There were a dozen of us staying at the Ellington, and no-one had complaints. I had a deluxe room, in which the bed was extremely comfortable and noise was not a problem. Plumbing was fine with good bath/shower and plenty of hot water. Some rooms are around a central courtyard which I imagine could be noisy if a group like ours was sitting out late. Reception staff were helpful, although our bags were dropped off in the morning and we were told they would be moved into a secure area but they were still there when we returned after four hours - fortunately without any problems.
Location was excellent for walking to the old town for eating out or to the station for trips to Monaco or Cannes. Neither was particularly near, but the location was central and everything could be walked within 15 mins.
An arrangement is in place with a private beach, which is around 10 mins walk away, but be warned you still have to pay for loungers etc.
Breakfast was well presented with Cereals, Fruits, breads, cheese, meats, croissants, pain au chocolate etc etc. The hot breakfast was not voted as the best, but perhaps the French don't feel a Full English is their forte. There was scrambled egg and bacon etc. available.
Bar had happy hour 6-8pm with reasonable prices. Courtyard was very pleasant to sit out in to enjoy your drink, with comfortable chairs.
All in all a very good hotel for a city break in Nice.

Room Tip: Deluxe room in the main hotel,

This hotel is located in an excellent position in between both the train station and the old town and is in a good location for sightseeing locally or for getting the train to Monaco. The hotel could not be faulted -very friendly and helpful receptionists. The deluxe room we stayed in was excellent -no outside noise and even had a small balcony; the shower was first class. The breakfast facilities were excellent -the dining room was never overcrowded despite this concern being raised in other reports. I have stayed in may hotels through business and leisure breaks and I can certainly say that this was one of the finest.

Room Tip: go for the deluxe room at least

Really well situated for the main shopping areas, eg rue Jean Medecin, and Nice Etoile. Only a 5-10 minutes walk from the Old Town and the sea. Similarly, easy to reach the bus for the return to the airport, a good deal at 4 euros pp. We went in mid-April when the weather was just warming up, so it wasn't too crowded, but very pleasant. Room wasn't that big, but very clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were fine, certainly enough to start the day with. We found the staff to be very helpful and friendly, only too pleased to help with directions etc. We'd certainly go back there without hesitation. It was a great base for exploring the area. Not too far from anywhere, including the Gare SNCF for any visits a little further away such as Monaco or Cannes etc. No problems!

Room Tip: No sea views, but some nice views over rooftops.

We booked a package break to Nice with Expedia and decided to stay at the Ellington. Its location is excellent, very close to the main shopping street, train station, old town etc.

The staff were friendly and helped us out with a few queries.

The buffet breakfast was good, we particularly enjoyed the pain au chocolat! We resided in the small bar a few times during our trip, the drinks were not that expensive in comparison to the prices in town, and were even better value during the happy hour.

On the negative side, our deluxe double room was clean but very small - not luxurious in the slightest! Shower was adequate. The room was extremely hot and because of the time of our visit the air con had not been switched on so we had to sleep with the balcony door open. Gym facilities were basic.

During our travels we passed a few other 4* hotels which seemed much more luxurious and in hindsight better value for money (particularly the Exedra).

Dear Traveller Scot,

We thank you for submiting your view, it's always important for us to have some feedback.
Concerning the air conditionning, we have a centrally system which is programmed for the heat and for the A/C. Till now as the weather was still changing, warm during the day and fresh in the evening most of the clients were complaining and requested the heat.
Regarding the room, we do have a good value for the money, the rooms are comfortable and clean. Hope you still enjoyed your stay and will see you for your next stay at Nice.

We were put in this hotel via Page and Moy - and obviously I checked it out with Trip Advisor before we went! It is far better than some of the reviews stated. The rooms are very clean, the beds are supremely comfortable. The area is quiet as is the hotel generally. It is decorated to depict faded charm of the 'Jazz - Duke Ellington' era - but it is not in need of decoration, far from it! It is really convenient as it is an easy walk from the old town, the flower market, the more modern shops and the beaches. The staff are very helpful - most speak excellent English. The breakfast was stunning - every morning! The one criticism I would agree with is that if everyone descends on the breakfast room at the same time - there is not enough seating - but there is not in many hotels - so we were prepared we either went early or late - and never had a problem!

If you are going to France - I certainly want to stay in a French hotel and not some international chain - this gives you that opportunity! If I was going to Nice again independently I would book this hotel for myself! Enjoy and ignore the nit pickers!

It's very important for us that all our guests fully enjoy their stay at our hotel.
We strive to provide a superior service experience for every guest.
We have well noted your disappointed experience during the breakfast time, even if our breakfast room has a large capacity, when our hotel is fully booked it might be a bite busy.
We are looking forward to welcome you back at the Ellington Hotel**** for another stay on the sunny French Riviera.

Yours sincerely

Excellent staff, great breakfast selection, bedrooms can be a bit noisy as people come and go!!. We stayed the first weekend of the Carnival (Feb 2011) which is truly an event to be seen. Easy to get around on local bus transport to surrounding areas including Monaco and Monte Carlo (1 euro).

Dear Myndor,

Thank you for your great comment regarding your stay at the Ellington Hotel****.
It's always a real pleasure to read the lovely experience that our guests had during their stay at our hotel.
Your comments are very important for us so we can improve our hotel services.
Unfortunately as our hotel was fully booked, a lot of groups departed early in the morning which certainly has caused some noise.
We are looking forward to welcome you back at the Ellington Hotel**** for another stay.

Best regards,
The Manager

hotel was in the center which was a good asset, but since the building is small, we had to wait for elevators for a long time and the breakfast room was so small, one morning we couldn't even sit at the same table:(
aside from these negative things, the staff was very helpfuli gentle and kind.the rooms were nice, clean and comfortable.
