It is amazing that the internet now enables us to book tickets for ballet and concerts in Nice as easily as in our home towns. The Opera de Nice has an efficient booking engine, and collecting tickets from the box office is so much easier than any other theatre I have used in France.

The building itself is on the shabby side of historic and quaint. This makes no difference to the enjoyment of the spectacle; but sooner or later a refurbishment will be due.

Ticket prices are very reasonable and include programmes - so different from most UK theatres.

We didn't try the bar; just as well, as the toilet arrangements are inadequate. It is possible to find a facility with no queue, but it takes time.

we attended a performance of an opera by Cilla, A.Lecouvrier. The performance was most enjoyable and the setting superb.BUT the leg room in the balcony is appalling and talking to regular ( French) opers gouers the only reasonably comfortable seats are in the stalls

This is a wonderfully small opera house, where most of the seats give good views of the stage. The Lower, Dress and Upper Circle are all boxes within which some of the seats are quite tired and could really do with reupholstering. The interior decoration is stunning: loads of red velvet and a wonderfully painted ceiling. There are limited toilet facilities that get crowded during the intervals.

It was amazing to be able to purchase good seats on the day during the Nice Carnival for a modest outlay for opera tickets (especially compared to London prices.)

The Handel Production seen was most unusual and (except for the music) would not have been recognised by the composer. Maybe this was because it was staged during the Carnival. That said, the music was of a high standard both vocally and instrumentally and the evening was most entertaining.

Opéra de Nice, was built in 1885, after a gas explosion caused a massive fire and the theatre was completely destroy taking lives with it. Francois Aune, a Nice architect and student of Gustave Eiffel, was charged with the building of the new opera house, which was classified as a historic monument in March 1992.
The building also houses the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra and the Ballet Nice Méditerrannée. In fact, we could enjoy a ballet (Sylvia suite - Les deux pigeons) choreographied by Eric Vu-An with live music by the Nice Philharmonic Orchestra.

As said previously the seats in the gods are bwnch seats half depth covered with carpet. Terrible
However our view of Les Deux Pigeons was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a lon g way up but there is a lift.
Worth going to see ballet there
