“Great location, nice room”
Reviewed 20 August 2013

My partner and I stayed at Hotel Solara for one night in July 2013.

The location is fantastic - busy pedestrian area, lots of cafes, restaurants, shops nearby. The room was fresh, clean, spacious for our needs (one night only). There was a small balcony which was lovely to sit and enjoy patisserie treats on in the afternoon/morning sun.

Short walk to the old town and main shopping area of Nice, highly recommend this hotel.

Only negative is the tiny lift so beware if you have lots of luggage as it can only fit one person at a time.

Room Tip: Book a room with a balcony if available.

When we arrived late on the train, we schlepped through the streets and I was terrified - some very old broken down places with rickety "hotel" signs. But when we arrived at Solara, I was SO relieved- what a *wonderful* little place. 14 rooms on the top 2 floors of a secure apartment building. It was so quiet (only 7 rooms were occupied when we were there) and because you enter codes to enter the building and the hotel floor, very secure. The lift is little (it's Europe- C'est la vie!) and going to and from the room means using that or the 104 stairs which we commonly used- we found it a delightful way to add to the whole European experience. The staff are great- all speak great english (one young woman speaks 4 languages really well!) and are so helpful with maps and information.

This hotel has one of the best locations we could have wanted - Carrefore, a very affordable and ample grocery and fantastic restaurants and shops all within a few blocks. 20 min walk from train station, 5-6 mins to old town, 5 mins to the beach, 15 mins to Castle Hill and 20 mins to the Port if you stroll.

We were thrilled to pay the extra funds for a room with a balcony- what a delight. We ate our own breakfast each morning there and sipped wine or Heineken together each night. One of the BEST parts of the trip was this wonderful spot with such a tremendous view of the lively street morning and night- street performers abound. The balcony is on the roof so you can't be seen from below but you see down to all the action of Nice. Two nights out of our 7, the room next door had occupants so we had to share the balcony space (there is a frosted glass partition between you, but it is obvious when they are on their side of the terrace). But close the doors and shutters and it is utterly silent when you go to sleep. The room we had was #11 with a crisp beach theme- plain drapes and bedding, but very cozy. The wifi could be a little particular at times, but we were still able to skype our kids with success almost daily.

We would be utterly delighted to stay at this location again- be sure to check out the plaque by the door indicating the history of the building during WWII. Beautiful place- worth every penny, but very reasonably priced for the area.

Room Tip: We had room #11- a double bed room in a great spot in the corner with a terrace. It was so quiet and...

Positives: good location (close to the beach and the promenade), clean, the AC and the wi fi worked well, the staff was attentive and helpful, good size rooms.
Negatives: very cramped little bathroom, with the toilet lid falling off, the bathroom door was closing with difficulty at times (due to humidity, I guess), tiny shower.
Overall: good value. If you come here with low expectations, then you will be pleasantly surprised.

We stayed here for 4 nights. Very good value for money in the centre of Nice. We booked a room with a balcony and it was great to sit out in the evening. We had our breakfast in one of the cafes on the street, but breakfast would be lovely on the balcony. The hotel is so clean. Reception is very helpful. We will stay here again

Room Tip: Book a room with a balcony.

The hotel def not very cheap but considering how expensive Nice as a city is, this was def worth every penny. It superbly located(5 mins walking from the bus stop) and 5 mins walking from the beach as well. We didnt include bfast in our stay and explored all the cafes situated right below the hotel. U can find so many in one lane. Close to beach, old town, 15 mins walking from station. Rooms were amall, neat and well maintained. probably best washroom in our entire trip. We got room with balcony which made it even better.Lifts too small(never seen a smaller one). The staff was very helpful and friendly specially Eugenie and Conchita. Both the ladies were very polite and guided as well with the attractions which we wanted to cover. Beautiful city and we were lucky to have found this hotel at a reasonable price and good location. Will love to come back again

Room Tip: Room with balcony away from street

Nice is an expensive city so while this hotel isn't rock-bottom cheap, it's as good as you'll get for the location: smack in the middle of Nice city centre, a few steps from the bus stop to/from the airport and near enough to walk pretty much everywhere (and also a couple of blocks from the tram line if you're feeling lazy). Very clean, recently refurbished bedrooms and pleasant, helpful reception staff- if I'm ever in Nice again I will definitely stay here. (note: bring ear plugs; the walls are thin)

Room Tip: We booked a balcony room which, while lovely, was not really worth shelling out extra money for, unl...

The hotel only occupies the top two floors of an old style town house but it really delivers on all levels. Whilst the lift is a little but small for my liking, when you get there, you get a warm welcome from all of the staff and nothing seems too much trouble. As there is no breakfast room, we had the wonderful experience of eating our lovely breakfast on the balcony overlooking the houses to the rear of the hotel. All in all, we would definitely go back... Thanks everyone at the Solara

Room Tip: Pay a bit more and have a room with a balcony.
