“Goldstar in Nice a great value, just don't park there”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 December 2009

Goldstar Resort and Suites in Nice is a fine hotel. I booked via 1800hotels.com. I got a terrific rate, of 177 US, prepaid but including breakfast. This compared very favorably with the 250 euros or so that was posted in the hotel and with rates for similar hotels in the area of Nice where we stayed—a couple of blocks off the Promenade des Anglais and in the downtown area.

I’m guessing that the hotel is Russian owned, because that’s what the folks at the front desk appeared to be speaking to each other. Russian was also the first language listed among the 4 translations used for signage in the hotel and there is a large Russian population in Nice overall. That assumed, the décor was predominately Asian with full-size terra cotta warriors at various places in the halls and public rooms.

What was really wonderful about the hotel—besides its reasonable price, good location, and overall cleanliness and classy décor—was its rooms. It’s apparently an all suite hotel, with rooms that feature separate living rooms with desk, chair, and sleeper sofa. The toilet and bidet were separate from the tub/shower vanity area and there was even a highly compact little kitchen facility with frig, cooktop, sink and dishwasher (in about a square yard of space, amazingly laid out). Everything was polished marble from the floors to the walls and very streamlined and modern. It was great—and again, at an incredibly reasonable rate.

Buffet breakfast was served in the hotel restaurant space which had small decks holding two tables each where you could take your breakfast while enjoying the lovely Nice climate. The breakfast was ample and included the usual selections we’d had other places plus scrambled eggs and bacon. The restaurant/breakfast room was large but broken up into a couple of areas, showed evidence of sound machines for dancing or just loud music and even had an area with raked sand. Quirky but kind of fun.

There was a pool and sunning area one floor up from the restaurant and probably a workout room. I never checked out any of this but my husband looked and assured me it was there. I know they had a computer and wifi for guest use since I used it each day.

The one really problematic thing about the place was its garage. Luckily I got out of the car and attended to the luggage and check in while my husband drove down the ramp to park the vehicle. Glad I did or my ears would still be ringing. Just getting down the ramp took him 3 tries for each turn since the ramp was so narrow—as were the actual places to put the vehicle. All that and they charged 25 euros a day. Once we got the beast down there (actually it wasn’t even a large car) we left it for the entire time we were in Nice which cramped our sightseeing style a bit since I had intended to drive to Tourettes and a few other places during our stay.

So, if you are in Nice and not driving a car, you should consider Gold Star Resort. Except for the parking situation, it’s a wonderful bargain and a really nice hotel.

I visited The Goldstar resort last week for 6 nights and we were so looking forward to it the spa and gym done it for us, but to our surprise the gym is one bike that was fit for noone the the weights machine had no pins and was a death trap, the spa was out of order and so was sauna, the pool is a plunge pool, so do not go for a work out.
The small kitchen if wanted cleaning will be charged at 50euros or 10euros per day! charming! the rest of the room was cleaned daily.
The area is fab a good location to stay for a place to put your head down but not a romantic one. Try the Negresco!!

Stayed a week and found a great deal on their website and negotiated with the desk clerk upon arrival for an even better rate for extending our stay. Rooms are all large suites with plenty of space and in new condition with kitchens, which is a plus. Secure parking (for a fee) and free internet wireless and cable. Roof top pool heated and partially enclosed. The hotel is a few blocks in from the sea in a good area. However, if one wants to trade the sea view at the an over priced 3 star for a large 5 star suite in comfort this is it. Perfect for families, the lounges have sofa beds and all partsof the suite can be closed off for privacy.

We received an upgrade to an Ambassdor suite; large appartment, very clean, nice design sometimes (chair f.i.) at the price of a real confort.
A 4 star accomodation followed by a 2 (or even one) star service: Hamman and sauna were closed, television in the room was out of order as well as the credit card machine at check out time. All this unmanaged by a friendly, young but totally unskilled and without any style staff. Strange ....

Very nice hotel with a quiet, yet central location close to the water and the pedestrian street/old Nice.
Great breakfast.
Rooms large and modern equipped, maybe a bit sterile (no carpets, furniture in red leather and steel).
Small but nice heated swimmingpool and a great roof terrace, unfortunately with no bar/pool service.
A good choice, but not a 4* experience.

My husband and I kicked off our honeymoon by staying here. Like others, we were upgraded to the Consul Suite which was very comfortable - an enormous bathroom and a very comfortable (but firm) bed. It rained the whole time we were there so I can't really comment on the rooftop pool or terrace, but they looked lovely! Brunch was great - a nice spread of breakfast meats, fruits, and pastries. Hotel staff was courteous and almost everyone spoke English. Although the hotel was full, we barely saw or heard another person during our entire 3-day stay. The location was fantastic - set a few blocks back from the Promenade des Anglais and in New Nice, but a great location for walking anywhere. We feel we were able to see a lot of Nice because of where we stayed. We also rented a car and it was easy to find via the A-8 Autoroute. Just a few blocks from the beach! We liked the location because it was set back from the hustle and bustle of the Promenade but we were close enough to be there in a few steps. I don't think we had a single complaint about this hotel, it was really a wonderful stay!

Our stay at the Goldstar was ruined by an incident on our first night ! At 3.30 in the morning we were confronted with a strange half naked man stumbling around in our room … he had somehow managed to get into our room even though the electronic key cards should prevent this. As you can imagine, this scared the living daylights out of us. We immediately reported it to the reception desk. The following day we went to the reception desk and they advised this had never happened before and we obviously hadn't shut the door properly … as this wasn't a satisfactory response we went back the following day, when this time we were told the electrical fault (??) had now been fixed and it wouldn't happen again, but the manager was not around to speak to until the following day. Unfortunately, this is where the hotel management let us down as they weren't even apologetic and didn't seem to care. As we weren't flying until later that evening, they did finally agree to an extension of 3 hours after the original check out time.

Had the above not happened then we would have enjoyed our stay there - it was a great location from the Promenade des Anglais, the old town and the shopping district. We had booked a junior suite but were upgraded to a Consul suite - on reading other reviews, this seems to happen a lot !

The suite was very spacious, with a huge wet room for the shower (but no bath). The bed was very comfortable and there was plenty of wardrobe space. The swimming pool was lovely and heated at 34 degrees. There was a good choice at breakfast of bacon/eggs, cereal, pastries, cold meats/cheese and fruit/yoghurts and you could have as much as you liked.

There are a couple of other points but not enough to ruin our stay:
- The kitchenette is described as superbly equipped but there were minimal utensils (4 forks, 1 knife and no spoons !) and only 2 very small coffee cups and 2 champagne glasses. There is also a charge if this is left dirty on departure.
- We were told that the new manager has decided that robes are not going to be supplied in every room. If one is required then there is an additional charge.
- We did not have an ironing board or iron and I imagine there would be a separate charge if needed !
- The steam room and sauna looked lovely but unfortunately, you had to contact reception if you wanted to use them so couldn't just pop in there if you fancied it.
