“Lovely hotel, poor breakfast”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 September 2012

The hotel was clean and our room was a good size, the staff were very helpful and the location is great. The only downside was breakfast - they cater too much for coach parties and no mater what time we went down for breakfast it was over run with old American people who completely cleared out the buffet. There were no tables, cups, plates or cutlery. I would recommend staying room only and having breakfast in a cafe nearby. We would probably not return to this hotel because of the breakfast farce and the frustration it caused. One Nice tip - do the Nice Cyle Tour, Thelma is great and you learn a lot about the history and where to eat. It was well worth every penny.

Hotel rooms in Nice are incredibly expensive. This one will provide a break to your budget and if that is what you are looking for, then stay here. The room is basic but adequate and the AC is incredibly limited in strength. You won't want to spend a lot of time here, but if your idea is a place to sleep while you visit the beach, this might be for you.

There were a lot of tour groups, it's true. My experience with the staff was very good. The hotel is within easy walking distance to the shopping district and old town. Parking is very challenging if you've got a car with you.

The hotel was definitely not worth $200+ a night. It was supposed to be our "nicest" hotel of a 2 week trip and ended up being the one we liked the least.

Pros: location, fancy bar with a happy hour 6-8pm
Cons: service (had to call 3 times for more toilet paper), overpriced, breakfast was not included (18€ a day per person), no free wifi in the room

Id recommend staying elsewhere.

Hotel Ellington is located in a reasonably good area of Nice, a short walk to shopping and restaurants, about 10 mins walk from the beachfront and 15 mins to the train station in the opposite direction with good connections to neighboring areas (Cannes, Monaco etc). Taxi from the airport was 40 euros at night, more likely to be 30 euros during the day - do your wallet a favour and take a bus. The hotel itself was nice enough - as is the case with many French hotels (unless they are ultra modern and chic), it's decor could do with a bit of an update. The rooms themselves were of a good size and beds were comfortable. Our room (502) fronted onto the street, which was not really an issue until our second evening when night roadworks commenced outside the hotel and were very audible in the room.
Bathroom was a good size, again a bit dated but clean. Unfortunately, despite reporting our broken hairdryer to reception staff it went unfixed - so we simply made do without. Staff were all very friendly and professional though we didn't spend much time in the hotel or have much reason to talk with them. The 9am knock on the door from housekeeping was a bit of a surprise, as was the 10am knock that followed soon after - they must realise that some holiday makers like to sleep in! The lack of free wifi in the rooms was a bit of a joke - free wifi available in the lobby and bar area but 15 euros per 24hr period in the rooms - ridiculous! If you want to use the in-room safe, you'll need to pay for that also. While we enjoyed our stay in Nice, this well located hotel was really just 'OK' and probably could offer better than what it does for the price.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was nothing short of amazing. The room was OK but who spends a lot of time in there, it was clean, comfortable and quiet with everything at hand. Very close proximity to everything, beach was five min walk, main shopping area two mins and the station about ten mins. Would stay here again.
