We are just back from spending three nights in this hotel where we booked two rooms with no breakfast included. We paid 1900 Euros and were very disappointed in a number of aspects.

No added five star extras - useless hair dryer, no shower cap, one socket which was difficult to access, no conditioner, no tea making facilities,
No facilities to change when checking out. Had to change in toilets. All four of us!
No pool and rip off prices for beach with extra for towel
No trouser press or iron
No ice and one miserable free bottle of water
We were not made welcome after we checked out. Obviously staff are aware it is a one time hotel ie; guests only book one time as they won't usually book a second.

None of the grand people from the wall paintings would have put up with this lack of trimmings.
Hotel is obviously living on a reputation from bye gone days.
I have now read through the reviews and am shocked by the replies from management. Start taking some of this criticism to heart as the hotel is over priced and guests are not welcome.

The location is good but I will not stay here on my next visit to Nice.

Dear Derrymum168,

Thank you for the feedback and constructive comments on the need for us to do better. There is no doubt that the team could have handled the situation better. We have reviewed the standards with our team to ensure that such experiences do not reoccur. A seamless experience at check in is essential and we will ensure to get it right.

We wish to give some explanations to some of your remarks :

"no shower cap...no conditioner" : these are available upon request through our housekeeping service and is part of our ecological engagement. The Negresco Hotel is the first five stars Hotel of the French Riviera to receive the certification Ecolabel, making it a pioneer in the field of socially responsible hospitality. This sense of responsability is given to its teams and guests with regard to the ecological stakes. The personnel have been trained to reduce consumption of energy and chemical substances and guests are invited to sort their waste with the provision of selective sorting bins and also by choosing to change their sheet less regurlarly during long stays.

"no tea making facilities...no trouser press or iron...no pool" : the hotel services and facilities are all clearly stated on our proper website, all Internet reservation partner sites and in the room directory located in every accomodation.

"no facilities to change when checking out".We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. During high season the hotel is often fully booked and the front desk is always pleased to give a free room after check out time in order to change according to availability.

I do hope you will come back and give us the opportunity to make it up to you on the next visit to the Negresco Hotel. Our commitment to exceptional service has not changed and we strive to do better each time

Yours faithfully,

Pierre Bord

Great service, and nice rooms. It was centrally located and in front of the Promenade des Anglais (a beach walk). It was also close to shops and Old City. More impressive was the artwork located through the hotel including lobby, bars and every floor. The quality, the variety and the way they were shown was impressive.

This hotel is certainly not 5 star and seriously over rated
The rooms are dated. Bathroom and toilet behind the times a shower hose fixed to a wallto act as shower
No coffee facility's in the room
€12 for a coffee for room service
€15 for a glass of house wine
The private beach you pay for at €20 per person per day
No pool no spa.
All the little things do not exist
Many better 4star hotels in nice that definitely out do this one
If you are looking to have a good time in nice start by selecting elsewhere

Have you ever wished that you could stay at your favourite art gallery? Then this is the hotel for you. Le Negresco is a Nice icon, truly the most unique hotel i have every stayed in. Every part of the hotel, on every floor is covered in works of art; paintings, sculptures, mixed media, you name it, its there, in all shapes and sizes, periods and styles. In the past the hotel itself was considered a tourist attraction however i don't believe you can now view without being a patron
Aside from the glorious (and some downright crazy) works of art are other quirks such as the medieval guards uniforms for the staff, the lift and make sure you do not miss seeing the rest rooms next to the shop...
Now for the substance behind this hotel. The staff at reception were attentive although quite busy. Checkin and checkout was smooth and while i was declined the ask of a slightly later checkout for my pregnant wife i know these things cant always be accommodated.
The rooms. These are quite dated. The carpet needs replacing and the bathrooms could do with modernising. The walls are not sound proofed as this is an old building and one night our neighbours were making a lot of noise at 2am. To the hotels credit when i called up reception and complained they called the other room straight away and resolved. But the whole point of our room was the view to the sea. This made every small complaint on decor and noise irrelevant. If you are staying here in the first place i can assume you are not taking a budget holiday so pls spend that little bit extra and ****** get and OCEAN VIEW *****
The other facilities we used very quite standard for a 4/5 star hotel. The bar had good selections of cocktails and the setting was a magnificent room with, yes you guessed it, lots of artwork. We didnt visit the 2 michelin star restaurant so cannot comment there. The less formal restaurant we had breakfast in once, i must say was a little disappointing. Very slow service and overpriced, poor quality eggs with toast. We popped back in there for a drink and ice cream dessert one afternoon and service was better but still i would say this restaurant isnt the hotels strong point
All in all, if you love modern luxury chain hotels then dont stay here. If you want a quirk, unique experience with lovely location and sea views and want to treat yourself then this is for you

Room Tip: Ocean View...that is all!.

I booked this hotel for the end of my French Riviera birthday vacation after staying at two other 5 star hotels in Monte Carlo & Cannes based mostly on the location but also because of its historical reputation. We'll, this one is for the history books, literally. Our suite, while it has beautiful views, must have been decorated when the hotel was built. Awful. I can't even describe it other than to say no one living in this century would find it aesthetically appealing or comfortable. Terrible worn carpet (gold) obnoxious pink wallpaper, green velvet couch, red headboard & gold (yes gold) bathtub. I thought for a moment I was in a bad hotel in Las Vegas. Service has been average. The concierge gave us directions to Old Town but no specific recommendations for where to go. By the time we wandered back (places had stopped serving at 10 I guess, it was 10:15), he couldn't tell me if the hotel was serving food still and sent me to find out on my own. Room service which ended up being our option was terrible. To top it off, there was a spider hanging from the light in the elevator. I read some other reviews commenting on similar concerns and should of known better. I'm sorry we prepaid and are stuck for 2 nights here when we had amazing stays at other hotels in the area. Take my advice, vintage is only good in clothes designers & automobiles. Stay somewhere newer or somewhere renovated.

Dear KrisM0620,

Thank you for taking the time to provide comments from your stay at the Negresco Hotel. We truly appreciate your feedback and the opportunity for us to improve our service. We are constantly working to ensure each guest has a memorable experience and your feedback will help us with this process. We are concerned by the service provided by our concierge and will take appropriate actions with our head concierge.

The comments about the decoration of the suite you occupied are very personal and may vary depending on taste and sensitivity. Indeed, other commendations on Tripadvisor are describing a completely different opinion on this particular feature. For instance the next comment after yours on Tripadvisor says : "Our room had many original decor touches, such as gold sinks and a gold bathtub (really!), a canopied bed, and original artwork, including sculpture...If you expect modern perfection, this may not be the hotel for you. If you appreciate luxury and an historic pedigree with a dash of quirk thrown in, welcome to Le Negresco".

We are sorry that your experience was not as positive as others on this site and would ask you to please accept our sincere apologies for this.

Yours sincerely,

We stayed here for only one night, but wished for a longer stay. The hotel is superbly located, on the Promenade des Anglias, right across from the beach. We loved the combination of classic Belle Epoque exterior, and offbeat but over-the-top interiors. We were fortunate enough to be given an upgrade to a Deluxe Sea View room, with a small balcony from which to watch the activity along the Mediterranean. The view from our room when the lights in the palm trees twinkle at night along the Promenade was spectacular. Our room had many original decor touches, such as gold sinks and a gold bathtub (really!), a canopied bed, and original artwork, including sculpture. We found the front desk staff very welcoming, the baggage staff friendly and helpful, and the concierge very kind. The bar is classically designed, and very beautiful, with dark wood and sparkling chandeliers. If you expect modern perfection, this may not be the hotel for you. If you appreciate luxury and an historic pedigree with a dash of quirk thrown in, welcome to Le Negresco.

Room Tip: Splurge for a Sea View to take in the beautiful Mediterranean.
