mr. Michelin, send your men back to revaluate Mr. Christian Plumails restaurant. Thank you and "bon appetite"
