A great short break at La Perouse. Staff helpful and friendly. Hotel full of character and very quirky - roof terrace fantastic with wonderful views over the bay. Hotel perfectly positioned for the sea, marina and old town. Breakfast selection was also very good.

Having spent quite a while researching Nice hotels, we finally plumped for La Perouse. The price was well in excess of what we had hoped to pay, but we were swayed by its location, character and history. Also we particularly wanted a swimming pool where we could chill out after days touring the other towns and sights. And we were not disappointed! Ok it does not have a large reception area, but we had no intention of spending any of our valuable time there. Our sea-view room, on the third floor, overlooked the pool and courtyard restaurant, as well as having fabulous views over the entire promenade and bay from our balcony. The room was not huge, but it was as big as what we are used to, and beautifully decorated, obviously better then some of the non-seaview rooms, according to some of the other reviews. As is obvious from the web pictures, it is a stunningly beautiful-looking provencal style hotel. The courtyard restaurant and adjoining pool area are very tastefully designed. We ate in the restaurant on one night and the food was excellent, as good as any of the meals which we had in some of the most expensive Nice restaurants. We would have eaten there again but we wanted to sample as many as possible of the other eateries, which had been recommended by Tripadvisor members. If there was a downside, it was that there wasn't a bar where you could have a nightcap, but the option was there to sit on our balcony with mini-bar tipples, savouring the magnificent views on glorious balmy nights. The staff are friendly, courteous and efficient. The receptionists printed out restaurant recommendations, bus and train timetables and sightseeing venues for us and organised transfers to and from the airport. Of all the hotels we saw in Nice, none had the character, charm or location of La Perouse - if and when we return to Nice La Perouse has spoiled us for any other hotel, so we will have to start some some serious saving - as soon as we have sorted out our credit card!

We loved our three nights at Hotel La Perouse. The staff was friendly, helpful, and professional. Our room was tastefully decorated and, while it was on the small side, we had no complaints. The bathroom was modern and very nice. Our balcony overlooking the bay was beautiful. The views from this hotel are oustanding and well worth the splurge. We found a decent rate on 1-800-Hotels. The location was perfect. It is just a few minutes walk to the old town. The beach is just across the street and the port is just around the corner. Although it rained two days while we were there, we loved it anyway. The food was very good. One of our best meals in France was the terrace dining at the hotel one night. Absolutely delicious! The bellman/valet was extremely nice. Not only does he serve as bellman, but he has double duty with parking cars. One bit of advice: if you are in a hurry to get to the airport, make sure to call for your car and your bags early, as there is only one man with this job and it took quite some time for our car to arrive and our bags to be delivered. As some reviewers have noted, there is a problem with ants. We had a lot of ants on our balcony and some made their way into our room. Nevertheless, we weren't disturbed by the presence of ants. All in all, we loved this hotel and would definitely stay here again.

Reading some of the other reviews, I'd like to pick up & comment on a couple of the negative ones & give a different more positive slant.

The front door & reception are on the sea front road. The rest of the hotel is set back from the front & is reached by different lifts & corridors (the corridors are no different to normal hotel corridors & are very tastefully decorated & furnished). This access to the main hotel may sound negative, but we didn't find it any problem at all. In fact, it added to the atmosphere of this unique hotel. Yes it is a bit querky, but what's wrong with querky? If you want a standard box of a hotel, there are many hotel chains that will accommodate box type taste!

Our room was a bit on the small side, but beautifully decorated with a lovely terrace. There was nothing wrong with it & it was very comfortable & clean & certainly fulfilled our needs.

The whole hotel was well furnished & decorated, & was clean & comfortable everywhere. The extremely helpful staff always provided top class efficient service. The external terrace dining area was delightful & so was the pool area. Also, the rooftop terrace with fantastic views is well worth the trip up the elevator.

We were only here for two nights, but wished it was for longer. The first night we ate in the hotel restaurant with every intention of eating out for our second night. However, the food was so good on our first night that we decided to eat at the hotel again - gorgeous food!

The location of this hotel is one of it's main assets which is perfect for the old town a moments walk away. It is a little expensive, but this is mainly due to the weak pound against the Euro more than anything else really.

If you want a small, friendly, individual hotel in the heart of Nice, then I'm sure you won't be disappointed with La Perouse.

Just back from an anniversary celebrating 3 night break, sans children. We stayed on the 3rd floor with a small terrace room with" the" view. Despite the poor weather (it rained everyday), you could sit for hours and look out over the bay and city.

However if we'd had a room overlooking the terrace/pool or the back of the castle - you would be disappointed as it's not cheap and although clean, the rooms are small and not massively well appointed. Beds were comfortable but little things like no clock, no tea/coffee making and poor reception TV are not what I'd expect at a 4* hotel.

Staff are very friendly and helpful, breakfast is lovely - in the garden, and you are 2 minutes from the beach and Cours Saleya.

We stayed at La Perouse for 6 nights and would happily have stayed a lot longer! The little pool area was perfect for sunbathing and despite the close proximity to the old town and the port, it was very peaceful. The food was delicious, although a bit pricey, but no more than you'd expect from a nice hotel in that location. The service was excellent, as was the view over the Baie des Anges from the landing. The only slight gripe (and it was slight) was that the decor in the Standard/Classic room that we had was a bit tired. The bathroom was newly refurbished though, so I expect they will be doing the room as well at some stage. The room was a good size. It was sad that we didn't have a view over the bay, but that was our choice as we'd chosen the cheaper room. Next time we'd definitely consider splashing out on a sea view room as they looked fantastic. They also have valet parking which is nice as it removes the hassle of finding a parking space in Nice! Definitely a hotel we'd recommend for a relaxing break.

Would find it hard to argue with all the positive reviews on the site. This is a seriously good hotel. A few highlights:

* breakfasts very good indeed, in a lovely setting;
* superb views of the bay;
* the large roof terrace is very peaceful with even better views than the rest of the hotel, yet seems to get overlooked by most guests, who stay down by the pool.
* having to get 2 lifts to get to the upper floors is actually rather good fun and adds a sense of adventure;
* staff are very helpful.

Whilst the normal room rates may seem expensive, there are clearly bargains to be had via the right booking agents. We manged to get a decent sized double room (at the back but still with a sea view of sorts) for several nights in August for £160 a night including breakfast - a real bargain.

The only 2 remotely negative things I could think of are (i) if you lunch or dine in or hit the mini-bar the extras can mount up fast - they are expensive; (ii) all members of staff are obviously under instructions to say "bonjour" to you wherever they come across you in a corridor, whether it be maid, handyman, waiter or whatever. Although this is endearing to start, it can get a bit wearing after a while.

All in all though, a superb hotel.
