We stayed in the Ibis Budget Nice Californie for 2 nights in early October 2013. Having stayed in many Ibis Budgets over the course of our trip around Europe it has become apparent that they aren't all the same. Some have friendly, cheerful staff and the building itself appears to be fairly new, fresh and well maintained. A case in point being the Ibis Budget in Krakow. The other end of the spectrum is this Ibis in Nice. On the positive site the staff were fine, the breakfast was good and we could see the sea from our window. The location was also OK with a 20-30 minute stroll along the promenade to the town centre being a pleasant way to start the day.
The reason for only giving this Ibis an Average score is that the building itself needs a bit of TLC. It's not nice sitting down to breakfast and seeing stained and broken ceiling tiles in the cafeteria area. The room was also dated compared to other Ibis Budgets we've stayed in.
Plus it would have been nice if the Accor group could strike a deal with Vinci facilities company (who manage the Car Park across the street) to get a reduced rate for people staying in the Ibis. We paid 25 euro per day to park which is a lot compared to 4 Euros in Lyon and 14 in Dresden. In Dresden we parked in the Altmarkt car park which wasn't Accor owned but they had obviously negotiated a preferential rate for Accor customers.
If returning to Nice I wouldn't rule out staying at this Ibis but I would look around to see what other options there were, especially if driving.
