“Not a 3 Star”
Reviewed 25 May 2008

We stayed here from 20-24 May 08 and were extremely disappointed The hotel generally and our room was shabby and tired The room was small, the furniture old and the safe broken. The air conditioning was inefficient and not maintained. There are no public area to meet other guests. Breakfast consisted of the cheapest food available - 1 cereal, processed cheese - tinned fruit served on chipped crockery.
No functional emergency lighting on the staircases - during a power cut
In no way does this hotel deserve a 3 star rating and should be downgraded. On the positive side the location is good and the staff helpful

I had to stay at Nice for business during the time when the MIPIM (real estate fair at Cannes) was on and all the hotels were fully-booked. Therefore had to do with the Albert 1er, at a very steep price for what it is. An extremely busy road just underneath the room whose thin windows did not shut out the noise. Other people have complained about the very thin walls and the connecting door - I can confirm this. Everything is very old, no money seems to have been spent for improvements, no personal touches anywhere. No lobby, no sitting room, average breakfast not included in price. Positives: Definitely the location within the town, very friendly staff, clean room, bed narrow but firm. Do make sure you never stay at Nice during the MIPIM (always the same week in March) - the airport can hardly cope with the number of flights and people.

Stayed here in 05, July. We felt that we got what we paid for. Location is fantastic, with everything you would need (buses, beach, Old City, stores, etc.) within walking distance.

As for the Hotel, remember, this is Continental Europe. Hotels are not up to American or UK standards. The walls are thin (you may hear your neigbors enjoying their romantic vacation). It probably could have used some updating when we were there. Other than that, no issues. We didn't need to interact with hotel staff, and did not take advantage of breakfast.

If you set your expectations appropriately, you probably will not be disapointed. Overall, we got our money's worth from this hotel.

This hotel was basic. It was no frills. Perhaps if we had a sea view it would have been a bit more exciting. For 60 Euro, it was a fantastic bargain because of the location. My wife and I would stay there again for the right price. If it wouldn't have been so inexpensive, I would have rated it a 3, but because of the price, I give it a 4.

We are three women of a certain age so - did we find this hotel quite basic - yes. Does the hotel need an overhaul - yes. Could we smell smoke occasionally from next door - yes. Could we smell drains in some of the communal areas - yes. Was this hotel in the most fantastic location - yes. Was breakfast worth having - yes. Would we go back - yes. Well as you can see, you get what you pay for and when staying in a lovely city like Nice, who wants to be in an expensive hotel room when there is so much to do outside. This was just fine for us where location is more important than material stuff.
I would say, however, that I think they could put a mirror in the bedrooms as our triple room only had the bathroom mirror and when three women are getting ready it was a bit difficult and time consuming all waiting for one mirror.

It is so easy to find, the airport bus stops almost outside and the main bus station just 5 mins walk away. Being so close to the promenade is such a plus too.
This hotel wouldn't do for those pinickity people but if you just want a good clean base then this is just the right spot.

I feel obliged to write a review after reading some of the awful ones that have been posted. Yes the hotel is slightly outdated, but isn't that what you expect going to the continent.... it's what we call French chic!!! The rooms are basic, but clean and tiny. The location is absolutely perfect, you literally walk out the door and onto the beach, with restaurants and shops a stone throws away!!! The pub down stairs serves good food and drink and plays great live music. Granted the music can be a bit loud if your on a ground level room in the hotel, so I'd recommed requesting a fifth or sixth floor room... plus it means you benefit from the gorgeous scenery!!! The shop next door is great for breakfast if you're not getting it in the hotel! Overall this hotel we thought was great, the only thing it's lacking is a swimming pool.... but with the gorgoeous beach across the road I think it's a fault I can live with!!

Don't be put off by the faded decor and knocked-about furniture and fittings: this hotel is a no-frills gem! It's perfectly positioned, just off the beach and the promenade, next to the main square, and very near the pedestrianised area where you'll find a huge choice of restaurants. The marina is a brisk walk around the headland. Several large, expensive (23.50 euros/day) underground car parks are nearby, but buses to/from the airport (which is inaudible, yet only 4 miles away) pass right by the hotel anyway. Some rooms look across the lush gardens with views of the sea between the palm trees. The rooms are well cleaned, equipped to 3-star standard and everything works, especially the all-important power-showers. The towels and bed linen are of good quality and the lack of drinks facilities in the rooms is made up for by the chilled vending machines in the lounge. Double glazing, shutters and heavy (though dingy) curtains keep the noise of traffic out at night (and also the sound of occasional open-air concerts in the park, if those aren't your thing), while air-conditioning keeps the temperature manageable. However, you'll want to keep the windows open to enjoy all the hustle & bustle of the city, even in the afternoon when the sun beats into the rooms from the west. Best of all are the staff, however, who are friendly, hard working and good at their jobs. The hot & cold buffet breakfast, served from 7am until a lazy 10.30am in the quaint little lounge on the first floor, is worth the 11 euros, but you'll have to do everything for yourself at busy times. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will not hesitate to stay at the Albert 1er again. Those who expect more, in this location and at these prices, are barking up the wrong tree. It must be the best value-for-money in Nice.
