“A quaint, clean and well-situated hotel”
Reviewed 15 July 2010

Our stay at the Hotel Villa La Tour was wonderful. We stayed for 4 nights and found our room to be very clean and comfortable. The only surprise with the room was that it had two twin beds placed together as one large bed, but for the price and the location we certainly didn't mind. Additionally, the staff at all times of the day was helpful and kind.

The hotel is in a great location. It's in the heart of historic center of town, and is literally located right next to the best Italian restaurant in town. It's also right off of the main st. that you can follow to get to the beach in less than 10 minutes walking. The hotel has a relationship with a private beach, so you get a discount. While it's right next to the public beach, you have the benefit of knowing your personal items are secure while you swim and the luxury of a bathroom and restaurant.

I would gladly stay at Villa La Tour again and have no complaints!

Overall, our stay in Nice was wonderful and very relaxing (have been here twice before). It has always been a great combination of city break and a beach holiday with great food, ice cream and local rosé wine. We have stayed in the 'middle road' hotels like Vendome and All Seasons Nice Vieux Port. This time we wanted to have insight of the Old Town, so due to perfect location we chose Villa La Tour. We read a bunch of reviews of this hotel and had certain expectations for our stay.

We booked a last superior room thru the travel agency with charming blue & white decorated room in our minds. Not sure what happened, but we got a 'standard' room for our 7-nights-stay. It was a country-style decorated room with small toilet and shower, no flat-tv. This is why we felt mixed feelings, as we thought we paid extra. We were happy with functioning AC and comfortable bed. The room had a small window with backstreet view and we had no issues with noise from outside. We enjoyed fresh breakfast every morning in the outside tables (8,50 EUR) and watched our fuzzy cat friends sleeping nearby. Friendly and helpful staff made our stay homely. The hotel had an agreement with private beach that we visited every day. It was a bit pricy, but we could benefit of warm shower, clean beds, nice drinks and food & friendly service there.

My husband booked two nights at Villa la Tour based on the price per night as well as glowing Tripadvisor reviews. The hotel is in a perfect location, across the street from the main bus station and directly in Nice's Vielle Ville. The service staff spoke English well and was very friendly and helpful. The staircase is very narrow and steep and there was no lift so it can be a hassle if you have heavy suitcases like we did.

The first night we were there we were in a very tiny economy room. It appeared that rooms were subject to availability. The bed was the size of 1.5 twin beds and the bathroom was very small. I suppose this can be expected in a hotel in the old part of a European city.

We stayed an additional night on the return leg of our trip and stayed in a larger, more comfortable room. This space really made a difference. There were two twin beds that could be pushed together and the bathroom was a good deal larger. It was only after staying in the larger room that I understood why this place received such rave reviews. The decor was very charming and French provincial. All in all, a great place. A minute walk to shops and restaurants and a 10 minute walk to Promenade des Anglais. Just try to get into one of the larger rooms.

Nice is great place to go for a few days, we'd been a couple of times previously. We chose this hotel mainly from reviews we'd read on Trip Advisor. We liked the idea of staying in the old town and this quirky sounding hotel appealed. We do travel on a fairly tight budget and though it was a little bit more expensive than we normally pay it proved to be well worth it.

Location - almost directly opposite the bus terminal (the bus from airport cost 4 euros each) in a small paved street. We arrived mid-afternoon on a Sunday and there was some sort of carnival on, lots of music and dancing in the square next to the hotel. Our room wasn't quite ready but the friendly receiptionist offered us a free glass of wine whilst we sat outside and enjoyed the sun and soaked up the atmosphere The room we were allocated was at the front of the hotel - but there was double glazing so it was quiet. Small room with minimal storage but prettily decorated in blue and white . Bathroom also small but adequate. Towels changed frequently. Mini bar/fridge.

The hotel has three floors with very narrow steep staircases - no lift! Luckily we were on first floor. Reception is a mixture of old/antique furniture and bric a brac, dominated by large table which I assume is used for breakfast in inclement weather.. Breakfast is usually served outside. It is simple affair - lovely fresh bread etc.and good coffee. The mostly english speaking staff are very friendly, helpful and informative.

The beach is about a ten minute walk through the narrow streets of the old town. There's always something new to see or a place to sit and observe what's going on.

As you can imagine there are lots of places to eat to suit all tastes and budgets. Generally we found eating and drinking in Nice rather more expensive than most of european cities we have visited but then this is the south of France! The L'escalinado (the restuarant on the stairs) around the corner from the hotel is very good. We paid about 85 euros for two courses with half a bottle wine. The "Dugeso" in Plazza du Jesus is very popular and has very friendly staff - the food here is also good and reasonably priced.

We enjoyed our break in Nice, we used the local buses every day visiting Vance, Monte Carlo and Menton. Bus fares in Sept 2009 were 1 euro however far you travel! The coastal route is lovely.

We hope to return to Nice and we will certainly consider staying at the Villa La Tour again.

We booked to stay 7 nights in Hotel Villa La Tour in June 2010. Our booking was made in January. We had stayed in this hotel twice before and we had always found the staff to be very helpful and welcoming. The location of the hotel was another advantage as it's very convenient to both the old town and the bus station. However, on this occasion we were very disappointed. On arrival at the hotel we were told there was "a problem" and that we would have to move rooms after the first night with the possibility of having to move again during our stay. Needless to say, we were not very happy with this arrangement (we had booked for 7 nights and naturally you expect to have the same room throughout your stay). However, we didn't want to create a fuss so we dutifully packed up all our belongings the next morning and moved to a second room which we were fairly happy with). Nothing more was said to us about moving rooms so naturally we assumed that we would be in that room for the duration of our stay. We were therefore horrified when, on our return to the hotel one afternoon, we asked for our key and were told "but you have moved"! My face must have dropped as the receptionist said "I can tell you are shocked". The maid had been instructed to go in and move all of our belongings while we were out - no notice was given! Of course we were very annoyed as we hadn't been notified! When we complained the hotel manager said "but you didn't tell us you were happy with your new room". I replied that it wasn't up to us to tell them - we should have been notified. If things weren't bad enough, we had to go back into our old room to retrieve our valuables from the safe while the new guests were in it! And the room we were moved to was actually bigger than the one we had been forcibly ejected from - so why didn't the hotel just put the new guests in there? The final straw came when I noticed a big pluck in one of my good jumpers - damaged in transit. I couldn't sleep I was so annoyed about the whole thing. We did get our breakfasts for free but that hardly made up for the annoyance. We can't understand why we were treated in this way (we booked well in advance). We will not be returning to this hotel and neither will any of our friends or family to whom we had recommended the hotel in the past!

Dear Madame, Dear Sir,
I feel very sorry concerning the changement of rooms during your stay. This is not at all in our habits. !!! I only can say that it was due to a succession of unlucky circumstances and unsuffissant internal communication from our side. First of all, unfortunately we couldn't "identify" you as a quest who has been here before, as the booking was made throught an internet bookin agency. Normally guests who has been with us before, representing an important priority for us. The first night was an up-grade to a superior room.
Concerning the last change of room, the receptionnist thought that you may have been informed by arrival from the other receptionnist .... When I have seen you at the reception at 5 p.m I was really surprised that the move was made without your approuve.. Concerning the damage, please contact us directly, in order to find a suitable solution. Hoping for your understanding. And sorry Again. B. Kimmig

If you prefer the antique sections of European cities, this is the place. In fact, I think it is the only hotel in the old section of Nice. Very charming. Very clean. Very well run. The manager and staff were most cordial and helpful. The rooms are simple, but more than adequate -- with a lot of little amenities by someone who cares. (I would recommend a superior room or above). As a business traveler, I appreciated the free WiFi. Overall, a positive experience.

We stayed at Villa La Tour for three nights over the Monaco Grand Prix weekend. It's in a great position, just inside the old town and across the road from the tram stop, which took us to the train station for Monaco.

The hotel was being renovated during our stay. It's very traditional, with narrow corridors and steep stairs. Rooms are small and basic, but fine for a short stay. We spent minimal time in our room. The shower was sporadic and it seemed very basic to have a satchet of shampoo and a small bar of soap only. Towels were removed and not replaced one night. Not luxurious.

Service was excellent and the team are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was plentiful and good. Overall, if we wanted a room in Nice old town for a couple of nights at the normal rate, this would be fine. Going GP weekend though, we paid a high price, which didn't feel like good value.
