Arrived 10.30 am and knew check in wasn't until 2pm, but wanted to leave luggage before going sightseeing. The male receiptionist "welcomed" us by saying: You are too early ! and not being friendly or helpful at all.
Came back late afternoon and asked for and got a smoking room on the 3rd floor.
Room size normal french standard, which means not very big. No refrigerator or minibar.
Aircon only possible on or off, no temperatur adjustment. If window open, loud noise from construction work and trams. Ok when closed.
Room and bathroom nicely cleaned.
10 mins walk max, to the beach and many different restaurants/cafe's.
Had prepaid for breakfastbuffet. Don't do that. Probably the most boring buffet I have seen.
2 out of 5 mornings there were no more bread at 10, even though breakfast was to 10.30, so we had to convince the maid to get some more from a nearby supermarket. She only spoke french and was not very helpful.
Best part of the stay was the female receiptionist, who was very friendly and helpful.
We would not stay there again.

We have just stayed in this hotel for 5 nights and found that the central location was ideal for access to trams and to the station. The front desk staff were very helpful and It was only a short walk to the old town and the beach. The room was comfortable but it was impossible to read in bed as the bedside lights were more akin to night lights while 3 downlighters were placed to illuminate the opposite wall. Also air conditioning would have been desirable as we were fortunate to have some hot weather which resulted in the room being very warm, Keeping the windows open was not an option as there was a lot of early morning noise from work being done on the nearby Basilica.

So circumstances stranded me in Nice an extra unexpected day. There are worse places to be stuck but I feared that my budget would be bust, having exhausted my business package deal with Club Med and checked out of my room at the Hotel Star. Faced with no obvious options. So I began shopping door-to-door for a room on Jean Medicin. After three places that were out of my budget, I happened on the Best Western New York. Obviously American-friendly, they quoted me a no-nonsense off-season budget price of €60--the most off the rack rate of anywhere. While it was €15 more than the Star, it was definitely worth the higher price. The rooms cleaner and more spacious, and it was more convenient without being that much noisier. Not sure if I could count on it, but I guess the main lesson here is when you are on the Riviera in the off-season, don't be afraid to bargain, even if your French is not so good. If you get quoted too high a rent, don't be afraid to vote with your feet.
