“A lovely oasis in a busy beautiful City”
Reviewed 27 August 2011

We have just returned from a fantastic 13 day stay at the Windsor Hotel Nice. We found the staff very polite and friendly. We had an intimity room decorated by the artist Ben. This took a bit of getting used to, but he has some paintings at the Picasso museum in Antibes. The room was small but fine and had a balcony albeit facing the road. The double glazing cut out all noise and air con was superb. Nice and airy public ways.
I am surprised about previous remarks regarding the pool being cold and dirty, it was neither of these, just a few leaves from the beautiful trees and shrubs from the garden. This pool is not heated, but it did not need to be as the average air temperature did not go down below 25 degrees, so you would have to be a real wimp to complain about the coldness. My husband and I swam most days, so did a lot of other guests. We did not have the breakfast but wish we had as it looked absolutely lovely and was only about 4 euros more than your local cafe, but you got far more variety. Previous comments state the hotel was expensive, Nice itself is very expensive and I couldn't find any 3 star hotels with a pool cheaper. There are some lovely restaurants in the Old Town which is a 10 minute walk away. The beach and Promenade Des Anglais is only 5 minutes walk away. Would also recommend the Boulangerie on the corner of Rue Dalpozzo, excellent. Will definitely come back to this hotel, loved it.

Location is not close to the beach, but in a walking distance. But the beauty of this hotel is the (tropical) garden annex swimming pool. It is very uncommon to find a hotel in city center with a beautiful garden for some peace and relaxation to take away the summer heat in the city.
The hotel is also an "art" hotel. So, the rooms are unique and you may anticipate some art-work in your room, or in our case the room itself was an art-work. The positive side is that it is very special if you like it. If not, it will put you off. Also a bit disappointing is the fact that for the sake of art, some basic standards are sometimes banned, such as an easy chair and a table.
We appreciate the morning breakfast in the garden, just one word: super.
In general, we were very happy to stay at Hotel Windsor.

I will start of by saying that I booked this hotel primarily because of the pool. however, in my opinion it was far too cold to swim in and very small. If you are thinking of booking here because you want access to a pool I would advise you to look somewhere else.

Pool aside, the atmosphere in the garden was great, the perfect place to start the day with a coffee.

I stayed in one of the smaller bedrooms and it was clean, contemporary and comfortable. The air con was fantastic and the art in each of the rooms was a nice touch. The hotel is central - only a five minute walk from the beach.

The hotel was good but I would not stay here again. I personally think that £120 a night is too much for a small room, without breakfast in a hotel where the pool did not live up to expectations.

We booked one of the art rooms - the infinity room, we were given another far inferior room which we were moved from when we asked but were never given the room we originally booked. The cost of breakfast was very expensive for what it was and even more so for us as they made a mistake on our bill and charged us for 22 when we only had 2 - an overcharge of 240 pounds! They did refund this when pointed out though. The staff were variable, some friendly others not. The garden with pool looked nice, but we did not swim in the pool as it did not look clean, in fact I did not see anyone else use it either, probably for the same reason. The location is good about 10 minutes from the railway station and the sea front.

Room Tip: Do not be afraid to complain if you do get an inferior quality room - they will move you.

Dear Guest,

The infinity room doesn't exist in our hotel. So, I think that there was a confusion with "intimité" category which means "intimacy" in Englich, the cheapest category. Our large rooms are Seduction and Privilege. This probably explains your desapointment.

The swimming pool is cleaned every day but with all the trees in the garden, there are always leaves when it is windy. I can understand that you may feel unconfortable with these leaves in the swimming pool but we cannot do anything except cutting trees...

Concerning the cost of breakfast, you can have a real meal with eggs, bacon, ham, vegetables... as much as you want for 12€. If you just want a coffee and croissant, we have an express formula at 6€, I don't think you can have a better deal in a garden as we have.

So, if you come again in Nice, don't hesitate to ask for a Privilege room, I'm sure you will be happy with it, even if it is more expensive.

Best regards,

This was our second stay at the Windsor. April 2009 as a couple and now with 3friends in July 2011. Hotel is only three blocks from the promenade Anglais with it's beachfront very expensive hotels. Two blocks to the Rue de France pedestrian walking (and shopping) zone which you can stroll along all the way to Vieu Ville with numerous cafes and restaurants. Windsor is quite modern with each room having different unique decor. We went this time for a Seduction room @ €165 (135 low season) . Very spacious clean modern with windows/balcony overlooking the garden/pool. Lobby is decorated by a different artist each year. free wi-fi although it is a work in progress. Restaurant is good with wonderful setting
but Nice is too exciting to eat only at hotel. Waitstaff are excellent - students from other countries eager to please - Bernardo (Spain) + Katrina (Austria) were special. Desk staff and waitstaff all speak English and extremely helpful.

Room Tip: The privilege and seduction rooms - €185 and 165 are best as they face the garden not the street. Ro...

..just that, really. Not cheap - but, then, nowhere on the French Riviera is. But well-priced by comparison with its competition, quirky in a nice way, with rooms that are obviously never less than adequate (ours was by no means the best, but was still just fine), and a lovely garden/pool at the back which is a real oasis from the heat of the town outside. The service is also excellent. If you need a pleasant but affordable hotel right in the middle of all the action near the seafront in Nice, this is an excellent bet!

Room Tip: with a balcony overlooking the garden

We stayed 1 night at the Windsor at the start of a 2 week trip and the Windsor was a great place to start our trip. The pros: the hotel has some personality so you definitely don't feel you are at a big chain, the atmosphere was very laid back, the pool was great for relaxing, breakfast was good, the rooms were large and airy (we had balcony rooms). We paid the extra €12 for off street parking (you have to reserve in advance) which was secure and easier for us being unfamiliar with Nice. I can't think of many cons -- Nice is an expensive city for hotels but relative to that the Windsor is a good choice. FYI - the (pebbly) beach is about 10 min walk away - you can go to the free public beach or pay for the private beach with lounge chairs/umbrellas etc. The hotel front desk had discount vouchers for the private beach. Net is, if we go back to Nice someday I would look forward to staying at the Windsor again.
