“definitely recommend and stay again”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2012

My partner and I are just back from a weekend in Nice at the Hotel Victor Hugo and have to agree with all of the positive reviews here. Giles, and his wonderful rescued dog made us feel extremely welcome. Very relaxing break, lovely room and great location. Thanks!

This small hotel is about 15 stroll to the Old Town (a pleasant walk along the promenade). The rooms are reasonably sized and very well equipped with tv, fridge, microwave and complimentary toiletries.

The reception is manned until about 20:00 each day, and the owner is friendly and knowledgable, and the hotel dog greeted us enthusiastically like long lost friends during the day.

The only downside was a slightly strange smell in the bathroom, but it wasn't strong enough to bother us particularly.

I would thoroughly recommend this hotel, and fully intend to use it again if I return to Nice.

We stayed in Orientales room.

+:
The room very nice; bathroom is small and basic but has all you need incl hairdryer
Everything spotlessly clean
Free wifi
Great breakfast: choice is enough and more importantly of high quality. Quality of bread, pastry, cheese, jam, Nespresso - all indicate the host is not saving on little details which in the end of the day create the impression.
Most friendly and helpful host

-:
no soundproof: street noise is quite loud in the morning, as well as other sounds. But the place is little and in a quiet location, so not too much of trouble

We spend a weekend in Nice in Victor Hugo hotel. It is in a good location, close to promenade and center. The design is simple, but nice with all you need. Breakfast were great, and offered all you need to start a good day, with excellent pastries and bread. The owner is there to help with any request and question you may have which makes the stay comfortable and you feel welcome. However the hotel is on the first floor (6 rooms in total) so it is a little noisy. Besides that, it is just great.

My family and I stayed three nights at the Victor Hugo and we were really pleased with the experience. The hotel has a great location, the rooms are very modern, and the daily rate was very moderate considering you're almost downtown in Nice.

Likes:
- The owner, Gil, is a really nice guy that tries to do all he can to make sure that your experience in the hotel and Nice in general really goes well. When we first got to the hotel, he sat me down with a map and gave me great tips of places to go and restaurants to eat, all of which were as advertised.
- The location of this hotel is great, just three blocks from the Promenade Des Anglais and an additional block further on from the Hotel Negresco. It normally took us around 15-20 minutes walking at a leisurely pace to get to Old Nice and Massena Square.
- We stayed at in the Jean Cocteau suite and were very happy with it. The suite overlooks the garden which made it very quiet at night and really allowed us to get refreshing nights' sleep. The bathroom, though very small, is updated and worked well for us. The suite also has an additional room with a small kitchen, tables and chairs, and futon. This worked great for us because we were able to put both our children in there at night with no issue.
- Unlike all BBs we've stayed at before, this one provided a full continental breakfast in the morning, which is nothing to be sneezed at. All the of the pastries and fruits were fresh as Gil picked them up in the mornings just before breakfast started. The BB's WiFi also worked great for us during our stay there and we made full use of it during our stay.

Caveats:
There's really nothing about the Victor Hugo that we disliked but there are a couple of caveats that people should be aware of. First, the parking situation around the hotel, and Nice in general, is dire unless you choose to go to an expensive lot (about 22 Euros a day). I chose this hotel partly because a previous reviewer said that free parking was plentiful around the hotel. That's not altogether true...there is free parking all around the hotel, but it's never unoccupied and we were there in low season. That leaves using the 2 hour parking spaces around the hotel (also rarely empty), taking your chances with the traffic police, or using the expensive lot. We kind of got over on the system because we were there over a weekend (Sundays; parking is free), found a couple of spaces right next to the hotel at night (Parking is free from 2000-0900 daily), and made day trips outside of Nice. Second, the building where the BB is located occasionally has some issue with what we believed was sewage back-up. The reason we say this is because at times, when we flushed the toilet in our room or used the faucet, a nasty smell could be noticed. You could occasionally notice it as well when you went into the building from the outside as well. Nothing major but it was certainly there.

We had never stayed at a B&B before but after having read the reviews of Victor Hugo I decided to take the risk. I highly agree with all of the previous reviews. It honestly felt like we were staying in the guest room of a friend or family member. Bug thumbs up. The only down side is the very small bathroom however by no means the worst bathroom we have had this trip

From the moment we arrived the owner went out of his way to be helpful, giving us what turned out to be great tips on where to go and where to eat. The room was big and clean and very comfortable, the small kitchenette was a bonus. The location is about 5 minutes walk from the sea and 10 from nice old town. We will definately be coming back to Nice and will definately stay here again, the owner was fantastic and made it a great holiday
