Owner description: It took Baroness Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild, one of the most original women on the French Riviera, seven years to build one of the most beautiful sites on the Côte d’Azur. An enlightened art enthusiast who travelled back and forth across France and Europe, Béatrice de Rothschild built up an incomparable and eclectic collection of masterpieces: priceless Sèvres and Vincennes porcelain, works by Fragonard, paintings by the masters (Boucher, Carpaccio, Tiepolo, etc.), Louis XVI furniture, and so on.

“A small paradise”
Reviewed 12 February 2012

This is like a small world designed for the happyness of Adam and Eve. The villa is impressive, has an italian style with a mauresq touch. In the museum you will see mainly French china works, but we particularly loved our walk in the vast thematic garden and around the pool.

“Definately worth a visit!”
Reviewed 7 February 2012

The villa is definately gorgeous! Both the 9 gardens and the art collection inside the villa are worth to see. It's a pity that when we went in Jan, there was not many flowers to see in the garden and some maintenance work was going on. But even so, the gardens are each with its uniqueness and that impressed us. The voice guide we got inside the villa has comprehensive explanation, so it was really an interesting and informative place to visit!

“Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild - imposing house, spectacular sea views, delightful gardens”
Reviewed 31 January 2012

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, a Belle Epoque residence built to impress, is within easy reach of Nice by bus no 81 to Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, but you have to get off before the bus reaches the village, at the stop marked Ephrussi de Rothschild, then walk up the long driveway. The Villa is set on high ground on the isthmus leading to Cap Ferrat, and as a result you have wonderful views across the bay of Villefranche in one direction, and along the coast towards Cap d'Ail and Monaco in the other. The interior is well worth a visit, including the octagonal tea room with stunning views across to Cap de Nice and Villefranche, and here you can have a light lunch such as quiche or salad. It's not really a restaurant, more of a tea room, but it has a certain charm. The truly spectacular part is the tour of the gardens, each with its own particular theme. There are a number of steps and gravel paths so not all the gardens are easily accessible with a wheelchair or a pushchair. At the end of the visit you come to the water gardens in front of the Villa, with the spectacular "jeux d'eau" accompanied by a recording of Rossini's "Thieving Magpie". The museum shop is well stocked with high quality gifts and books, and there is free parking in the driveway leading up to the main entrance, but you need to look out for the sign at the top of the driveway showing you how to turn your car around, as it is a pretty tight manoeuvre. It's also easy to get here by bus from Nice, on foot from Villefranche or Beaulieu, or by bicycle. I would avoid visiting the gardens in the hottest part of the day in the summer, taking account of the fact that the quality of the light is better later in the afternoon.

“Wonderful villa on the French Riviera”
Reviewed 30 January 2012

For tourists spending some time on the French Riviera and willing to do smething else than just enjoying the Mediterranean Sea or sunbathing on the beach, visiting the villa built for Beatrix de Rotschild is highly recommended.

The house by itself, made of white and pink walls is just wonderful, and looks a bit like an Italian Renaissance Palace. Inside, you will have opportunity to visit most of the very beautifully and luxuously furnished rooms, together with an amazing collection of porcelaines.

Maybe even nicer than the villa itself, leaving without walking in the gorgeous gardens would be a crime! Built on a rock, they are organized by thema: roses, andalucian gardens, French garden with amazing musical fountains..., most of them having an extraordinary view on St Jean Cap Ferrat and on the Sea. Without any doubt, a great romantic experience, in a place where the sun almost always generously shines!

A must to do!

“Fabulous house and gardens with great views”
Reviewed 21 January 2012

We took the scenic bus ride from Nice to Villefranche to see the house and gardens. It was a short walk from the bus stop, and the hike gave us views of what it might be like to live on the Riviera. Once occupied the Rothchilds for only two weeks a year, the Venetian style Villa is a combination of antique doorways integrate with a more modern structure. There is a wonderful cafe, assorted gardens, and playful pools with musical water fountains. Joyful excursion!
