We are often in Nice and always find time to have an evening meal at Chez Juliette. I last reviewed the restaurant a few years ago and I'm pleased to say that it's every bit as good as it was.
First of all, the setting is glorious, with views down Rue Rosetti to the cathedral and views up the street to the illuminated chateau. The tables are attractively dressed and the whole place just looks so inviting, especially compared with some of the other more routine and tired eating places in the area.
Second, the food. Not a huge menu (invariably a good sign) but a good selection of meat, fish and, unusually for France, vegetarian dishes. Everything is freshly cooked so don't expect fast food. But you are never hurried so relax, enjoy a glass of wine and wait for the food to arrive. You may even find new friends at the next table as the diners seem to come from all over the world. My particular favourite is the filet du porc - and there's a simple three course set menu which is amazingly good value. For wine, it had to be rose of course and the Corsican rose is lovely.
Thirdly, it's about the people. The eponymous Juliette is ever-present with her team of local boys and she manages the place efficiently and always has time for customers. This is her restaurant and her personality, her love of good design and her professionalism shows how important it is that people leave satisfied enough to come again - and to recommend it to their friends.
The Old Town has very many ok restaurants but very few that are a bit different and with an attractive, open setting. Only open evenings and we normally book in advance as it's very busy outside especially around 8pm (although there are inside tables if the skies open).
