“A good place to stay”
Reviewed 18 October 2013

This was a nice place to stay in Nice being within 5 minutes walk to the Promenade de Anglais, 10 minute walk to Vieux, Nice. It was very clean and bed was comfortable. The size was adequate. Although not always available, the staff was very helpful and friendly. Although the name includes "hotel", it is more like a floor in a beautiful old building. It was a good value for the dollar. Be aware that it is up several flights of stairs.

Positives:
1) Perfect location for visiting Nice.
2) Person was helpful over the phone when we left the key in the room and locked it.
3) Value for money: At the price point, gives a good value for money.
Negatives:
1) No lift and thus taking luggage up 2 floors is really cumbersome and gives a poor start to the trip.
2) Identifying the hotel was extremely difficult.
3) There is no staff present most of the time.

I stayed here for one night in October. The hotel is easy to get to from the airport - autobus 98 from terminal 2 is just 6 euros. Approx 15 minute bus journey. Get off at Les Jardins Albert 1er and Rue Paradis is only a five minute walk. My flight was very late in the evening so no one on reception but the owner emailed me brief but adequate instructions which worked well although it took me a little while to locate the hotel entrance on the street. In one direction the hotel is only 5 minutes back to Les Jardins Albert and some key bus stops, as well as the Promenade and reasonably priced cafes for breakfast. Here you'll also find a really helpful Office du Tourisme. It's 5-10 minutes to Cours Saleya morning market and the old town. The hotel is surrounded by high end designer clothes shops if that's your thing and evening night life is just a few steps away. What's not to like !!!

It is a little disconcerting when you open the door on Rue Paradis to find an unprepossessing fairly scruffy tiny hall way and you are immediately confronted by some steep stairs (5 short flights to be be precise) up to the Hotel floor - a bit off putting when you're tired after travelling. But once inside it was fine. My room (no.5) faced the street. It was not enormous but perfectly adequate and very clean, although the decor was a bit 'tired' (Interesting old wooden mural on the wall). It had a very small balcony overlooking the street. The tiny shower room was pristine as was the bed linen. I would have liked another pillow but there was no one to ask...and I struggled to understand how to lock and unlock the bedroom door but was helped by a charming and helpful young woman (the cleaner) next morning. She was cleaning Room 7 and I'd definitely recommend trying to book it - a large, light, airy room facing over the back of the building so probably quite quiet.

I agree with those reviewers who say it's not like a hotel - more like simply rooms to rent, but that worked fine for me. it felt a little like living in the neighbourhood which I liked. For the price I thought the hotel was really good and I'd certainly stay there again.

Most others reviewers have mentioned the plus points - excellent central location close to an airport express bus stop, friendly staff (when they are there), good sized and comfortable rooms and quiet for a city centre. We never ate breakfast there - lots of boulangeries etc nearby. Wi-fi worked fine for us. The main drawback is the long climb up to the hotel , especially with luggage, but the owner helped us on arrival and departure, which was great. Excellent price for anyone wanting a base and not a luixury hotel.

My wife and I stayed here for four nights as a home base for traveling in and around Nice. We like smaller hotels that are more on the high end scale and away from the "tourists zones". This hotel was an excellent choice partly because we knew ahead of time - thanks to tripadviser - that it was located on a high hill and the walls are thin. We had a top floor room with incredible views of Nice and the ocean - room 308. Some construction noise from the villa across the street - but no big deal. Also, we did not have the full breakfast for 16 euros each, but had coffee for two at just 5 euros each - which we would do again.

I stayed here in August 2013 with my partner in room 5. We booked for five nights and stayed for four- we couldn't bear to stay for another one!

The 'hotel' is not a hotel. As other reviewers have explained, it is a collection of rooms along a corridor in a large townhouse in the centre of Nice. The rest of the building is shared with offices and possibly one or two other flats.

The reception is staffed at entirely random times - mostly when people have pre-warned the staff of their arrival / departure. We were fortunate to read reviews in advance and so made arrangements with a guy called 'Thierry' who appears to be some kind of manager. We got hold of him via a series of texts and emails.

Our room had a balcony which was great. The room itself was a fine size with a tiny bathroom and shower. Towels were smelly and not very nice at all and there was quite a lot of hair in the shower when we arrived. A sign at the reception proudly informs guests that cleaning and linen changes are not included within the cost of the room.

The wifi does not work in that room (5) . The router is near the reception and the signal obviously does not reach it. It is really irritating not to have wifi when trying to plan a trip and it was promised within the room rate. But no reception staff mean no one to tell and no one to sort it out. There is an Orange Shop around the corner- we bought sim cards.

The room lock is a key-card type and that didn't work properly either. The door did not always lock so we had to check it every time. The card also controls power to the room via a slot inside the door- this didn't work all the time either, so occasionally the power randomly cut out.

As others have said, the rooms are accessible after climbing many steep marble stairs. This was fine for us, but obviously a lift would be appreciated. Just stating this on the website would be a good start. Finding the hotel is a bit tricky, but there is a sign stuck to the wall that lights up (currently covered in scaffolding though). Tripadvisor helped us out a lot in finding this place!

The staff who did occasionally turn up sat on their phones at reception looking disinterested. One was really helpful, one laughed at us and was rude. We explained we were going to leave early and the reply was 'oh'.

We decided before making the trip home we needed a night in a hotel that had locking doors, working air conditioning, clean facilities and electricity all the time. So we left- never to return.

The location is great and the price is by no means the highest in Nice, but I felt tricked into booking a room in a place that was not honest and upfront about what was on offer. If you want a hotel in the normal sense, do not visit here.

Room Tip: Balcony rooms overlooking the street are noisy at night but have plenty of fresh air during the day.

We stayed here for 3 nights. The location cannot be beaten. It is in a pedestrian mall above shops. We were shocked when we arrived and had to tranport 4 heavy suitcases up 5 flights of stairs, and were grateful that a fellow guest who was coming down stopped to help us. I should also say that two of the girls who were cleaning the rooms when we checked out helped us to bring our luggage down the stairs again and also called a taxi for us (who by the way ripped us off as did both taxis we hired in Nice but that's another story!)

As others have said, this is not really a hotel. It's not really even a bed and breakfast. It is a collection of rooms for hire in a building and not much more. However, the location is excellent, the room is nice, the bathroom is spacious and the wifi is free. We booked a superior (higher) room but I'm not sure we actually got it as we certainly didn't have a full sized fridge, toaster or microwave! Perhaps if we had we might have rated the hotel a 5 instead of a 4.

Again as others have said, if you expect service, stay somewhere else; but if you want cheap, clean and well located, and are able to walk up and down 5 flights of stairs several times a day, le Petit Trianon may be what you are looking for.

Room Tip: Ask for the room which has the full sized fridge and microwave
